And so they come, and so they go The Dame, or titled Knight, Some shone, it seems, an age ago Short as a mayfly’s flight.

Some were good, and some were poor It seems she’s met all sorts! The Queen smiles on, but to be sure – You’ll never guess her thoughts!

“My Government shall this enact”, The Queen’s Speech – sixty times! At Christmas, too, she’s never lacked Encouraging seasonal lines.

Through times of peace and times of strife She’s stood there at the helm, For she has lived her whole long life For the peoples of her realm.

Well, you can't but admire her. God save the Queen!

Welcome Aboard!

We warmly welcome Sylvia to the Church and Community

Hi, I’m Sylvia Fraser and I have recently started in my post as Young People and Community Co-ordinator, based at St. An- drew’s, Weston Coyney, working across the Benefice with Caverswall and Dilhorne.

I was born in Burton-on-Trent, and my family moved to Cheadle when I was ten. I have grown up in a Christian family, my father Catholic and my mother Anglican; she used to be a church secretary before we moved back to the area. I, along with my older brother, attended Painsley RC High School, where my mum became the first lady PTA Chair. After my A-levels at Moorlands 6th Form, I went to the University of Cumbria in Lan- caster (formerly St. Martin’s College) to train as a RE teacher.

During my time in Lancaster my faith became much more active, regularly attending St. Thomas’ church and volunteering a large part of my time, leading youth and children’s groups in addition to helping with further outreach events, such as sharing a meal with the homeless and volunteering with Christian community outreach groups and working alongside Street Pastors to provide tea and coffee on a Saturday night (this project was started by Alice Parry and other members of the 20’s-30’s group at St. T’s).

I got engaged in February 2011 to Daniel, who also studied at Cumbria. We both gradu- ated in July, whereupon I started part-time work in Lancaster and he returned to his par- ents in Devon to work also. We are hoping to both work and settle in the area and look forward to getting married soon after.

Beginning here at St. Andrew’s and within the community has been really enjoyable and I look forward to working alongside staff, volunteers and the church community to inspire and encourage both the young people and the community.

Recently at 4 Points Club, I was able to lead on the point of the Cross. I started with the point that it only takes one step to choose to follow Jesus, before we watched a YouTube clip of a skit of Lifehouse’s Everything. I encourage anyone who can to watch this. It manages to wordlessly explain the difference that letting Jesus into our lives can make.

Let me leave you with this verse from Romans: God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (5:8)

Thank you for welcoming me to the community. I look forward very much to meeting you all and hope our time together will be a huge blessing for everyone, both in the church and the community.

With prayers and best wishes, Sylvia Fraser

If you wish to find out more or chat about ideas you have for the young people and com- munity (Youth work / Messy Church etc), then either pop into Sylvia’s office at St. An- drew’s on Wednesdays from 10am or email Sylvia at: [email protected]

Please continue your prayers for the young people and the community. CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 7 PAGE 8 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST

Dear Friends,

Habakkuk 3:17-18 says, “Though the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, [though] the product of the olive fails and the fields yield no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will ex- ult in the [victorious] God of my salvation!” AMP

All of us face challenges and obstacles in this life. We have dreams in our hearts and, at times, it looks like they’re not going to come to pass. During these difficult seasons, we have a choice. We can either get negative and discouraged and talk about how things are not going to work out, or we can switch over into praise and thanksgiving which opens the door for God to move on our behalf.

A lot of times people think, “I’ll have a good attitude as soon as I get over this health issue.” “I’ll give God praise when I get through these tough times.” But that’s not how faith works. As long as we’re negative, discouraged and focused on our problems, it limits what God can do. You’ve got to give God praise first - in advance, and then the breakthrough will come. You’ve got to change your focus first, and then things will change in your favour. Praise always precedes the victory.

Today, if you’ve been dwelling on the wrong things and focusing in the wrong direction, switch over into praise and thanksgiving. Begin to proclaim it that God is good. Declare that He is faithful. Shout out His praises and open the door to victory in every area of your life!

Why not pray, “Heavenly Father, today I humbly come before You, lifting You up and magnifying Your holy name. Thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life. I bless You and honour You for Your goodness in Jesus’ name. Amen!”

Be blessed. George & Joyce

P.S. Please pray for me as I prepare to speak at a Youth Camp in Dehradun and then at a conference in Goa. Thank you so much.

