hile Curtis Stigers has a brand new record out on Con- cord, JazzWeek caught up with the singer/saxophonist af- Wter a long weekend as the defacto spokesman and host of the Jazz Festival in Stigers’ home- town of Boise. The singer resurrected his rock- star moves for a Friday night gig in the lo- cal hockey arena, and it sounded like he’d been through the ringer by the time JazzWeek caught up him on Monday morning. Nonethe- less, he proved himself to be a first rate racon- teur even as cobwebs were cleared out.

JW: Your sense of fun and showmanship is some- thing that seems all too rare in jazz today. CS: I don’t understand it. I just think you can be a great jazz musician with integrity, with attitude, with an edge, and still care about the audience. I’ve seen footage of Coltrane and Miles Davis play, and while it wasn’t exactly a Sammy Davis, Jr. show, but still…. El- vin Jones was amazing to watch on stage. There’s a dif- ference between being intense on stage and being inso- lent on stage. Too many young players are insolent or rude to the audience. I come from a different place. I grew up with Gene Harris as my mentor. He lived here in Boise and I saw him play a couple times a week. He was so inclusive. He was a different type of jazz guy than Coltrane or Davis, but he could burn, or blow the place down. And he’d still include the audience and still include the band. He made people feel like he wanted to be there, and that’s still important. I look at this album (I Think It’s Going to Rain Today) as more of a summation of what your Concord work Norman Seeff continued ... jazzweek.com • April 20, 2005 JazzWeek 13 Artist Q&A: Curtis Stigers

has moved towards rather than a departure. I definitely sort of found a place that I’ve been looking for for the last four re- cords. I grew up listening to the radio. It never occurred to me to listen to one kind of music. I just wanted to play music and I’d hear songs – I heard Sonny Rollins play “Blue Seven” and I wanted to do that; then I’d hear Neil Young do “Heart Of Gold” and I wanted to do that. It went on and on and on. But I’m a jazz singer: it’s what I do best. It’s where I live and where I belong. Was the transition from pop to jazz a difficult one? For a long time I kept jazz separate from pop and country and rock. I was a jazz purist. On my first Concord record, I wanted to show people that I was a real jazz singer. I wasn’t just some rock guy who now sang jazz. Then with the last record I wanted to see if I could take a bunch of songs that move me, that weren’t by Gershwin or whomever, and make them good jazz records. When I got in there I realized I could almost let go of whether it was jazz or pop or country, and just do songs. So you just picked up with this one, where you left off with the other? Yes. I was so comfortable with these guys that it was just like falling off a log to record with them again. They are such great players and they are open to the kind of thing that I was doing. They’re young guys who grew up with pop music, just like I did. Is your next one going to have this same approach? I have a list of hundreds and hundreds of songs that Stigers’ latest: I Think It’s Going to Rain I haven’t gotten to. Great songs that I want to record Today (Concord) debuts at No. 37 on the get put on the list. So who knows what I’m gonna do next. JazzWeek Jazz Album chart this week. Do you actually keep a list? Oh yeah. That’s the key to doing this, thinking “I need to record this” every time I hear a great song. I’m not going to be able to come up with a list of 10 really great songs I want to record in a month before a recording session. It’s a cumulative sort of thing. I’m always listening for great songs in the same way that I’m always listening for a great line. I think that the two originals are two of the best songs on the record. Good. I’m very lucky to be able to collaborate with . He’s in- credibly versatile: every style he plays in sounds like he was born there. That’s the thing that amazes me about him. Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans. But it always sounds like Larry. The way he swings and how he does it just works. He’s a great player and an amazing ar- ranger. He can write too. I just sort of pester him until he sends me a tape with seven or eight ideas on it. He’s so busy I have to do that a couple of months ahead. By the time I get the tape it’s filled with absolute gems. This time I got around to finishing two of them. Being a dad has really cramped my writing style considerably. I wrote most of my songs on my pop records, and I am a songwriter, but with a daughter is in pre-school it’s all I could do. Getting back to songwriting – that’s sort of my goal, if I have a goal, for the next record. “Playing Is it harder to write jazz songs? When you write pop songs, it’s easier to write these confessional songs. With live doesn’t jazz you have to be more clever about fitting in the really personal stuff with the kind of general Tin Pan Alley kind of stuff. It’s really hard to write a just sustain song that works really well with a quartet or quintet without it sounding sort me; it’s who of meandering. It either sounds too much like a Tin Pan Alley song, which means it’s not personal. Or it sounds too confessional or -ly that I am.” it doesn’t quite work the way a jazz tune does. To work in jazz you sort of have an AAB shape. You got to have a bridge. It can’t have a big chorus, like you’d have in a pop tune. What I’m saying is that I’m still learning how to write this kind of tune. I’m teaching myself how to balance the confessional with the old school, Rogers and Hart kind of shape. The good news is you have 40 or 50 years to figure it out, as opposed to a pop star, which is typically already irrelevant by the time they hit your age. I didn’t look at it that way when I made the switch; I just sort of needed to move forward with something that suited me best. Stepping back and looking at it, it really does make sense. When I hear your music, I think you go dangerously close to being hep-cat cliché when you scat and some of the songs you’ve done. But you have great musicians behind you, you exude a certain warmth and a sense of fun that makes the music appealing and you really likeable. Well thanks. Humor is a big part of what I do and I try to get it in there. I do realize that there is a very thin line between bad and good jazz singers. I grew up studying jazz singers. Mark Murphy was my hero. There was Ella and Sar- ah and Joe Williams and Sinatra. Doing that now, you can seem like a cliche or a lounge singer. Your right though, the band does save me. I figured out that if I’m gonna do a jazz version of a Dylan song, or a Kinks song, it’s got to have an edge of some sort. It’s gonna have to stand on its head if it’s going to be dif- ferent than a corny Steve Lawrence version. That is definitely the line I walk. So is it a good time to be a jazz singer? Everyone keeps saying that jazz has finally come around again. It’s pop mu- continued ... jazzweek.com • April 20, 2005 JazzWeek 15 Artist Q&A: Curtis Stigers

sic again and there’s a renaissance. But didn’t we hear that 10 years ago, and 10 years before that? Jazz is jazz, it’s the red-headed step child of pop music. It has a certain crowd and every once in a while an artist manages to sneak through to broader audience. Diana Krall did an amazing thing in that she stuck to her guns and played music that swings. Then suddenly 8 million people bought her records. It’s a fluke, but God love her. I happen to be a huge fan of her and what she does. Very few singers swing as well as she does. Is jazz singing the new black? No. There’s a few guys doing Sinatra impressions and few really good singers that at least touch on jazz. Other than that, it’s all about market- ing and what you wear if you are going to bust through.

Norman Seeff What’s the best part of being a jazz singer, versus a pop singer? It’s that I get to play. When I was a pop singer, I’d sit at home and wait for my singles to become hits. Then I’d go out and play. It costs so much to play that I’d just sit and wait. It was agony for me, because I grew up playing music. Playing live doesn’t just sustain me; it’s who I am.
