Matthew 5 v 4: Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Thank you for all your kind Harvest donations

A thank you letter has been received from Captain John Stark of the Salvation Army Lifehouse in Stoke. He writes:

Dear Congregations, On behalf of Vale Street Salvation Army Lifehouse I want to say a massive thank you for the generous amount of food you donated to the centre from the proceeds of your harvest festival. This will be used in our kitchen, for the people we support in the community and for anyone in hardship that presents themselves to us. I know that the residents here are really grateful for everything that is given and it helps them amazingly when they know that people do care. Also a big thank you for the monies donated (£104), this will go towards activities for our service users. Thank you once again and could I ask that you please remember our centre in your prayers. God bless, Captian John Stark

£60 was raised at the Harvest and Pet Service at All Saints for the RSPCA. Many thanks for your contributions. CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 5

Socrates famously said, ‘An unexamined life is not worth living.’ Sometimes it’s easier not to ask questions, but on the Alpha Course… we think life is worth exploring. The course is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that’s probably why over 18 million people around the world have already done it!) Never been to church? Not sure what you believe? Maybe you gave up on church a long time ago. The course was designed for you or anyone who doesn’t go to church regularly. Ever wanted to explore the meaning of life or ask challenging questions about the Christian faith? Maybe you’re just curious about this church stuff and want to have a nosy? Alpha doesn’t care about your background, it welcomes all those big questions and it’s free. Can’t say fairer than that right? Each session begins with food, snacks, that sort of thing, followed by a short talk looking at a different aspect of the Christian faith and time for discussion. An Alpha course will be beginning in this Parish in the New Year. Come to the introductory session on Tuesday 8th January, 7pm at the Red House, The Square, Caverswall. If you are interested in finding out more, contact the Parish Office: 01782 312570 / [email protected]

If God should go on strike…

How good it is that God above has never gone on strike. Because He was not treated fair, in things He didn’t like, If only once, he had sat down and said, “That’s it, I’m through, I’ve had enough of those on earth, so this is what I’ll do…

I’ll give my orders to the sun - cut off the heat supply, And to the moon - give no more light, and run the oceans dry.”

You know He would be justified, if fairness was the game, For no-one has been more abused or met with such distain Than God, and yet he carries on, supplying you and me With all the favours of His grace and everything for free!

We don’t care who we hurt or harm to gain the things we like, but what a mess we’d all be in if God should go on strike! Author Unknown PAGE 10 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND AIDED PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL LANE, CAVERSWALL, ST11 9EN HEADTEACHER: MR CHRISTPHER BURTON. TEL: 01782 393118

I cannot believe that we are already half a term through the school year. How many times do we hear the phrase ‘doesn’t time fly when you’re enjoying yourself’? Well, it’s true. I am enjoying myself and time is flying by. My main priority this half term has been to get to know as much as possible about the school and community. The staff and children have been enormously patient in the face of my barrage of ques- tions and suggestions for improvement. As we speak, the hall looks like something reminiscent of a jumble sale as we move things around to better use the space we have in the hall cupboards.

My first Harvest service was wonderful, the generosity of the children and parents was amazing and Y5 put on a wonderful performance of The Enormous Turnip.

I have not been allowed to forget that during my interview I promised to buy some play equipment for the children to climb on at break times (see photos).

I have spent lots of time researching prices, meeting with the school council and company representatives to ensure that I have as much information as possible for the governors when I ask them to release the finance (get ready governors) and fi- nally make the phone call to order the equipment. The school council have asked me to choose something for them (to save time) as I have done this type of thing before in other schools.

After half term we begin the run up to Christmas, which is always a busy time in schools. Please pray for us as we immerse ourselves in the festivities and traditions of Christmas whilst continuing to work hard to ensure the children receive the best possible learning experiences we are able to provide.

I attended a Neighbourhood Watch at the New Headquar- ters of the Police on Saturday 13th October. I have been to these conferences many times but this was the first time at the New HQ on Weston Road, Staffs, close to the University of Staffordshire.

I want to cut down on my Neighbourhood Watch activities after some 14 or 15 years. It is a very large area of some 280 houses. I never intended to take this on but when I started the N/W many people turned up, along with reporters, coun- cillors and, of course, the Police. However, as the crime rate has fallen and with the natural movement of residents, I feel that the various streets should organ- ise their own N/W with co-ordinators close to them. I may well call a meeting at St. Andrew’s and I am negotiating with the police to see if they want to come to speak to local residents. I did have some 20 or so helpers who were sort of co-ordinators, except that they helped where and when asked and no real initiative was taken. I am not really complaining, but I have done my part and it is for others to take over. This is not easily done, as you will understand. Doing is not what everyone does, moaning, complaining, passing the buck, etc., is the norm. People have telephoned me to ask me to telephone the Police on occasion. I say you telephone them, it is your area and your problem. They seldom do so, moaning about the Police, and me I suppose, is what the incident degenerates to.