If you would like to submit an article for the next Magazine, please submit as soon as possible before Thursday 21st June. PAGE 10 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST

Dear Children,

My nieces Imogen and Tilly have a new pet. It is a beau- tiful green budgie with a bright yellow head and throat. If you remember, their Dad had decided that they would not have any more pets after their rabbits died suddenly, but he relented after one of his work col- leagues offered him a budgie. You can imagine the ex- citement when Dad arrived home with the budgie in a big wide cage. He also had a bag full of interesting items for the budgie. There were two wooden perches, a tiny swing, a feeder and water dispenser as well as a mirror, a ball for him to play with and a seed bell for the bird to peck at.

As the two girls gazed at their new pet, Dad said "Don't frighten him, talk quietly to him and let him settle in with us. He is "finger trained", which means that soon he will perch on your finger and you will be able to stroke his feathers." Seven year old Imogen had lots of questions to ask. The first one was "What shall we call him?" After a few suggestions they decided to call the budgie "Bobby". Next Imogen wanted to know if Bobby would be happy living in a cage. She remembered how her rabbits could run freely around the garden. Dad explained that Bobby could be let out of his cage every day providing all windows and doors were closed.

After a few weeks Bobby was part of the family! Imogen and Tilly looked for- ward to the "fun" part, when Bobby would fly about the spacious living room and perch on one of their shoulders. They talked to him when he was on his perch and one day they could not believe their ears when he said "Pretty Bobby". At night they put a cloth over the cage, so that they could all get some sleep!

Every afternoon when Imogen returned from school, she would go and talk to Bobby. He would fly to the edge of the cage so that she could touch him. One day however, when she ran to the cage, Bobby was missing. "Mum!" she shouted, "Where is Bobby?" "Where is Bobby?" echoed three year old Tilly. Mum rushed into the room and could not believe that the cage was empty, but she could see that the cage door was open and the bird had flown! CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 11 Someone had not fastened the door properly. Imogen and Tilly began to cry. Mum began looking in all the rooms. She had been at work that morning and knew that all the win- dows were closed. There was no sign of Bobby downstairs so the girls followed Mum upstairs and first looked in their bed- room. There was a chirp and a fluttering of feathers as they spied Bobby sitting on their window sill. He flew to Imogen and perched on her shoulder. "Thank goodness we have found you", she said. "Pretty Bobby" said the budgie and they all laughed.

We all have that feeling of happiness when someone or something lost is found again. In the Bible, Jesus tells us what joy it brings to God our heavenly Father when a person who is lost and gone astray, is found again by Him. He is always there ready to forgive and to rejoice. You can read about the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin and the Lost (Prodigal) Son, all in Luke's Gospel, Chapter 15. All are very special stories about God's love.

God bless you all, Uncle Jim

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND AIDED PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL LANE, CAVERSWALL, ST11 9EN ACTING HEADTEACHER: MRS SUE MOORE, TEL: 01782 393118

The SATs are finally over and Year 6 are looking forward to their final few weeks at St. Peter’s. The end of SATs week was celebrated with party food and a ‘Year 6 has got Talent’ compe- tition. It was certainly very entertaining! Year 6 are currently busy learning their lines and rehearsing for the summer per- formance of ‘Treasure Island.’

The whole school has enjoyed getting ready for a very special visi- tor – Bishop Geoff Annas, Bishop of Stafford. He came to lead our morning worship and dedicate the new staff room, which is finally finished. The children were very excited about seeing Bishop Geoff again - he spoke to the children about ‘Blessings’ and then cut the ribbon to officially open the new Staff room.

Members of our Art Club, aided by Miss Vickers and Mrs Moss, have been working hard to create a Jubilee-themed work of Art to be submitted to the village Jubilee Committee. I can’t divulge too much information - it is a competition entry - but it is fantastic and will be on display in St. Peter’s Church very soon.

On the theme of Jubilee, we are hoping the sun will shine on the day of our school cele- bration. The theme is red, white and blue and we are eager to see what outfits the children come up with. We have planned a street party celebration and lots of fun ac- tivities.

After such a busy half-term both staff and children are ready for their half term Bishop Geoff is pictured with Mr Adrian break, after which we will look forward to Dipple, our previous Headteacher, Rev visits from the new children who will be Steve Osbourne and Mrs Suzanne Moore joining us in September.

