RANCE'S DAY " was celebrated at the School on the date F appointed by the Committee, viz., July 7th. The popular French hymn and the " Marseillaise" were sung with great gusto by the whole School at 9 a.m. French flags floated over the main building and the Pavilions. A collection for the French Red Cross Fund realised a sum of £7 10s., which 94 EDWAED ALLEYN MAGAZINE. was sent to the Lord Mayor of London. All are to be congratu- lated on this excellent result.

THE following notes re the Cadet Corps may be of interest:— (I.) All boys of the senior School who are twelve years of age, or over, and who are remaining for the next term, are eligible for joining. (II.) The cost of joining is, for the first term: Entrance fee 10s., and terminal subscription 2s. 6d. for first year. Each following term 3s. £>d. The pay the subscriptions of their own scholars. (IH.) The hours of drill will be as at present, and in addition a drill will take place on Friday afternoon after School. All boys in the Corps will have to go through a regular musketry course. (IV.) Tunics, belts, and gaiters are returnable to the Corps., On drill days boys will come to School in uniform. (V.) Beyond the above-mentioned subscriptions there is no further charge to Cadets, except in the case of field days and for attendance at camp. In such cases the attendance will be quite voluntary, and special arrangements will be made. A full set of instructions will be published early next Term.

THE " M.P.'s Prize," kindly presented to the School by Lt.-Col. F. Hall, M.P. for , was this year awarded by popular vote to J. E. Appleyard, late Captain of the School. Four names were on the ballot paper.

THE following boys were confirmed by the Bishop of South- wark at the College Chapel on Wednesday, June 9th:—F. P. Beagley, F. Lethbridge, R. D. Nightingale, J. Phillips, H. F. Reed, C. 0. Robinson, E. A. Rothon, B. Shales, E. Vines, W. F. West. ^

THE preacher at the Half-Term Service this Term was the Rev. P. T. Browning, Wilberforce Missioner to the Diocese of South wark.

COMMEMORATION Services were held in the College Chapel on Sunday, June 20th. The preacher at the morning service was the Rev. A. E. Rawlinson, an Old Boy of Alleyn's School. In the afternoon the Rev. Dr. T. C. Fry, Dean of Lincoln, delivered MAGAZINE. 95

a sermon on the text " What shall it profit a man if he gain the •whole world but shall lose his soul?" Owing doubtless to the fact that so many members of-the Foundation have joined H.M. Forces the afternoon service was not so well attended as usual.

WE much regret to learn that Lieutenant J. H. Knight-Adkin, of the 4th Gloucesters (T.F.), was wounded at the end of June in the Dardanelles. He had charge of a form in the School in 1913, and last year as an officer of the O.T.C. was present at our drill inspection. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.

ME. WILLIAMS has been at the • front since the beginning of June, and is thus far safe. In a letter we received lately from him he makes a suggestion which will save a deal of discussion as to how the holidays should be spent. He proposes that the whole School make munitions. OOK Art Master would like it to be known that boys have an opportunity of winning a prize which will be awarded .for practically any sort of original drawing made during the holidays or previously. Competitors must hand in these works of Art at the beginning of next term. ON Monday, July 5th, the Catnberwell Gun Brigade (R.F.A.), which has been raised by the popular M.P. for Dulwich—-Colonel Fred. Hall—-made a farewell parade through the Borough of before leaving for York and other places to undergo training in big gun work. In honour of the occasion the Townley Park portion of our playfield was decorated with flags, and there the whole School, with friends, parents, and the girls of James Allen's School, assembled to see the cavalcade, some four thousand seven hundred strong, go by. This, according to more or less inaccurate time-keepers, took from thirty-five to forty-eight minutes. At the head rode Colonel F. Hall, and among the officers were A. Mitchell, R. S. S. Mitchell, L. Mi S. Prior and H. Prior, Alleyn Old Boys. Loud and continuous cheering was the order of the day, and we are informed that the cheers of the. girls had far more vigour than those of the boys. Be that as it may, we are sure the men of the Camberwell Gun Brigade were pleased with their enthusiastic reception at Alleyn's, and will fight none the worse, for it. It was a happy idea to give the School and its friends an opportunity to show their appreciation of the Gun Brigade, of which all are proud. * 1 96 EDWARD ALLEYN MAGAZINE. TRifle Club, Certificates.—"Rifleman" certificates have"been awarded this term to F. J. R. Poynor 265 points, J. D. K. Lunnon 262 points, L. J. Boot 255 points. It is gratifying to be able to record that of the ninety odd "Rifleman" and "Skilled Shot" certificate-holders which the School has produced in the past, the great majority are now serving their country ashore or afloat. To obtain a " Rifleman " certificate of the N.R.A. a score of 253 points out of 300 is required in 30 consecutive shots. For a " Skilled Shot" certificate or badge 283 points must be made. But in both cases it is permitted to use aperture sights and slings.

