MANUSCRIPT DIVISION

Scope Note

The papers of Ambrose Caliver (1894-1962), educator, administrator, and civil servant, span the period from 1915 to 1959 and measure twenty-two linear feet. The collection documents Caliver's personal life, as well as his professional dedication to the cause of Negro education.

Between 1917 and 1930 Caliver held a series of teaching and administrative positions at

Fisk University. Correspondence, writings, and teaching materials document Caliver's rise from teacher to dean. From 1919 to 1922 Caliver also headed the Tennessee Anti-Tuberculosis

Society for Negroes. Many of his writings and letters address the tuberculosis epidemic.

In 1930, after receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University, Caliver became Senior

Specialist in the Education of Negroes at the U.S. Office of Education. During this time, he conducted a series of surveys concerning Negro education. This collection contains data, drafts, and completed publications of the surveys. In 1941 Caliver initiated and directed "Freedom's

People," a series of national radio broadcasts that focused on participation of Negroes in

American life. Caliver's papers contain administrative files and photographs from this effort on behalf of the U.S. Office of Education.

Caliver's leadership roles in educational organizations and publications, including the

National Educational Outlook Among Negroes, Adult Education Association, National

Association of Collegiate Deans and Registrars, the National Conference on Fundamental

Problems in the Education of Negroes, and the Tennessee Colored Anti-Tuberculosis Society are well-documented throughout his papers. In 1986 Moorland-Spingarn acquired the papers (through Dr. Earle West of Howard

University's School of Education) from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Otto.