The Jubilee art work from St. Peter’s CE Primary School, and pieces of art from other local schools, will be on display at the Jubilee Celebration Service at St. Peter’s Church, Caverswall, on Sunday 3rd June at 10.30am. PAGE 14 CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST

Gift of a Memorial Bench at St. Peter’s Church, Caverswall

Our many thanks to Peter Eddowes who has arranged for the instalment of a bench at St. Peter’s Church in memory of his ancestral family, including Rev. William Eddowes, who was a former Vicar at Caverswall. The bench has been recently been installed by the porch door, next to an existing bench which is also being restored.

The brass plate inscription reads as follows: In memory of the Rev. William Eddowes, Vicar of Caverswall 1805-1824. Dedicated also to members of the Eddowes family residing in Peter Eddowes with the Dilhorne, Caverswall and 1698-1947. Eddowes memorial bench Presented by Peter Eddowes April 2012.

There is also a memorial stone to the Eddowes family visible in the Church kitchen, in memory of the Rev. William Eddowes of St. John’s College, Cambridge (d. 30 June 1824, aged 65), his wife, Elizabeth Eddowes (d. 30 November 1811, aged 57) and their two daughters, Mary (d. 20 January 1814, aged 24) and Elizabeth (d. 21 April 1814, aged 25).

Many thanks also to David Beardmore, Alan Hawkins and David Walklett for their help in installing the bench and clearing the grounds.

Thank you for all your kind donations to Lukehanyo Orphanage, Mufilini Village, just outside Cape Town in South Africa. Over £600 was raised and the orphanage have been able to buy a washing machine with the money sent. Audrey, a trained phar- macist and trainee doctor at the local hospital who provides the children with medi- cines when she visits, has written to say: “We got them an AWESOME Speed Queen ‘heavy duty’ washing machine. So, I am quite sure it will last for ages! It couldn't have come at a better time. Everyone was very sad about little Tshwarelo passing away [a young boy who was blind and with cerebral palsy who had been in their care]. But, the washing machine had them very excited! The kids were so excited - they all ran off to the room to get their dirty clothes and couldn't wait to see the washing ma- chine in action. Ester, Christine and Phumeza (now known as the 'Washing Manage- ment Team’) were over the moon! They also have enough washing powder to last them a while! Thank you SO much again for all the donations. It certainly would not have been possible without your help!”. Please keep Audrey, Ester, who runs the home, and all the children and staff in your prayers. Barbara Colclough CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 15

New Celebrations at Dilhorne Endowed Primary

On Thursday 24th May, the children and parishioners came together for the first time to celebrate Holy Communion in the school hall. Rev. Linda lead the congregation in wor- ship, with Koharu, Lucy, Courtney and Grant reading from the book of John and Jas- mine, James W, David and Iona reading their very own Prayers of Intercession. Pupils, parishioners and parents came together for this spiritually uplifting occasion and for the fascinated children to experience the Holy Communion service ‘up-close and personal’.

The school and church plan to celebrate Holy Communion on the 4th Thursday of every month during term-time, alternating venues from school to church. The intention is to provide the children with a greater understanding of our Christian faith and encourage them to embark on their own spiritual journey.

George (aged 9): “I liked the hymns we sang. I also liked when Rev. Linda gave us the chance to taste the bread after the service. It tasted just like normal bread!”

Helaina (aged 8): “I enjoyed the quiet time, but I also enjoying singing the hymns. It was strange when Rev Linda touched us on the head to bless us, strange nice”.

Mr. Jared Eccles (Executive Headteacher) said, “The occasion was very special for all who attended. It is wonderful for the children to be involved in leading this special act of worship. Everyone is welcome to join us at All Saints Church, Dilhorne, at 2.30pm on Thursday 28th June for the next service”.

When I was in the Boy Scout movement I used to attend meetings with the ‘Top Brass’ where we would have discussions on the movement and try to look at what we were about; what the future holds, and how it would continue to develop. Changes in the uniform for instance. We also used to re- examine what we were trying to achieve and how we were doing it. In discussing the Investiture of a boy, we went through the Scout Laws and Promise that each Lad was expected to agree to. The Third Scout Law was ‘A Scout Obeys orders of his’…etc... without question: I never liked this one. I used to tell my lads that Parents and Teachers, Scoutmasters and Policemen may be ok but I pointed out that obeying orders without question would be dependant on who is giving the orders, and sometimes what those orders were. Of course, the Nur- emburg Trials of Nazi War Criminals was on my mind, where German Military and Camp guards had committed unspeakable atrocities using ‘they were obey- ing orders’ as an excuse.