Swimming. EFERENCE was made in the last number of the Magazine R to the fact that as the Dulwich Baths were closed our swimmers would labour under serious disadvantages. However, we arranged to go to the Forest Hill Baths, but could not manage more than one attendance a week. Instructors were engaged to give lessons to beginners, and many boys, particularly from the Junior School, availing themselves of the opportunity have learned to swim. On the occasion of the Secondary School Sports on June 21st we 'sent a number of competitors to the Shoreditch Baths. We were able to secure first and second places in several heats in the Junior events and in two of the team races, but in the finals our sole success was'the second place in the race for the Championship Shield. Despite this our representatives are to be congratulated on the excellent fight they made. Some of the races were very close, and in two of the events a matter of inches lost us the second position. It was evident that in most cases lack of training robbed us of victory, and had we been able to devote the usual attention to our swimming it is very probable that several first and second places would have been ours. Our representatives were :— One Length, breast stroke (under 12).—R. Davison. One Length, breast stroke (under 13).—F. W. Snow, A. W. Harvey. One Length, breast stroke (under 14).—C. Loughborough, L. CRIBB'S. CONGRATULATIONS to F. J. R. Poynor on gaining a rifleman's certificate with a score of 265 out of 300. Would that England had j ust now a few million more of her sons so well qualified to defend her shores! On Founder's Day, an interesting match was played between a team of Cribb's Old Boys and a School XI. In spite of a disastrous start Cribb's only just failed to win, thanks to A. Wooster, 48 runs, T. Emms, 26, and W. H. Heron, 19. Wooster also took seven wickets with an average of less than five runs per wicket. The game was played in brilliant sunshine, amid ideal sur- roundings on the new ground, and proved a very happy fixture. _ A. E. C. ROPER'S. MR. LINXELL has kindly consented to assist in the management of the sports and games of the House. We hope that he may have a happy and successful time. The House regrets the loss of its Captain, W. F. West, after a short term of office ; all wish him every success in the future. W. E. Hook succeeds him as House Captain. Congratulations to G. M. Brand and A. W. Clarke on being made House Prefects. In cricket our 1st team, under the energetic captaincy of W. E. Hook, has fully maintained its good form; G. M. Brand has batted in his usual good Style, and the bowling of the Captain and A. E. Speakman, and the fielding have produced good results. H. Vernon has of late improved in batting. The 2nd team has not done so well, and now has lost its best bowler, H. C. Tayler, who is assisting the 1st. This leaves much for the Captain, C. L. Hitch, to do. The 3rd team is also doing well; the most prominent players are the Captain, D. W. Kent, S. C. Carter and C. E. Shatford. The two reserve teams have done fairly. Of them P. A. Button and E. A. Wakefield proved to be the best. Under the able captaincy of L. J. Boot, who has recently gained his rifleman's certificate, the membership and efficiency of our shooting contingent have steadily increased. Among the more recent additions to our numbers the following boys have given evidence of special promise:—H. C. Tayler, P. A. Florence and E. D. Whittaker. 106 EDWARD ALLEYN MAGAZINE. WEEKS was one of nine who on May 13th held an isolated and critical position from morning until night and so prevented the enemy from advancing. There had been a fierce bombardment and all supporting troops had been withdrawn, but the trench — now blown to atoms — was the key to the posi- tion. Every moment of that awful day shells fell around these men, but they held on, until at night reinforcements arrived and the position was saved. This was not an act done in a mad, hot, excited moment, but was a calm and sustained effort, and none but those who were in that terrible trench can imagine what it was like. The 24th took part with other units in a big fight on May 25th, when some German trenches which had defied our troops for some time were taken. In this action the regiment suffered terrible losses, but Boxall survived that awful day, only to be shot dead by a sniper next morning when on sentry-go.