So much activity is undertaken by so few, but then ‘volunteering is to be avoided’ is the general attitude of people. Mind you, one needs people of ability and confidence, which appears to be gifted to a few regulars and thank goodness for them. Once a volunteer ends the activity, he / she is soon forgotten and no-one is indispensable are they? Oh no! I ask?

The Church was such a communal place in times gone by, Scouts and Guides, Choir rehearsals weekly, Ladies’ Sowing Circle, Church of England Men’s Society and their Billiard Tables, so many activities at Churches with large Presbyteries or Church Institutes, where several activities would be going on at the same time. Town Women’s Guild would come, WVS and Whist Drives, Beetle Drives, and later BINGO, which used to be called Housey-Housey. The Methodists were famous for having a Concert Room and stage for the variety of shows that they would put on to bolster funds. My Scout Room was part of such a building so I was able to produce a full size Scout Show and, with a cast equal to the Hanley Screamline, it was, I think, even better because I went for laughter.

All these are now mostly pulled down and we are the poorer for it. Having a Scout Band, we had a first Sunday in the Month Church parade and no-one would miss it or they were in trouble with me. We also had our Charity Procession and the Band turned out for other Churches too. Tun- stall was a real community in my time there. No more I am afraid. It is the same everywhere else. Being a Vicar is hard work for sure, in almost every district, and it is sad that we are seeing so much reduction in Church attendance. Worse, we have the useless smart set who, with their par- ents help, have got on with their lives, with no experience of hardship, and so God is now dis- missed as irrelevant. Baptisms are not for their offspring, so the kids have no chance to learn for themselves and so the Churches are emptying. And, of course, the old C of E has not had a de- cent Archbishop to lead a fight back against the Political masters, and minority dictators, who demand no religious bias but a mixed up Religious Knowledge, with a confusion of foreign faiths which we are not allowed to criticise.

It is because the wrong people are more active than our own. We need to fight back and not lay down to the moronic minorities. People, to arms! To arms! Or the battle is lost. And I’m getting too old for the job. Dearly Beloved,

In Mark chapter 1 verse 35 it is written, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.”

Are you facing challenges today or feeling overwhelmed by your circumstances? Perhaps what you see on the outside doesn’t match up with what God has placed on the inside of you.

The key is: don’t sit around in self-pity, depressed or discouraged. Go out to a place where you can dream and connect with Almighty God. Head for the park and watch the sunset. Look up at the stars and think about His goodness. Take a break from the sur- roundings that seem to be holding you back.

Find a place that inspires you, a secluded spot where you can meditate on God’s Word and let your faith be elevated. Stay in a good, Bible-based church where people are going to build you up and not tear you down; a place where people are going to challenge you to rise higher and become all that God has created you to be.

Some people get home from work every night and watch the same depressing television shows week after week. Don’t let that be you! If you’re going to enlarge your vision, you’ve got to get out of a limited environment. Put yourself in an atmosphere where you can soak in the Word and move forward in the good things that God has prepared for you!

Would you like to pray, “Lord, today I choose to separate myself from my circumstances and from my environment so I can set my heart and mind on You. Show me Your ways. Reveal Your love to me. Give me Your vision of victory for my future in Jesus’ name. So be it. Amen.”

May God bless you. George & Joyce

N. B. As a result of your prayers, the meetings here locally went off well, plus I was able to teach at a B School on Family, Cells and the book of Ruth. Thank you so much.

Dear Children,

One day during the school holidays, my nephew Dominic ar- ranged to go for a bike ride with two of his mates, Callum and Tom. They decided to go to Dimmingsdale, which is in Alton, and not too far from where they live. They had been before and knew that there were straight paths each side of the river which were safe and ideal for walkers, horse riders and cyclists.

