PRESS INFORMATION WINTER 2020 | 2021 STANTONAMARLBERG.COM → ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ . ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ It all started in 1880 at St. Anton am Arlberg. A Norwegian engineer strapped two planks of wood to his feet and „slid“ to work at the Arlberg Tunnel. At that time this little village at 1,300 metres above sea level was light years away from the world famous ski resort it has now become. Back then, the isolated mountain farming folk struggled under incredibly harsh conditions. Photo: Hannes Schneider and his ski tracks – Picture from the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg. Copyright: TVB St. Anton am Arlberg Times changed rapidly, though, in St. Anton am Arlberg. All of a sudden it wasn’t only Nordic guests conquering the pistes with their telemark turns – the locals were too. The Beginning – Founding of Ski-Club Arlberg The story began on the 3rd January 1901.Six friends walked from St. Anton am Arlberg to St. Christoph and were welcomed on their arrival by the innkeeper, Oswald Trojer and his daughter, Liesl. This meeting started with companionable drinks and ended with the foundation of Ski-Club Arlberg. Today, the Ski-Club can boast of over 9,000 members from 61 different countries. Only three years after founding the club, they realised their next vision by hosting the 1st „General Ski Race“. The great racing tradition of today can trace its` roots back to this first competition in 1904. First ski school worldwide This was just the beginning, however, for the dynamic St. Antoner’s with their Ski Club and spectacular races. A local man, Hannes Schneider, was responsible for creating a landmark in ski history, by “inventing” the first ski school ever in the winter of 1921/1922.

  • The Cradle of Alpine Skiing - Milestones in the History of Skiing on the Arlberg
PRESS RELEASE The cradle of Alpine skiing - Milestones in the history of skiing on the Arlberg Lech Zürs am Arlberg, 29. October 2020. The cradle of Alpine skiing is located in the heart of a vast mountainous area between Tyrol and Vorarlberg. This region of Austria, one of the snowiest in the Alps, inspired daring young ski pioneers at the beginning of the 20th century. Their inventiveness and ingenuity both shaped and influenced the sport of alpine skiing. With 88 lifts and cable cars, 305 km of ski runs and 200 km of high-Alpine powder snow runs, Lech Zürs is today part of the largest and most extensive ski area in Austria. Moreover, "Ski Arlberg" is one of the world’s 5 largest ski regions. What separates this area from others is the unrivalled passion for skiing, which has shaped the development of Lech Zürs for more than 100 years. More than any other winter sports destination, the Arlberg defines ski culture and ingenuity. Where history is made... The Arlberg's legendary status is rooted in its storied history, geography, and extensive cable car infrastructure. No one better embodies this local pioneering spirit better than Hannes Schneider. Born in Stuben am Arlberg, he founded Austria's first ski school in St. Anton in 1921, thereby revolutionising skiing with his ‘stem christie’ technique. The first surface lift in Austria was built in Zürs in 1937 to suit the growing number of young amateur sports enthusiasts. In the same year, the Galzigbahn became the first cable car on the Arlberg designed specifically for winter tourism.

  • The Adaptation of European Alpine Tourism to Climate Change
Jonathan Strömberg The adaptation of European Alpine tourism to climate change Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Bachelor of Business Administration European Business Administration Bachelor’s thesis May 3rd 2017 Abstract Author(s) Jonathan Strömberg Title The adaptation of European Alpine tourism to climate change Number of Pages 55 pages Date 3 May 2017 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme European Business Administration Instructor(s) Marko Korkeakoski, First supervisor Michael Keaney, Second supervisor The changing environment poses challenges for the tourism industry in the Alps. Especial- ly winter sports tourism is under threat due to the expected declination of snow conditions. The present thesis examines relevant literature to form an understanding of expected fu- ture climatic conditions, how the conditions effect the Alpine environment and thus the op- erating environment for Alpine tourism, and of the adaptation measures suggested by the literature. Using the Austrian state of Vorarlberg as an example region, the thesis esti- mates and highlights the potential effects of the implementation of a sustainable and a non-sustainable set of adaptation strategies by the relevant tourism actors. It can be esti- mated that the implementation of technological adaptation strategies to support the viability of ski areas should only be considered in regions that are snow-reliable currently and in the future to avoid misplaced investments. The climatic conditions of the summer season will improve in the Alps and the region should focus on touristic offers that are sustainable in the long term and that can benefit from the existing infrastructure in the region. Adapta- tion measures can be estimated to be the most viable when based on the existing strengths of a region.
