Drew Goren/Dare2/Sunnyside Records lot is always going on in the world of Dave Holland. As a leader he tours regularly with his very fine quintet and is Aeven getting ready for a month of work with his big band in April. Holland has also started a label after more than 30 fruitful years with ECM. JazzWeek caught up with the bassist at his home in Upstate New York to see what he had to say for himself, get his take on changing economics in jazz, and to even discuss how jazz radio has embraced his music. JazzWeek: I was reading the liner notes to Overtime, and it said you played Monterey the week after 9/11. Did I read that correctly? You were able to make the gig? Holland: It was touch and go for while whether we would actually be able to do it. tional time for everybody. I think the fact that event went on and so many peo- ple came and we got on the plane to go out there to do the gig I think added to the intense feeling of this positive energy that we presented to everybody. It must have been a very intense experience. I think everybody felt it was about life going on. We played to 8,000 people in the arena there. It was very powerful. It was also nice that we were able to do something that was a part of normal activity: celebrating music, celebrating be- ing together, all those things. Sitting close to a big band, I can get swallowed up by the sound. I imagine it’s even more so when you’re playing in the band. It’s a great sound, particularly with these individuals. Every band has its own sound, or at least you hope it will, and every time we get together I really enjoy “I’ve always the sound we make together. And we’ve been able to keep the personnel more or less the same since we formed it in 2000. So we’ve been able to fine tune the admired big band sound and the section playing as well as become more familiar with the music music and enjoyed and each other. Has it always been a dream of yours to do a big band? it since I bought I can’t say it’s always been a dream. I’ve always admired big band music and my first Duke enjoyed it since I bought my first record a long time ago. And I played in big bands in England. I did a little work with the Thad Jones/Mel Ellington record a Lewis here in America, subbing for Richard Davis. I had so many heroes in long time ago.” that field that I respected that I wasn’t sure I could contribute anything [new]. It took a nudge from my family and the prospects of work from the Montreal Jazz Festival. What was the biggest challenge? I think for me it was going from being a songwriter who wrote music for small groups and making the leap to large scale orchestration and large scale plan- ning. I still wanted to keep it as a setting for improvisation. The big band still sounds like an expanded version of the quintet—it’s obvi- ously still your music. To me the creative process is about that. It’s really one foot in front of the oth- er and building on the things that you’re discovering and learning and what you’ve done already. And then moving it along. I suppose that is what hap- pened with the big band. It’s really an expansion of the core ideas developed in the small groups. It really goes against common assumptions to put a big band on the road these days. Well it’s only become a reality the last couple of years. We struggled for a long time just getting sufficient work for a small group and make it an ongoing

project. Now we’re enjoying the luxury of being able to go out in a big band. It’s one of the benefits we’ve had from the awards and the public reception and in the press. However, we’re very careful to time things so that the conditions are right for the big band. It has to be the right venue and there has to be the economics to support it. Let’s talk about the label. Why make the switch from ECM to Dare2? More independence. Dare2 records represents the chance to actually own the music, the product. Under standard arrangements with the record company, the company owns the recordings that you do. For a long time, I’ve wanted the ownership to remain with the musicians. I’ve had a couple of records that I’ve been able to record out- side of ECM, but ECM wasn’t really comfortable with that idea. Understandably so because [the label’s] worth is based on the ownership of the music. One’s All was a re- cord I did in the early ‘90s is a record that I own, and a trio record with Minu Cinelu and called Trio. Both are on Intuition Records out of Cologne. There’s also the whole changing climate of the record in- dustry now and the effect that the internet has had on distribution of the music. We’re traveling with 24-track recording equipment a lot of the time, so we’re docu- menting a lot of shows and archiving the material. One of the things I’m looking forward to in the future is being able to distribute, or make available to the public, some of the live shows. Of course this will be done very care- fully. We’re trying to initially establish the label through this wonderful deal with Universal France and Sunnyside Records. Will the label just be a home for your work? Initial plans are to do a few records of mine, just to es- tablish the catalog, and then we’ll go from there and see what we want do next. As I said before I like to take things one step at a time and see how they develop. Drew Goren/Dare2/Sunnyside Records Do you feel that having your own label is the best way to cope with the huge changes that are happening in the music industry? I’ve always enjoyed a certain autonomy as far as being in control of my own destiny. Since 1971 I’ve had my own publishing company: all the composi- tional works that I’ve done have been in our own publishing company so I re- continued ... jazzweek.com • February 23, 2005 JazzWeek 12 Artist Q&A: Dave Holland (continued)

tain ownership of that. This is another step in that direction. I just feel that for those musicians who want that kind of independence this is a great opportu- nity. The industry is changing a great deal. People are no longer buying whole albums. The album may not be replaced by the idea of selling single tracks, but it will certainly be complimented by that. I can see a point in the future where we will no long go in record a whole album in one session or in one period. We may end up releasing something as a collection, but maybe we’ll release one, two, or three tracks at a time throughout the year. And make those tracks “ I think available for download. sometimes you I think the MP3 is having a dramatic effect on how things will develop over have to think the next few years. There are three special tracks that you can download for 99 cents. Or you can lowest common download the whole album for $9.99. So I think that this [new format] benefits denominator of everybody. Greater access; greater choice. I don’t know if you are aware of this, but you’ve been able to challenge jazz what people think radio policy of not playing material over seven or eight minutes. That’s a will be accepted. It pretty amazing tribute to you as a composer, a player, and a leader. I’m pretty amazed myself. Everybody told me that there was no guarantee that doesn’t always do radio would play the songs. The last quintet CD was a live double CD record- the best thing for ed at Birdland with some very extensive live improvisation on it. And we found that it was getting played. So the long track on the previous album, “What the music.” Goes Around,” was 19 minutes and a lot of people were playing it. I think sometimes you have to think outside the box. You don’t always need to play down to the lowest common denominator of what people think will be accept- ed. It doesn’t always do the best thing for the music. What I’m interested in is making the music happen in the way we want it to happen. And sometimes that involves a long track. Some things take time to be explored. It’s your music damn it! You can do what you want! Then you hear something that Ellington did where it had to fit on one side of a 78 and it’s a masterpiece. That parameter was something he worked with, and worked with very well. I’ve taken to the fact that the CD format is much lon- ger and therefore we don’t have the same kind of time restrictions.
