ANJOZOROBE, 2 hours north-east of Tana, a small town perched along the ridges of 2 hills. From the volunteer house, there’s a great view across a wide plain and curving river. The house is inside a small walled courtyard along with the house of host and his wife. He is a teacher of Malagasy history and folklore, and his daughter speaks good English. The area is rich in history and myths. The population of Anjozorobe is about 60 000 adults Their economy is based on agriculture, growing rice, onions, tobacco, and keeping small herds of cattle. Six kilometres from the town is a rain-forest area called “Alan’ Anjozorobe”. At 66 500 hectares, it is among the last major remnants of natural primary forest in the Malagasy highlands, and it contains various endemic fauna and flora species.

Volunteers lodgings :
Description : A house with 1 floor (opposite to the landlord’s). The ground floor with a big room as dining room and kitchen ; and upstairs with two rooms as bedroom. It has electricity and running water. The tap, the bathroom and the toilet are outside
Security : The landlord and his family live next door ( Mrs Nasolo). Closed enclosure The lodging of the volunteers is near the Gendarmerie at 20 m. It is 30 m from the Chief of District house too.
Shopping There is a Baker, 4 butchers, fresh vegetables and fruits : plentiful.
Market days: - On Thursdays in Anjozorobe. - On Tuesdays in Antanandava, 15 kms from Anjozorobe. - On Fridays in Ambongamarina, 15 kms from Anjozorobe. - On Saturdays in Mangamila (on the way to Tana) at 22 kms by taxi brousse.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND : Mr Nasolo knows the history 1-The existence of ANOSY FITO (seven islands) 2-AMBATOMANITRASINA : it is the highest mountain of Anjozorobe situated in the forest. 3-AMBOHIBELOMA : a village fortified by Sihanaka people from Ambatondrazaka.. 4-ANJOZOROBE : There was a big offering done by the famous king Andrianampoinimerina in this area - It is also named after the reeds (zozoro) which were abundant in this area.
- The river MANANARA with the waterfall of ANGODONGODONA (8 kms) and the waterfalls of ANGONGOMA. - The tomb of RABOZAKA in AMBONGAMARINA at 15 kms. He was one of the patriotic men during the war of rebellion against the French colonization. - There are lakes in AMPARIHIMBOROMANGA 9 kms. - A little bit far at 45 kms in AMPARIHINANDRIAMBAVY, lays a sacred lake where water turtles appear and disappear. - The natural forest of AFATRAPEO at 8 kms East of Anjozorobe is managed by the FANAMBY NGO. - Visiting the AMBOHIMIARIMBE mountains 1476 m at 8 km from Anjozorobe
The origin of the population of ANJOZOROBE: 1- WAK WAK : The early immigrants who were forced to flee from the Centre of Madagascar and stayed in ANJOZOROBE in 13 and 14 Centuries 2- VALONJATOLAHY which means 800 men settled by the king Andrianampoinimerina in Anjozorobe. The Civil servants and Authorities.are the last flock of people
G –Week ends:
- Visit and exploring the places mentioned in the Historical Background with Mr Nasolo if he is available - To the mid- west in AMPEFY to see the geyser, waterfall (chute de la LILLY), the Virgin island, the Dodwell Trust Center and for sunbathing or swimming at KAVITAHA swimming pool. (5 000 Ar) - Best swimming in the sea at Foulpointe and Fenerive Est (sea), camping place available, passing through TOAMASINA the east Harbour (by Taxi brousse). - To Andasibe for rainforest and wildlife, lemurs. - To Beforona ( further to Andasibe) : an agro environment Centre. It has dormitory. - To go fishing in MANANARA river.
Recommendations
- You must tell Mr Nasolo when you are intending to go out from the town by bicycle.
- Take care when you ride in town with your bicycle since the Taxi-brousse drivers are running fast
- When you go to sleep, make sure that all the windows and the doors are all closed.