We, who are older, remember the Horror of the scenes of absolute evil at the end of the war. Photos of piles of corpses appearing in the Newspapers and Cinema screens (there was no television). I suppose that the History Channel in reproducing these awful times in our living history has lost the impact on the younger generation, who, if they see them at all, would pass off these events as past history and of no importance now. In being called up to do my National Service I never forgot these events that happened when I was younger. So I have grown to be wary and even sceptical about authority. I may even be rude to those in authority who don’t live up to my expectations, and of those with Political positions; I write and tell them so. I was even asked to attend a meeting of the Police and it was an assembly of officers and a magistrate who demanded that I leave the Neighbourhood Watch because I had written to the Home Secretary. I told them what they could do and that I don’t apologise, if I do not get satisfaction then I will always go to the top. I think that I was right and naturally I still think that I am.

In the army, I developed a poor impression of most of the British Army Offi- cers, although I was recommended for WOSBY (war office selection board Offi- cer training). I considered ‘signing on’ but no; I am my own man and passed that one. Later, working in a rather complicated industry, going all over the world on a variety of assignments, I always preferred to go alone. I am not a team man, which is probably why I find all ‘sport’ a bore. I can’t stand any sport or team game. Of course I can work with people if I have to, and agree that we should all pull together. This means that sometimes I do things or at- tend things that I would not choose to, except that I think I should, from a sense of duty. I don’t care for much of the Happy Clappy Hymns that are be- coming prevalent and I hate screaming Gospel Singers, but I suppose that they mean well, if it brings in the people, and increases the dwindling congregation, then I am willing to put up with it; as opposed to actually ‘joining in’. CAVERSWALL, DILHORNE & WESTON COYNEY POST PAGE 17 “Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s”, St. Matthew records Jesus as saying, so our Vicar is in charge with his own ideas and I hope that it works, so we must help the leader to develop his ideas in this ever changing world, for the greater good and so as not to be divisive. Vicars, Teachers and Doctors have to deal with the most difficult commodity in the world, people. I suppose Members of Parliament also have the problem, people think that they could do a better job than the MPs. I’m sure that I could….?

Humble pie is a difficult meal and certainly does not hold easy with me. United we stand, divided we fall. Hold hard and don’t rock the boat too much. Read the Book, life’s a rocky ride. Enjoy the Queen’s Jubilee and you can splice the main brace on this occasion. I will. Fred Hall

The Persecuted Church

Iran - Government Tracks Christians - Source: Mohabat News The Ministry of Intelligence has ordered the leaders of a Christian church in Tehran to submit the names and national identification numbers of its mem- bers to authorities. Viewed as an attempt to deter Christians from attending church, the order will reveal the identity of Christian converts and enable se- curity authorities to record detailed information about Christians. Although this most recent restriction will make church attendance riskier, previous re- strictions have failed to decrease the rate of Christian conversions. Last Feb- ruary, the Ministry of Intelligence banned Farsi services at the only two churches holding Farsi services on Friday, when most people are off work. Pray that this most recent restriction will fail to hinder the spread of the gos- pel in Iran. Acts 12:24

Laos - Mother Expels Children from Home - Source: VOM Contacts An 18-year-old boy and 20-year-old girl have been expelled from their home because of their Christian faith. When their mother became extremely ill, vil- lage elders claimed that the spirits were displeased because the two Christian children were living in the house. An older son tried to persuade his brother and sister to recant their faith, but they refused. Their mother then accused them of hating their older brother and wishing him dead. She threw their be- longings out of the house and told them to leave. The two Christians immedi- ately moved to a Christian village where they originally heard the gospel, and they were welcomed with open arms. Pray for these two brave Christians as they begin a new life away from their family. Luke 21:16

Indonesia - Churches Forced to Close - Source: Compass Direct News Seventeen churches were forced to close in early May after the election of a hard-line Islamic governor in Indonesia’s Aceh Province. The churches were closed under a controversial agreement that Christians signed in 2001, stat- ing that only one church and four chapels would be allowed. Because building permits have been routinely denied or delayed, many Christians worship in houses and other buildings. There are reportedly 12,000 Christians living in this area. Pray for continued growth despite the number of churches being closed. Psalm 9:10

North Africa - VOM Project Pray for the printing and distribution of 2,000 copies of the Bible in one of the main languages of people in a severely restricted area.