The School on Old Boys' Day did not present the usual scene of life and gaiety; as so many Old Boys are away with His Majesty's Forces fighting our country's battles, it had been very properly decided that the celebration should be limited to a cricket match. The School team is undoubtedly a promising one. In G. M. Brand and H. H. Farthing there are two very useful batsmen, whilst F. C. Picton has a style in bowling which will be found very disconcerting to many batsmen. He was rather expensive in this match, but a slow bowler on a hard wicket is bound to suffer sometimes. It is probable that had Farthing put himself on in Picton's place earlier the Old Boys would not have played out time. The School 2nd XI. is a thoroughly keen and sporting team, and although they were " up against" a stronger team and never looked like winning, yet they did not let their efforts flag. It was noticeable in both matches that the boys were very quick in the field, taking and returning the ball cleanly and quickly, thereby saving a large number of runs. The Lawn Tennis Section has taken full advantage of the long spell of good weather, and it has been no uncommon sight to see all six courts fully occupied. The ladies have embarked on a Doubles Tournament, and it is expected there will be keen rivalry and many closely contested games before the winners are announced. A match has been played against the Camber L.T.C. ladies, and resulted in an overwhelming victory for Alleyn by 8 events to nil (one drawn). Our versatile groundman, Cobra, in spite of the limited time he is now employed on the ground owing to war economies, manages to keep it in very good order. The rest the wicket is enjoying after thirty-eight years of constant use should be of considerable benefit to it. Any Old Boys and their lady friends wishing for relaxation and exercise are cordially welcomed, and applications for member- ship should be sent to Mr. A. F. Day (Acting Hon. Secretary), 51, Court Lane, Dulwich. The Club was pleased to place a quantity of its cricket apparatus at the disposal of the "Camberwell Gun Brigade," R.F.A., at the invitation of Lt.-Col. Fred. Hall. It is pleasant to feel that the Club's resources in their forced inactivity are the means of providing enjoyment to our soldiers during the long and trying period of their training. The Club wishes all success and a safe return to our local Battery. EDWARD ALLEYN MAGAZINE. 109 ®ur Cambridge Xettcr. AMBRIDGE University, as was predicted, has experienced C the saddest and strangest May Term. May-week—the last week in Term, which in normal times is the week of the year at Cambridge, when most examinations are finished, usually full of festivities of all kinds, with the water of the Cam hardly able to be seen for punts and canoes, and when undergraduates act as hosts to their people—passed by quite ordinarily with no excitement in it at all, except the usual amount on the last night of Term, with its preparations for " going down." Not once, during Term time, were College cricket fields seen in use. Occasionally some people played tennis, while a few were ener- getic enough to go on the river—the energy consisting apparently in lying down to read or sleep in apunt. As for the rest, they found sufficient exercise in O.T.C. drill, walking or cycling. The number of people running about Cambridge in grey uniforms still testifies to the keenness and strength of the O.T.C. There have been several good preachers at the 'Varsity Church this Term, and one at least is worth mentioning here, namely, the Bishop of London. He came shortly after his visit to the Trenches, and consequently the Church was packed and over- crowded. He preached on the need of fortitude at the present time, both in the nation as a whole and in the individual, and the possibility of obtaining this fortitude only through God's Holy Spirit. He is one of the few people who has told us that in a number of cases it is our duty at the present time to com- plete our course, but in any case to be ready and prepared to help. We had the great privilege of welcoming to Cambridge during the past Term in two consecutive week-ends two " Old Boys " of the School, C. S. Herridge and H. T. J. Clark. They were escorted round The University and went through most of the Colleges. Sunday afternoon in each case was spent in King's College Chapel—" a magnificent building" in the visitors' own words, where, again using their own words, they enjoyed " a most magnificent musical service "—a great deal of which was unaccompanied. Here they showed their good taste, for there is no doubt that the service at King's from a musical point of view is one of the best in England ; it is only very rarely indeed that one finds anything to criticise. The visitors enjoyed their short stay, and are quite willing and keen to come again. The academical year 1914—15 has now closed, and what the next, which begins in October, will be like, nobody knows. The 110 EDWARD ALLEYN MAGAZINE. only certain thing is that, if Cambridge still stands, there will be a term of some sort, even if the people in residence only consist of Senior Members of the 'Varsity, medically unfit under- graduates, and "natives of Asia and Africa, who are not of European parentage." At present there is a large number of entries of " Freshmen " for next year, but a number of these will, no doubt, not come up, and many who do will simply come up with the intention of joining the O.T.C. and of taking commissions. A. ARCH, Selwyn College. Xetters. From SERGT. EDWARD J. PLUMRIDGE, 1st London Sanitary Coy., B.A.M.C. (T.F.). HEN I last wrote to you I was acting as a volunteer stretcher- W bearer, and after that experience I was glad to get back to have a rest. This I did in thorough earnest until about A month later, when we went up in a hurry and stood by during the Neuve Chapelle battle. We then had another spell of rest, and after being under canvas about a month moved off to Belgium once more after the first gas attack of the Germans. Our section spent a fortnight in a ruined estaminet in a village about three miles from the town where we were billeted last February. This town is now a heap of ruins through the persistent and devastat- ing artillery fire of the Huns. We were chiefly engaged in burying dead horses, generally under fire. Whilst in this village we were shelled almost daily by high explosive and shrapnel combined shells, but the shelling was more intended for moral effect than for military value. On Whit-Monday morning I was awakened by a terrific bom- bardment, and finally was compelled by it to arise at 2.30 a.m. At 2.45 a.m. I saw for the first time a "gassed" man, and immediately afterwards smelt the gas. A little later, using our first field dressings as respirators, three of us set out for the " City of the Dead " (as we call it) to find " gassed " soldiers. We went in our thirty-cwt. motor lorry, and after what seemed an endless time reached our objective—the square of the town. We dressed one wounded man out of six lying blown to pieces by a high explosive shell, and loaded our vehicle with about twenty gassed men. The town was full of gas, and shrapnel and asphyxiating shells were dropping all around us. Finally after an hour's stay in a veritable hell we returned, having at " Hell Fire Corner " to run the gauntlet of bursting shrapnel. We were EDWARD ALLEYN MAGAZINE. Ill fortunate to get through without mishap, for at that time a police corporal, who was about seventy-five yards away from where we were standing with our lorry, was hit by a shell. One of my companions was gassed, and I had great difficulty in preventing him from falling over the back of the lorry as we rushed through the square. Personally only my eyes were affected and they watered very badly. When we got back to our billet there were hundreds of gassed men lying about, and we took four loads up to the huts two miles away, where they were attended to. I can assure you that this gassing business is the most awful form of torture that could be devised. My heart ached for the poor chaps, and I now hate the Germans for the torture they have inflicted. Imagine a fine tall young man normally as strong as a lion fighting for every breath and gradually being suffocated in open air and you will partially gather what gassing means. It is wicked and diabolical, and when the Germans say the death is painless they are liars absolutely. I am not a weakling but I felt like sobbing my heart out over the suffering I saw. In February our men fought the enemy with a kind of impersonal feeling but now, now, it is with a determination for revenge that they go forward to fight, die, and finally, we feel sure, to conquer. That has been my worst experience. Later on when collecting letters I had a very narrow escape from death by a shell which killed two and injured ten men after it had inissed me. I should very much like to have a copy of the School Magazine if you could send me one. During my period of leave I hope to visit the School for whose success I send best wishes. From Pte. W. E. W. HAWKINS, 24th County of London Regiment (The Queen's). I expect you heard of our attack on the German lines, where we lost heavily, but took the trench and about thirty prisoners. The holding of this position the next day was, however, a terrible ordeal. Still we held on, gradually lessening in numbers, until the right of the line was forced by the enemy's artillery to retire. We did not lose the position ; another regiment was put into it. My chum, Cyril S. Wells, an Old Boy of Alleyn's, went down under a German bomb, the worst things we have to encounter. He managed to crawl to our rear trenches, and so got to hos- pital, and is now in hospital at Birkenhead progressing well. I feel a bit shaken after all that we have gone through; my limbs ache all over and I am rather pulled down. The town in which we are now staying has in its time seen some very severe fighting; it was taken from the French, and 112 EDWAED ALLEYN MAGAZINE. later on they took it from the Huns, who, as the poor inhabitants tell me, committed here some of their worst atrocities. For the first time since landing in France I am billeted on a French family, with whom are eight other fellows. The land- lady is kindness itself to us. She cannot be more than thirty, yet her hair is already grey, and if one of our guns (French or English) discharges a souvenir for the Huns close by, or if a German shell explodes near at hand when trying to hit our artillery, she gives a visible jump, poor soul. Yet these people will stick to their homes to the last. One man told us that, in order to escape the Germans, he lay on the roof for forty-eight hours without anything to eat and not daring to move. This morning while we were bathing a Taube came over us and dropped a bomb which made a hole six inches deep, but fortunately hurt no one. The Taube was driven off by a Frenchman

