SPIROL offers engineering resources as well as stocking locations throughout the world to better serve your critical delivery needs. The bearing surfaces of a Stamped Nut are tapped as a secondary operation by pushing onto a rotating tap. Therefore, the thread cannot be guaranteed to be perpendicular STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS to the bearing surface. This can create camber. Hex Nuts are the most versatile and widely used nut design. Finished Hex Nuts are used with bolts to lock Jam Nuts against finished surfaces (see Jam Nuts on next page).

Heavy Hex Nuts are thicker across the flats than comparable Finished Hex Nuts. They are the strongest Hex Nuts because of their greater length of thread engagement, and resistance to stretching and widening. Our standard Finished and Heavy Hex Nuts are double chamfered but can be manufactured with a single chamfer and a face.

For applications where , lateral motion, or wedge type loads will tend to loosen the Hex Nut, it is common to use a to maintain joint integrity. The Hex Nut is used to provide the tension to the and the Jam Nut is used to provide a secondary load to the Hex Nut. The Jam Nut is not subject to the same operational conditions as the bolt and Hex Nut and therefore locks the assembly together.

Small Pattern Hex Machine Screw Nuts are designed to be used for light loads. In applications where there is limited room for wrenching, the smaller hex size is an advantage.

Any thread can be made into a Small Pattern Machine Screw Nut. As long as there is enough clearance between the wrench size distance and the thread, nominal thread sizes are available in any nut pattern. This allows a number of unique combinations which can be made to order in addition to our standard offering.

Cap Nuts (Acorn Nuts) are available in two basic configurations, open and closed. SPIROL® Cap Nuts are precision machined to withstand substantially higher tightening torque without stripping or having a bolt break through the dome, as can happen with two piece equivalent cap nuts. Generous counterbores allow for an unthreaded portion of the mating component to protrude above the surface.

Series C10 — Closed Cap Nuts Closed Cap Nuts decoratively finish the exposed ends of bolts. They offer protection from the sharp edges of bolts. Completely machined dome surfaces ensure safe handling and smooth and bright finishing.

Series C20 — Open Cap Nuts Open Cap Nuts are used for assembly of bolts whose lengths are imprecise and intended to go all the way through the fastener. Clean machining provides a superior surface for plating and offers a quality appearance.

SPIROL’s Engineers can assist in identifying the best standard Precision Machined Nut to meet the specific application performance requirements. SPIROL can also produce special variations of our standard lines of Machined Nuts. If a unique special Machined Nut is required, SPIROL will design and produce the special for either low or high volume applications.

Examples of special offerings include:

Special Sizes SPIROL’s standard line of Precision Machined Nuts can be easily altered to include metric sizes, specially designed non-standard threads, and non-standard thread pitch configurations. Other special variations include Hexagon Coupling Nuts, Tamperproof Nuts, Bolt Nuts, Railroad Nuts, Lamp and Lighting Parts, Pipe Couplings, Compression Nuts, and more. Should your requirement call for round, hex, square or other external configuration, oversized threads for plating, finely controlled internal diameters or even special machined features, SPIROL can accommodate your request.

SPIROL specializes in the low-volume manufacture of specialty Machined Nuts up to .750” (19mm) in hexagonal and .812” (21mm) round configurations.

Special Threads Precision Nuts can be machined with any inch or metric thread to ANSI H.28 or JIS standard, left or right-hand pipe threads, ANSI B1.1, ANSI B1.13M.

Special Materials In addition to the standard brass, SPIROL’s production technology enables us to produce Machined Nuts out of a variety of materials. The most common alternate materials are aluminum and 300 series austenitic stainless steel; however we also produce low volume Nuts out of 12L14 low carbon steel. Machined Nuts made from alternate materials are made to order in low volume.

Special Finishes SPIROL can provide virtually any finish on Machined Nuts. Standard finishes are plain and bright nickel plated. Alternate finishes include passivated, black oxide, zinc plate, zinc plate with chromate (in clear, yellow, olive or black color), bright acid tin, and phosphate coated.

Special Surface Configuration SPIROL can machine products with multiple diameters, grooves, knurls, threads, chamfers, heads, center holes, side holes, as well as those that are turned, shaved, broached, back drilled, and counterbored. In addition, Knurled Thumb Nuts can be provided with optional “face” knurls help lock the parts in place.

8 APPLICATION ENGINEERING IN PRACTICE

Machined Hex Nut in Wheel Chair

Application: A customer contacted SPIROL with an axle-alignment problem that they were having with a wheel chair. The application was a solid axle passing through the center hub of a wheel. The axles are cambered, causing extra for nuts that are not square to the threaded bolt. The conventional stamped nut was causing deflection in the axle when tightened due to the threads of the nut not being formed With Conventional Stamped Nut perpendicular to the faces of the nut. This deflection was causing poor tracking.

Solution: SPIROL’s solution was a Machined Hex Nut manufactured to the same specifications, but machined in one step from raw material rather than stamped and then threaded. SPIROL’s manufacturing methods allow for precise control of the cutting tools responsible for the final geometry of the product. In this case, threads running perpendicular to the faces of the nut were a major performance requirement. To the astonishment of the With Precision Machined customer, SPIROL provided a Precision Machined Hex Nut for a price comparable to the price Hex Nut they were paying for a lower-performance product.

Panel Nuts in Toggle Switch

Application: A manufacturer of toggle switches requested that SPIROL manufacture a cost- effective, custom Hex Panel Nut for their European market. This large, special Machined Nut had a 15mm wrench size and a M13 thread.

Solution: SPIROL Engineering recommended the use of a standard SPIROL Series H40 Hex Panel Nut body with a special M13 thread.

SPIROL’s standard Panel Nut has a .625” wrench size, converting to approximately 15.9mm across the flats versus the originally requested 15mm wrench size. The customer was early enough in the design stage to change to the standard .625” wrench size. By using the standard wrench size, SPIROL was able to machine the Nut out of commercially available raw material and standard tooling.

The customer collaborated with SPIROL on the production timing of the part such that SPIROL was able to manufacture the Nut with the custom M13 thread right after the production of the standard Panel Nut on the multi-spindle machine for a total cost savings of 95%!
