The Year of Mercy:

Teresa of Kolkata was canonized this month. Perhaps more than any other individual in recent memory, she embodied the face of the merciful Christ for the world. Her selfless service on the streets of Kolkata inspired people of all ages and many faith traditions. This Week: Embrace her as your role model. Let her inspire and challenge you.

New Members Are Always Welcome! Our parish family extends a warm welcome to all who join us for worship. If you are new to the area or coming home, we invite you to register and make St. Elizabeth Ann Seton your parish. All applicants may contact the Parish Office at (248) 879-1310 to set up an appointment to meet with Father Norm Nawrocki. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church - saintliz.org Page 3 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time In place of Father Norm’s article this week, we instead have a reflection by author Gina Loehr. Words from "The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus knew these self-righteous religious leaders were complaining. And he knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived example of welcoming the company of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the importance of welcoming those who have been lost. Today's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup of three parables that all teach a similar message: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost coin, and Father Norm rejoice over the return of the lost son. The theme can be summarized in the simple directive: rejoice don't reject. When someone who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause for gossip, sideways glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or say. Rather a genuine smile and word of welcome would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the community would be totally appropriate. Too often we become complacent about our Christian company. We get used to seeing the same people every Sunday and forget about the "lost" men and women who are outside the bounds of our comfort zone. Jesus gives us the image of an active shepherd who goes "after the lost one until he finds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully" until she finds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, embraced and kissed him," in spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they finally do come back home.

Bible Study and Video Commentary on the Books of Judges and Ruth

Join us for this 9 week bible study on the books of Judges and Ruth. Judges provides religious perspective on Israel’s successes and failures while they occupied the Promised Land until the rise of the monarchy. In the book of Judges, considerable importance is attached to the religious and political development of the tribal life of the Israelites. The people are bound together solely by their faith in YHWH. The Book of Ruth is a beautiful story of love, loyalty, trust and faith. This book also provides some history on how Jesus comes from both Jewish and gentile roots. Each week's lesson includes a reading from one of the above books of scripture, study questions, a group discussion and a video commentary by either Fr. Mitch Pacwa or Fr. Scott Courtney (both of whom have been featured on EWTN). Study Materials include a New Collegeville Bible Commentary booklet on Judges/Joshua. (Note: those who attended our previous study on Joshua already have this commentary). The bible alone will be used for the Book of Ruth (no commentary booklet will be used). Cost: There is no charge to attend. Judge/Joshua commentaries will be available to purchase for $10. Dates: Tuesday evenings starting September 20th through November 15th Times: 7:00 – 8:30 PM Location: SEAS classroom #3 & 4

We are losing several MOWs in the next month, which will adversely affect the number of members on each team. The responsibility of a MOW includes getting to Mass about 15 minutes before Mass starts, welcoming those attending Mass, assisting with the offertory collection, bundling the collection after Mass, handing out bulletins, and straightening out the pews after Mass. You would be assigned to a team that works at the Mass you volunteer for every other month. I am hoping that you will hear God knocking at your door, asking you to donate some of you time to St. Elizabeth. We are known as a welcoming parish, we need your help to maintain that reputation.