From Pte. E. SHINKFIELD We are getting very hot weather now and find it rather trying. On March 14th we left Pembroke Camp, where we had been under canvas, and did a fortnight's guard over the crew of the Emden, who are imprisoned the other side of the Grand Harbour. Malta has been nude a hospital base for those wounded in the Dardanelles, and they are arriving very fast indeed. We have been turned out of our barracks, which have been turned into quite a decent hospital, and are now camping out on the parade ground. About once a month the Maltese go stark, staring mad and have religious processions, which are nothing more nor less than a kind of carnival. IN order that the next number of the Magazine may be published in October all "copy" must be in the hands of the Editors (Mr. E. F. P. Carrick, Alleyn's School, and Mr. W. E. Powell, 116, Denmark Hill, S.E.) by Thursday, September 30th, 1915. THOSE boys who are leaving the School this Term are strongly recommended to join the Old Boys' Club, to which the sub- scription, including the Magazine (of which a copy is sent as issued to each member), is Is. per annum for the first two years after leaving School, and subsequently 2s. Qd. per annum. Full particulars can be obtained on application to the Hon. Secretary, Mr. W. E. Powell, 116, Denmark HiU, S.E. Bradbury, Agnew, & Co. Ld., Printers, London arid Tonbridge. The following boys at present hold such Scholarships :— Cufflin, R. D. Hall, W. G. Highfield, W. G.

