Before methods for transcribing and later for recording definitive versions existed, the oral tradition was used to pass on tales and deeds. And, as anyone familiar with ‘Chinese whispers’ will know, this process is not always accurate. Even when transcription methods had become available, the accuracy of the record can be questioned, as is the case in Sabine Bearing-Gould (1834-1924), an 18th century Anglican reverend, perhaps most famous for his earnest documentation of werewolves (Baring-Gould 1973), as well as many collections of English folk song, which were often unsurprisingly edited from the pious perspective of a religious man of the time, likely due to the collectors profession. Often, such songs are cautionary or moral tales, and thus the process of collecting and editing can change an oral history dramatically. This essay will consider how one such instance, the song Stagger Lee, reflects changing attitudes of the audience and the narrator towards violence and masculinity in its portrayal of an initially real-world, and later supernatural, violent protagonist. How, and why this paean to violence, with its fetishistic vision of extreme masculinity, has become something of a standard in the American folk canon. It considers both the retelling of Stagger Lee’s tale in song, and subsequent appropriation by cinema in depictions of race, sex, and violence as admirable or heroic qualities.

After discussing key concepts such as authenticity, space, time and place, and documentation, the author gives a preliminary definition of live al- bums, combining available descriptions and comparing them with different typolo- gies and functions of these recordings.     Kurt Cobain's Journals: Transcribed B Y : W H I T N E Y D A V I S "THE SUN IS GONE, BUT I HAVE A LIGHT." Kurt Cobain Project Goal Is it possible to track an individual's mental turn toward violent acts, such as suicide, through a corpora of their personal writings? This project proposes that, through computational linguistics and the application of textual markup language on an individual's corpus of personal writings, it may be possible to textually map a person's unwritten thoughts. Methodology Through the use of TEI text markup language (Textual Encoding Initiative), first transcribe the personal correspondence corpora of the subject. Next, create a list of "Red Flag" words to search for. Lastly, using the created list of search words, process the corpora through a textual analysis software for study. Subject Kurt Cobain, lead singer and guitarist of NIRVANA, lead a highly publicized life. Throughout his life, he amassed a large collection of personal writings contained within various journals. In 1994, Cobain committed suicide. After his death, a large corpora of his personal writings were published, making him an ideal individual for this study. Text Used "Journals" by Kurt Cobain was published by Riverhead Books in 2002. This book contains a collection of Cobain's personal writings and drawings spanning the whole of his career as a musician with NIRVANA. Though dates are largely not included, the collection is approximately organized chronologically. As a whole, the 286 pages included are nearly all handwritten by Cobain. Example Pg.     Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.
