This six-week course takes a closer look at the music that inspired these bands, their roots-based influences, and their output of inspired work that was created in the 1960’s. Topics include: The early days, 1960-62: London, Liverpool and Hamburg: Importing rhythm and blues and rockabilly from the States…real rock and roll bands—what a concept! Watch out, world! The heady days of 1963: Don’t look now, but these guys just might be more than great cover bands…and they are becoming very popular…Beatlemania takes off. We can write songs; 1964: the rock and roll band as a creative force. John and Paul, their yin and yang-like personal and musical differences fueling their creative tension, discover that two heads are better than one. The Stones, meanwhile, keep cranking out covers, and plot their conquest of America, one riff at a time. The middle periods, 1965-66: For the boys from Liverpool, waves of brilliant albums that will last forever—every cut a memorable, sing-along winner. While for the Londoners, an artistic breakthrough with their first all--original record. Mick and Keith’s tempestuous relationship pushes away band founder Brian Jones; the Stones are established as a force in the music world. Prisoners of their own success, 1967-68: How their popularity drove them to great heights—and lowered them to awful depths. It’s a long way from three chords and a cloud of dust. -

MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock. -

HITMAKERS – 6 x 60m drama LOGLINE In Sixties London, the managers of the Beatles, the Stones and the Who struggle to marry art and commerce in a bid to become the world’s biggest hitmakers. CHARACTERS Andrew Oldham (19), Beatles publicist and then manager of the Rolling Stones. A flash, mouthy trouble-maker desperate to emulate Brian Epstein’s success. His bid to create the anti-Beatles turns him from Epstein wannabe to out-of-control anarchist, corrupted by the Stones lifestyle and alienated from his girlfriend Sheila. For him, everything is a hustle – work, relationships, his own psyche – but always underpinned by a desire to surprise and entertain. Suffers from (initially undiagnosed) bi-polar disorder, which is exacerbated by increasing drug use, with every high followed by a self-destructive low. Nobody in the Sixties burns brighter: his is the legend that’s never been told on screen, the story at the heart of Hitmakers. Brian Epstein (28), the manager of the Beatles. A man striving to create with the Beatles the success he never achieved in entertainment himself (as either actor or fashion designer). Driven by a naive, egotistical sense of destiny, in the process he basically invents what we think of as the modern pop manager. He’s an emperor by the age of 30 – but this empire is constantly at risk of being undone by his desperate (and – to him – shameful) homosexual desires for inappropriate men, and the machinations of enemies jealous of his unprecedented, upstart success. At first he sees Andrew as a protege and confidant, but progressively as a threat. -

For situations that surround your career, clothing is an important part in portraying yourself. With so many options of what to wear, how do you even start building a wardrobe that can help you during your career? Start with the basics. A two-piece pant or skirt-suit is the most essential basic for all genders; men should also have a nice tie or bowtie on hand as well. The classic jacket and pants combo provides a set that can be tailored for almost every business occasion; if the situation is more casual, the jacket doesn’t have to be worn. To pair with the suit, a few solid color blouses or button- downs should be added to provide more options. A pair of khakis or trousers can be added to provide even more versatility. A nice pair of stylish and comfortable dress shoes should be added to the mix. What makes these basic pieces essential is their ability to be worn in almost every occasion. It is important to buy basic pieces with great quality, fit, and color. The basics should be thought of as an investment; and remember, quality ensures that the pieces will last a long time and can be relied on. The fit should be appropriate; too tight and it can look unprofessional, but too big could look sloppy. Colors should be neutral. Blacks, navy blues, and greys are always good to have around because they can be paired with almost anything. -

More specifically, I examine how and why often marginalized southern vernacular musicians, especially Mississippi blues singer Robert Johnson, were celebrated during the folk revivals of the 1930s and 1960s as possessing something inherently American, and differentiate these periods of intense interest in the traditional music of the American South from the most recent example of revivalism early in the new millennium. He was also a serious jazz enthusiast and collector. Tolley has graciously bequeathed his entire collection of jazz records to Carleton University for faculty and students to appreciate and enjoy. The recordings represent 75 years of collecting, spanning the earliest jazz recordings to albums released in the 1970s. Born in Birmingham, England in 1927, his love for jazz began at the age of fourteen and from the age of seventeen he was publishing in many leading periodicals on the subject, such as Discography, Pickup, Jazz Monthly, The IAJRC Journal and Canada’s popular jazz magazine Coda. As well as having written various books on British poetry, he has also written two books on jazz: Discographical Essays (2009) and Codas: To a Life with Jazz (2013). Tolley was also president of the Montreal Vintage Music Society which also included Jacques Emond, whose vinyl collection is also housed in the Audio-Visual Resource Centre.
