FREEBIES - I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE 1 ! Will Hay WILLHAYGUITAR.COM I Believe In A Thing Called Love ! I believe in a thing called love is the third single from the fantastic debut ‘Permission to land’ by English rockers The Darkness. It was released in 2003 and performed really well in the UK charts, helping to cement the bands legacy as one of the silliest and best modern british rock bands. The Darkness were at times a band a lot of people ‘didnt get’. The vocals can be a bit divisive but when you consider their commendable efforts to bring a new generation into the classic rock of yesteryear, and the fact that those one piece catsuits definitely aren't to be taken too seriously, hopefully you will get what they are about. I saw the band in december of 2013, and can honestly say having seen tons of incredible bands and events that it was the best live rock performance I’ve seen by some margin. If you get a chance to see them take it, they will dazzle you with the kind of silly spectacles you thought long since died out (hand stand on the drum riser whilst clapping along in time with your feet anyone?!). ! On to the solo now then. We want a good solid rock tone with plenty of distortion. Both Hawkins brothers favour Gibson Les Pauls into Marshall stacks nowadays but have also been known to use Mesa Boogie and Cornford amps also. Pretty much any humbucker equipped rock guitar and a tube amp with plenty of gain will do. I’ve split the video roughly into three sections: The main outro solo, the chorus riff, and finally the big widely rock ending. Lets get to it!

OUTRO SOLO ! The song has three solos that gradually build in length and intensity as well as the technical level required to play them. This final solo splits in half nicely so lets look at part 1: We kick things off with a 15th fret bend that moves quickly up and down before gradually climbing up a full tone. This is easier to show you than describe in text so check out the video for the details. What follows is a descending sixteenth note run moving down the minor pentatonic scale. Learn the 4 note groupings separately before joining them up and trying to increase the speed.

After a couple of bends we find a repeated theme. It begins in bar 3 but I have added a dotted red line to separate it off as its easier to think about mentally as begin part of the same repetition that continues in bar 4. Sometimes in written music groupings cross bar lines and its up to you as a musician to recognise this and change the way you think of the lines accordingly. ! The end of this first half of the solo comes with a final descending run down the blues scale. Its standard stuff but take care to fit the bends in without coming out of time and try and palm mute the notes underlined in red. ! On to the pyrotechnics…… ! ! !

OUTRO SOLO CONTINUED ! The second half of the solo utilises a really great idea which sounds far more complicated than it is. We will be taking an E major scale but playing it all along the E string instead. Here are the notes played as a scale over two octaves (the whole neck):

Justin uses some of these notes along with the open E string which is functioning as a ‘Pedal tone’. A pedal tone is a note which is repeated or sustained in a passage of notes like so: A B A B A C A D A B A F. As the other notes change the A remains constant. That is just one example of a pedal note, you don't have to always strictly alternate like that. Justin uses two patterns throughout, a two note pattern (A) and a three note pattern (B) like so:

! A ! B ! ! ! ! ! ! Pay particular attention to the picking of the three note pattern, this may take a while to feel natural for your hand at speed so start slow and get it right. Speed will come, quality is much more important. ! !

OUTRO SOLO CONTINUED

Lets look at how he combines these ideas: ! ! ! Pattern B Pattern A ! ! ! Above the tab I have labelled which of the two patterns we mentioned on page 4 he is using. Its still a lot of notes to remember though so make it easy on yourself and break it down into smaller chunks to bolt together. Underneath the tab I have suggested the most logical way of breaking it down. ! ! ! Pattern B ! !

More of the same in bar 8, this time pattern B throughout. I’ve split this into two chunks written beneath the tab to practice it in before pulling it all together. We nd with a nice healthy full tone bend at fret 22 (hopefully you at least have a 22 fret guitar). Thats the end of the final solo, on to the riff now…. ! THE RIFF This slightly fleshed out version of the riff (often tabbed out as single notes) is pretty straightforward. Make sure you follow the fingers Ive described in the video, start slow and gradually build the speed up. Played four times before the final rock ending. ! ! !

ROCK FINALE ! Ahh the classic rock finale, overplayed by covers bands everywhere! It is a fine art form if executed correctly and very much egg on your face if not. The finale to this song is quite easy, and like most overblown rock outro’s it is in free time (though I have notated it in a rough rhythm), lets take a look: ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Starting off with a big healthy open E major chord you want to let this ring for a little bit before moving up to the 15th fret on the B string for a full tone bend. Again, the next section in bar 13 is very difficult to describe in text but check out my video for a slow walkthrough. ! The pattern continues down to the 7th fret before we switch to the G string at fret 9 to restate the root note E again a few times. Play these as pinched harmonics if you can for added drama! One last strum of E major and we are outta here! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
