Name: Linda Yohn Position: Music Director (morning on-air host, chief announcer, music director) Call Letters: WEMU-FM Wattage: 16,000 Number of weekly jazz programming hours: 106

TH: Congrats on the Jazz Journalists Association Wil- lis Conover-Marian McPartland Excellence in Broad- casting Award nomination. How does it feel? LY: I’m deeply honored. It’s wild to be working in this small mid-western town, and yet receive such an honor by peers all over the country. It’s an honor to be mentioned along with all the other nominees, all great soldiers for jazz, and all with solid radio chops. And, it is an honor to do this Q & A with you for JazzWeek! Ann Arbor – Not exactly the center of the jazz universe. How do you make a go of it in this community? Well, Ann Arbor may not be the center of the jazz uni- verse, but it is a cultural center in Michigan. Theatre, vi- sual arts, great restaurants, an emphasis on healthy life- styles, education and excellent entertainment including jazz makes it a great place to live. The jazz studies pro- gram at the University of Michigan is outstanding. Jazz is a part of the music curriculum in the Ann Arbor Public Schools and surrounding school systems. We support the teaching institutions and students who in turn support us. Ann Arbor is also the corporate headquarters of Bor- ders’ Books and Music. There are very hip consumers in Ann Arbor, so you have to be hip to keep up with them. And–we’re only 30 miles from Detroit. Even though our signal has some difficulty penetrating in Detroit, we are still a vital part of the Detroit jazz community. continued ... jazzweek.com • March 30, 2005 JazzWeek 12 Radio Q&A: WEMU’s Linda Yohn (continued)

How did you get into the wildly popular world of jazz radio? I’m an old transistor sister. My grandfather repaired tube-style radios and was an audiophile. I grew up singing along to the radio with my mother. In the 1960s, I wanted to be a “deejay” in the worst way. It didn’t occur to me that it was weird for a girl to want to do that. When I tired of rock and pop in the 1970s, I gravitated back to my mom’s music–jazz. I started tending bar at “I still pinch the local jazz club and when the PD of WBBY (a jazz station in Westerville, Ohio) suggested that I’d be good on the air, I jumped at the chance. I still myself to make pinch myself to make sure that this is for real–I get to get paid to play jazz re- cords. Wow!! sure that this Could you share with us your philosophy of jazz/music programming? is for real–I Programming jazz requires big ears and a big heart. Balance between new grooves and golden nuggets in a show is es- paid to play sential. Programming isn’t about charts. It is about music that resonates with listeners. Some new releases may strike a chord with listeners, but you can’t jazz records. play new music just because it is new. It has to be just as good as the greats. Wow!!” The big heart means that it isn’t about you–it is all about the listener. You have to make the music real for people, but do it economically and with respect for the music and the listener. That was a hard lesson for me to learn. I love this music as much as I love life, but I can’t be a zealot and make it about my “hip- ness”. How much input do DJs have? WEMU hosts have a great deal of input. After I review the CDs for dayparts and stand-out tracks, the discs go in to the studio for the host’s choices. Vet- eran WEMU hosts such as Michael Jewett, Michael G. Nastos, George Klein and Jessica Webster need no coaching in terms of music choices. I work more closely with students and some of WEMU’s newer hosts. What specific things do you do (if any) to accommodate your listenership? While we do not solicit requests, we play them within reason. We answer our own phones except during fund drives. We’re always willing to share more information about the music with an inquisitive listener. We answer listen- er email ASAP. Our playlists are on our website. WEMU’s and club listings on our website are the most reliable source of jazz performance information in the state of Michigan. When an artist is coming to Detroit or Ann Arbor, we try to get them into the studio for an interview. They help bring the music to life for the listener. We provide good old basic services for listeners as well–time and temperature checks, brief weather forecasts and traf- fic updates in certain dayparts. Do you do a lot of community outreach? major community involvement. WEMU hosts give talks at local libraries and community centers, volunteer for literacy, environmental, social service organi- zations and more and serve on community boards. We just finished a special artist tribute series with saxophonist Vincent York and his educational program “Jazzistry” where WEMU hosts did the biographical research on a jazz leg- end and Vincent and the band played the music live to illustrate. It was en- gaging and incredibly informative. I think community outreach and volun- teerism, although exhausting, makes you a better host because you know who you are talking to and what is important to them. I’m also very proud of our African- American History Month specials. We tagged on to the “Jazzistry” name. I wrote scripts about the jazz greats and had local Black Community lead- ers such as educators, actors, musi- cians, city council persons, state leg- islators and athletes read the scripts. They brought their credentials to bear and reinforced the message. We also plan to spend time reviewing and improving what we do. We’re good at what we do, but we can be better.