It was a crisp Autumn morning when they set out. Dim- mingsdale looked lovely in the sunlight. Leaves had fallen onto the pathway and crunched as their bike wheels pressed them down. They rode carefully to avoid any walkers but there were very few people about. When they espied a pic- nic table near a spot where the river widened, they stopped to rest and reached out drinks and chocolate bars from their rucksacks. They decided to explore the area. They carefully slid down the river bank and competed in throwing stones the furthest across the water, at the same time keeping an eye on their bikes. There were a few trees near the picnic table and Dominic suggested some tree climbing. Tom and Callum were not so keen. They did not want to break an arm or a leg! They watched as Dominic scrambled up on the lower branches , but the going be- gan to get tough as he climbed higher. Tom and Callum egged him on until he reached the top of the tree. He felt ex- hilarated as he viewed the surrounding countryside. "I'm coming down now" he shouted. He had to move slowly and carefully on his descent. His mates had gone quiet but he could hear screams drifting across from people enjoying the rides at nearby Alton Towers. When he reached the ground , he was dumbfounded to discover that Tom and Callum had sneaked off on their bikes. "Typical!" muttered Dominic.

He wondered which way to go to find them. Were they cycling further up the path towards or had they crossed over the river by the little path nearby? He could not hear their voices. He did not want to lose his way so he decided to return to their starting point which was near the cafe and car park. He reasoned that they would have to return sooner or later. But, yes, you've guessed it! Tom and Callum were leaning against the cafe wall, licking their ice creams and laughing at their prank. Dominic had to laugh too. Secretly he was relieved to see his mates. Thank goodness he had made a sensible decision and chosen the right path. CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 17 As we grow up, it is important that we take the right path in life and are not tempted and led astray by bad influences. Mixing with a crowd who don't want to study, who jeer at success and who prefer to lie and cheat and turn to crime, is not the way to a life that is happy, successful and fulfilled. Their way leads to unemployment, rejection, loneliness and even prison. So how do we find the right way? Our parents and dedicated teachers strive to put us on the right path.

We can also find guidance from listening to the words that Jesus spoke to his disciples...."I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE" (John's Gospel, Chapter 14). So pray to Jesus to show you the WAY to a better life. Believe in the TRUTH of his promise to send the Holy Spirit to guide and help you. Thank Him for giving His LIFE to bring love, peace and forgive- ness to you and to all of us.

God bless you. Uncle Jim

The Persecuted Church

Philippines - Philippine Government and Rebels Make a Deal - Source: BBC News The Philippine government reached a peace deal with the largest Muslim terror group last week, ending 40 years of conflict between the two groups. The government conceded another autonomous region in Mindanao to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). While most Filipinos are Catholics, in the Mindanao region, Muslims are the majority. The MILF has long agitated for an independent state, but the agreement to give Ban- gasamoro leaders more political and economic freedom appears to have pacified them. What is not clear, is how this will affect Christians in the Mindanao region. Christians have long been the victims of violence and land-grabs. Pray for the protection of Chris- tians in the region, that God will strengthen them in his power. Colossians 1:11

Iran - Another Christian Convert to Spend Six Years in Evin Prison - Sources: VOM Contacts A Christian convert from Islam was sentenced to six years in prison after he was charged with crimes against the regime and caught trying to flee the country. Alireza Seyyedian, 37, has been a Christian since 2006. Last year, authorities found a video of his baptism in Turkey on his laptop, which had been seized in a raid. In December 2011, he was charged with crimes against national security and propaganda against the re- gime. The judge cited his baptism in Turkey as evidence that Alireza was trying to ex- press dissatisfaction with the regime. He was also accused of hosting a house church and distributing Bibles to youth. In March, Alireza was caught fleeing to Turkey, and was brought back to Iran to Evin prison. He is being held in the section for political prison- ers. Pray for Alireza. Ask God to strengthen his faith and give him endurance. Romans 5:3

Indonesia - Bomb Attacks Revive Church Fears - Source: Release International, BBC News, The Jakarta Globe Bomb attacks on Christian targets in the city of Poso have revived painful memories of religious violence in Central Sulawesi. Explosives were detonated outside a Christian's home just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 9 -- then, about an hour later, a bomb went off outside Imanuel Church in nearby Taripa, Pamona Timur. Police said the house targeted in the first attack was that of Okrifil Mamuaya, a Christian working for the local government. No one was injured in the blasts -- but they have alarmed Christians in an area blighted by religious conflict in the past. Groups such as Laskar Jihad have carried out jihad, or holy war, against Christian communities, particularly in the Moluccas and Central Su- lawesi between 1999 and 2002. Pray that Christians in Poso and other parts of Central Sulawesi will know God's peace and love. Thank God that His perfect love drives out fear. 1 John 4:18

Vietnam - VOM Project Pray for tribal Christian training centers operating in Vietnam. The centers provide ma- terials and training for 400 rural and tribal Christian pastors with the goal of strength- ening house churches in rural areas, which face more persecution.
