This Keith Zimmerman week, we have good news. First, a little background ... Kent Zimmerman At one time, No. 1 albums on the chart had seen 700 or more spins; as Tad Hendrickson we cajoled those stations who were padding their stats a little bit to be more CONTRIBUTING WRITER accurate, that peak number dropped to around 500. Our last chart with re- Tom Mallison ported airplay had 484 spins at No. 1 for Matt Wilson’s Wake Up! (to What’s PHOTOGRAPHY Happening) on Palmetto. The following week, it had 223. Barry Solof While the panel was reduced to about 80 percent of its previous size, that should have accounted for a drop of about 96 spins. What it told us is PUBLISHER that stations were not playing CDs anywhere nearly as much as they said, or Tony Gasparre as much as many thought they should. His performances are Kent Zimmerman Inothing like, but remind me completely of, Tony Bennett, Tad Hendrickson in that Curtis is the consummate entertainer. CONTRIBUTING WRITER An interesting story about Curtis Stigers isn’t covered in Tom Mallison PHOTOGRAPHY the Q&A with Tad Hendrickson in this issue, but it involves Barry Solof a favorite songwriter and performer of mine – especially from my college radio days – Nick Lowe.
