Historical Note:

John Leon Funk (1909-1997) of Coshocton County, Ohio, married Ruth Eleanor Blue (1909- 1989), of Defiance County, Ohio, on December 23, 1933. The couple had one child, John “Jack” Leon Funk, born in 1943. After John Sr.’s service in World War II, the family moved to Columbia, Missouri, in 1945. In Columbia, John Sr. worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation and Ruth was a teacher at Grant elementary school and later a supervisor of student teachers at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In the 1970s-1990s, John Sr. researched the Funk and Blue families extensively.

The Funk family is descended from Jorg Funck, born circa 1714 in the upper Rhine valley in what is now Germany. George Funk is the English version of his name; records show his name with either spelling, depending on whether they were in English or German. Funk immigrated to Philadelphia and took an oath of allegiance in 1741. He had seven children, all born in Pennsylvania.

George Funk’s first child was Peter Funk, born circa 1745 in Pennsylvania. He married Catherine Frankhauser in 1771. They had four children together and moved to Frederick County, Virginia. There, Catherine died, and Peter married Mary Rinehart.

Peter’s second child with Catherine was Michael Funk, born in 1774 in Lancaster County, PA. Michael married Savinia (or Lavinia) Slusher, daughter of Frederick and Anna Engely Huntsiker Slusher, in Frederick County, VA in 1798. They had ten children, farmed in Washington County, PA, and retired in 1837 to Greene County, PA.

Michael and Savinia Funk’s three oldest children moved to Coshocton County, Ohio, in the 1830s with their spouses, each purchasing about 80-100 acres adjacent to the others. They were Jacob and Anne Margaret Miller Funk, David and Rhoda Funk, and Daniel and Mary Funk Smith. Many descendants of these families live in Coshocton County, Ohio, to the present day.

John Leon Funk (1909-1997) was descended from David and Rhoda Funk, John and Agnes J. Brier Funk, John L. and Flora May Pigman Funk, and Earl Bene and Nellie Jane Huff Funk. These families and others appear in this collection.

The Blue family is descended from John Blaw, who died in Somerset County, New Jersey, in 1757. Numerous spellings of the last name appear in the records over time, including Blue, Blew, Blu, Blaw, and Blau. The family is Dutch in origin, and immigrated first to Brazil, and then to New Amsterdam (New York) in the 1600s.

John Blaw’s first son, John Blew II, was born circa 1691, and married Cattron Van Meter circa 1712. They had five children. He and his sons moved to West Virginia, and John II died in 1770.

John II’s second son was Michael Blue, born circa 1720 in Somerset County, NJ. He married Martha Blackford. They lived in New Castle County, Delaware, and Berkeley County, Virginia. Later they lived in Jefferson County, West Virginia. They had ten children. After Martha died, Michael remarried a woman named Sarah.

Michael and Martha Blackford Blue’s first child was Uriah Blue, born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, in 1752. He married Ruth Van Meter, and served in the Revolutionary War. After the war, they moved first to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and later to Nelson County, Kentucky.

In 1799, they moved to Miami County, Ohio. They had 11 children. Their three eldest sons – James, Michael, and Uriah II -- moved to Ohio with Uriah I and Ruth. Many of their descendants remained in Ohio throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Uriah Blue II was the fifth child and third son of Uriah and Ruth Blue, and he moved to Ohio with his family as a child. He married Jane Stite, with whom he had five children. After she died, he married Margaret DeWeese, with whom he had 10 children. After she died, he married Charlotte Clark.

Ruth Eleanor Blue Funk was descended from Uriah II and Margaret DeWeese Blue; Lewis DeWeese and Martha Elizabeth Kelley Blue, who moved their family to Defiance County, Ohio; and Clarence George “Bob” and Margaret Edith Davis Blue.

Descendants of Blue ancestors have formed the National Blue Family Association and hold a Blue family reunion annually. John Funk was involved with this organization, attended the family reunions, and corresponded regularly with Blue family members who were also conducting genealogical research.

Scope and Content Note:

Genealogy – General

This series contains general correspondence regarding the genealogies of both the Funk and Blue families. Much of the correspondence is arranged chronologically, with a few separate folders of correspondence with specific genealogical researchers regarding specific family lines. Some correspondence is with other amateur genealogists conducting similar research and some is with professional genealogists conducting research on Funk’s behalf. Folder 1 contains a calendar indexing all correspondence from 1977-1982. Also in this series are working files containing notes and information on both lines, census information, and information gleaned from a genealogy class.

Funk Family

This series consists of materials pertaining to John L. Funk’s ancestors. The bulk of the series is comprised of files on individuals and their families. Each file contains family group sheets, and

many include correspondence and notes; biographical records; photographs of grave stones; and original and photocopied primary sources such as birth and death records, marriages, obituaries, wills, deeds, and court documents. The folder titled “Funk, General” includes a document calendar indexing some of the sources Funk used and collected in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as well as correspondence and some written histories. This folder and the folder, “George Funk and his Descendants,” are good sources of summative information about the family.

Blue Family

This series contains materials pertaining to Ruth Eleanor Blue Funk’s ancestors. Similar to the Funk Family series, it primarily consists of genealogical files on specific individuals and their families, with family group sheets; correspondence and notes; biographical records; photographs of grave stones; and original and photocopied primary sources such as birth and death records, marriages, obituaries, wills, deeds, and court documents. The Blue Family series also includes information on the National Blue Family Association and its annual Blue family reunions, some personal and biographical materials on Ruth Eleanor Blue Funk, and research materials on the 100th Ohio Infantry Regiment in the Civil War.