In future three Entrance Scholarships, tenable in the first instance for three years, will usually be awarded each year to boys over twelve and under fourteen years of age on 3ist July, who have been educated elsewhere than at a Public Elementary School. Application should reach the Head Master before March ist. The Examination is con- ducted by the Joint Scholarships Board.

The following boys at present hold these Scholarships. Macara, K. G. F. Smith, S. W.

Three Foundation Scholarships are usually awarded each year to boys who have been at least one year in the School on the results of the Annual Examination of the School in July, conducted by the University of London.

The following boys at present hold these Scholarships which are tenable for one or more years, according to the age of the successful candidate :— Allen, R. H. Smith, C. L. Clarke, A. W. Snell, N. W. Clarke, E. J. Westbrook, R. P. Paterson, A. C. Dulwich College Scholarships.

HPHEi College Governors will give one Scholarship every year tenable at Dulwich College, for boys who are being and have been for not less than two years educated at Alleyn's School.

The award will be made on the result of the Annual Examination of the School in July. Candidates for this Scholarship must be under fourteen years of age on the 3ist of July, and must give in their names to the Head-master on or before the ist of July. All Candidates will be required to have done at least one year's Latin at Alleyn's School.

The value of the Scholarship is £24 per annum, and covers the tuition fees at the College. A further sum of not more than £5, to be found by the parents, will suffice to pay all extras. The Scholarship is tenable for four years, with possible extension for one or more years, in the case of very promising boys.

It is primarily meant for boys who wish to go to the University or into some profession which involves an education of a more classical nature than that given at Alleyn's School. There will not, however, be any rule binding a successful candidate to take up any particular branch of education or profession.

If a London County Council Junior Scholar gains this Scholarship he will have to give up his L.C.C. scholarship as the latter may not be held at the College.

The parents of the candidate to whom the Scholarship is awarded must at once apply to the School Secretary, Dulwich College for an admittance application form and prospectus, and must state that the boy is the holder of the Alleyn's School Scholarship.
