Aalisarnermut, Piniarnermut Nunalerinermullu Naalakkersuisoqarfik Departementet for Fiskeri, Fangst og Landbrug Uumasunik Nakorsaqarfik Inuussutissalerinermullu Oqartussaaffik (UNIO) Veterinær- og Fødevaremyndigheden i Grønland (VFMG) The Veterinary and Food Authority of Greenland (VFMG) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture has issued the following guidelines for bringing dogs and/or cats into Greenland. The guidelines also cover travelling with these animals within Greenland. In order to protect the Greenlandic Sled Dog as a breed Act no. 18 of 30 October 1998 establishes a so called sled dog district. The territory is defined as follows: th ● North of Greenland on the West Coast from north of 66 northern degree of latitude, th ● The entire East Coast down to Kap Farvel, east of the 44 western degree of longitude. Within this district, only Greenlandic Sled Dogs may be kept and it is strictly prohibited to bring other dogs into these areas. This concerns both dogs travelling onboard cruise ships with tourists and local dogs travelling within Greenland. In accordance to Article 19, subsection 2 of Act no. 18 of 30th October 1998 by Greenland´s Home Rule regarding sled dogs, it is prohibited to introduce dogs of any race into the sled dog districts. The same Article states that it is prohibited to reintroduce Greenlandic Sled Dogs once they have left the sled dog district. Working dogs and service dogs for disabled people may be permitted admittance to the sled dog district, but only after receiving a permit from the Government of Greenland. Working dogs are solely defined as the dogs used by police or by the authorities in relation to border control. -

There are many ways in which these topics can be investigated. This article provides an overview of a method based on an archaeological scientific methodology developed to address human and animal mobility in prehistory, the so-called strontium isotope tracing system. Recently, new research has enabled this methodology to be further developed so as to be able to apply it to archaeological textile remains and thus to address issues of textile trade. In the following section, a brief introduction to strontium isotopes in archaeology is presented followed by a state-of-the- art summary of the construction of a baseline to characterize Denmark’s bioavailable strontium isotope range. The creation of such baselines is a prerequisite to the application of the strontium isotope system for provenance studies, as they define the local range and thus provide the necessary background to potentially identify individuals originating from elsewhere. Moreover, a brief introduction to this novel methodology for ancient textiles will follow along with a few case studies exemplifying how this methodology can provide evidence of trade. The strontium isotopic system the strontium isotopic signatures are not changed in – from – Strontium is a member of the alkaline earth metal of a geological perspective very small time spans, due to Group IIA in the periodic table. -

Heritage NL Fieldnotes Series, 007, June 2020 The History and Practice of Bark Tanning in Newfoundland and Labrador [email protected] -- Heritage NL -- PO Box 5171, St. John’s, NL, Canada, A1C 5V5 By Katie Crane and Dale Gilbert Jarvis, Heritage NL Introduction In June 2017, Bell Island native, craft producer, and maker Clare Fowler appeared on Heritage NL’s Living Heritage Podcast to talk about her work, which focuses on the use of seal fur and seal leather. In the course of the conversation, she brought up the topic of seal skin leather boots, and the use of birch bark in tanning the leather. Regarding sealskin boots, she noted: They have such a historical and cultural significance on the Northern Peninsula. So many people have used them and they were just like a necessity of life. They're absolutely beautiful and stunning but not too many people are making them anymore and not too many people are doing the birch bark processing. I know a number of people who are experimenting with it but we were only able to track down one gentleman who was actually still doing it on somewhat of a small scale because the demand for it was lessening over time. The tradition of bark tanning and the use of bark mixtures for the preservation of textiles has a long history in Newfoundland and Labrador. This article traces the linguistic history of the verb form of the word bark, the use of bark as a preservative and colourant, describes the process involved in the creation of tanned materials in CRANE and JARVIS. -

INTRODUCTION Both leather dressing and fur dressing have an origin which may be regarded as identical and which date back to a hazy period of antiquity. Ancient man killed animals in order to obtain food. The animals also furnished a skin which, after undergoing certain treatments, could be used as a covering for the body. Man had to, and did, find some means of preventing decay in a more or less permanent fashion. -

Violently killed thousands of years ago, the corpses of men, women, and children have been naturally preserved by the unique chemistry of Northern Europe’s bogs. Today, archaeologists and anthropologists are acting as crime-scene investigators. They’re using knowledge of chemistry, geology, and human behavior to better understand the circumstances that led to these gruesome deaths. Questions What are some differences between Europe’s bog bodies and their more glamorous cousins, Egyptian mummies? Bog bodies are “accidental mummies,” preserved by the natural chemistry of the bog. Egyptian mummies, on the other hand, were intentionally preserved in a complicated process developed over time by experts. Another difference between bog bodies and Egyptian mummies is the bodies themselves. Bog bodies are anonymous victims of ritual sacrifice. Egyptian mummies are mostly royalty or high-ranking officials honored with fantastic splendor. Archaeologists are challenging the second assumption, however. According to one expert quoted in National Geographic magazine, all the bog bodies discovered in Ireland “were buried on borders between ancient Irish kingdoms. -

Unlike most ancient human remains, bog bodies have preserved their skin and other soft tissues through natural tanning processes in the bogs. We present the first comprehensive strontium isotope investigation of the Haraldskær Woman and her garments, dated to the Scandinavian Pre-Roman Iron Age (500-1 BC).
