RESUMO Nessa dissertação, analisa-se como os escritos de Robert Southey sobre Portugal e seus domínios Imperiais emergiram enredados em uma compreensão metanarrativa do processo histórico que expressa de forma ambivalente tanto a possibilidade de rejeição quanto do resgate da dimensão formativa do passado e recuperação da sua relativa autonomia estética. Explora-se como os relatos de viagem de Southey sobre Portugal, suas correspondências privadas, seu projeto de escrita de uma história erudita e filosófica desta nação, a reedição dos romances de cavalarias ibéricos, os artigos publicados em periódicos sobre história contemporânea e a História do Brasil estavam imersos nesta compreensão ambivalente do processo histórico. Analisam-se como os conceitos, linguagens e narrativas em vigor nestes textos circularam em obras de letrados britânicos e luso-brasileiros contemporâneos a Southey. Dessa forma, explora-se tanto como Southey interagiu com o campo discursivo estabelecido nas macronarrativas ilustradas europeias do século XVIII em vigor em obras de letrados britânicos e luso-brasileiros, quanto como a performance dos seus textos respondiam aos debates político-historiográficos contemporâneos em vigor na Europa e na América. Com efeito, analisa-se como Southey se valeu da circulação transatlântica de textos com o objetivo de instruir e entreter os leitores com suas obras, o que demandou do letrado o equilíbrio entre o juízo filosófico com a assimilação empática do outro no tempo/ espaço. Abstract In this dissertation, I analyze how the writings of Robert Southey about Portugal and its Imperial domains emerged entangled in a metanarrative understanding of the historical process that expresses in an ambivalent fashion both the possibility of rejection and recovery of the formative dimension of the past and its relative aesthetic autonomy. It explores how the travel writings of Southey about Portugal, his private correspondences, his project of the written erudite and philosophical history of this nation, the re-edition of the chivalry romances, the articles published in periodicals about contemporary history and the History of Brazil emerged immersed in this ambivalent understanding of the historical process. I analyze how the concepts, languages and narratives existing in these texts circulated in works of British and luso-brazilian contemporaries of Southey. Thus, I explore both how Souythey interacted with the discursive field established in the enlightened european macronarratives of the eighteenth century existing in works of british and luso-brazilian men of letters, and how the performances of his texts answered the political and historiographical contemporary debates existing in Europe and America. Furthermore, I analyze how Southey availed himself from the transatlantic circulation of texts with the aim of instructing and entertaining the readers with his works, which demanded a balance between the philosophical judgement with the empathical assimilation of the other in time/ space. I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia.

    ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: MUSIC OF THE NEW LUSITANIA: THE IMPACT OF HUMANIST THOUGHT ON POLYPHONY IN SIXTEENTH-CENTURY PORTUGAL Victor Amaro Vicente, Master of Arts, 2006 Thesis Directed By: Professor Richard Wexler School of Music, University of Maryland Cosmopolitan, politically influential, and wealthy, Portugal experienced its “Golden Age” in the sixteenth century. Though science and the arts reached their apogee during this era, polyphonic music in Portugal does not seem to have flourished to any great extent before the seventeenth century. The few extant examples of secular court polyphony, in particular, demonstrate a predominantly homorhythmic style possibly cultivated by amateur composers. This aesthetic favoring simpler musical textures likely developed from the humanist notion that music must serve the text. Italian humanism, in fact, had a profound impact on Renaissance Portugal, which claimed its ancient Roman name, Lusitania. In literature and art the influence is quite apparent, but the case for music requires a more detailed study that is sensitive to broader social factors. This study argues that the composition and performance of Renaissance Portuguese court music is best understood within the context of the Counter-Reformation and Christian humanism. CIL II 115: OBSERVATIONS ON THE ONLY SEVIR IUNIOR IN ROMAN SPAIN aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 102 (1994) 226–236 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 226 CIL II 115: OBSERVATIONS ON THE ONLY SEVIR IUNIOR IN ROMAN SPAIN Spurious inscriptions are an interesting aspect of epigraphical studies, as has been testified by those who have considered the falsae et alienae sections of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum.1 Commenting on the list of fraudulent inscriptions in the CIL, Arthur E.Gordon emphasized that part of the interest in these false inscriptions lies in the possibility that "... at any time someone may challenge the list, by arguing either for the deletion of an item from the list or for the addition of an item ..."2 One inscription which may fit into this category is CIL II 115 ( = ILER 5673). It is particularly intriguing because, despite its long-term listing as a false inscription, recent books have included it in their texts without making reference to its spurious status.3 Because some appear to have accepted the inscription, without discussing why, an inquiry may be in order to consider possible reasons why its history as an invalid inscription could apparently be disregarded. Long regarded as false, the inscription purports to record the career of a Roman soldier named C. Antonius Flavinus of the legion II Augusta from Ebora Liberalitas (modern Évora in Portugal). Azevedo Excerpt More information Introduction This book grew out of an overview of Portuguese designed for undergraduate seniors and graduates with varying levels of familiarity with the language and little or no training in grammar or linguistics. Some of these students were native or semi-native speakers, while others had learned the language through formal study rather than residence in a Portuguese-speaking country. As a group, they were typical of students interested in studying language as a means of commu- nication and literary expression rather than an end in itself, and curious to learn something about the structure and use of Portuguese without going too deep into its formal analysis under any one of the linguistic theories available. Pre- senting the language to those students in a systematic but interesting way turned out to be a challenging and rewarding experience. Patterned on that course, this book has been organized around several key topics seen from a linguistic view- point rather different from the prescriptive approach usually found in grammar manuals. Owing to its general character, Portuguese: A Linguistic Introduction introduces only a handful of the language’s main aspects, leaving out several otherwise important topics and a number of details that should be taken up at a more advanced level. This book is divided into eight chapters, the first of which, “Portuguese in the world,” surveys the external history of the language, that is the facts surrounding its development and spread beyond its original territory. The next three chapters deal with select topics of its phonology or sound system (Chapter 2, “Sounds”), its morphology or the internal organization of words (Chapter 3, “Words”), and its syntax or sentence structure (Chapter 4, “Sentences”).

Involved were people from across the globe and across the socioeconomic and political spectrums – Chinese Communists and Portuguese right-wing dictators, American black nationalists in the urban North and South African white supremacists, cold warriors and human rights activists. The Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), was the only national liberation movement in the 1960s to receive aid from the United States, the Soviet Union, and the People‘s Republic of China. I contend that, because both FRELIMO and Portugal relied on support from the international community to wage war for over a decade (1964-1975), the anti-colonial wars in lusophone Africa were not only armed struggles, but also cultural and rhetorical battles. FRELIMO‘s program of socialist revolution which heralded human rights and social justice through education, non- racialism and gender equality resonated with the international shift to the left of the 1960s. Counterpoised were the Portuguese right-wing corporative dictatorship which espoused a ―Lusotropical‖ civilizing mission for its African overseas provinces, and the white supremacist regimes of Southern Rhodesia and South Africa that militarily and economically dominated Southern Africa.

Instead, they are largely about markets and about the multiple positionings of social actors within markets that are structured by ideologies of the nation state, immigration and the globalized new economy. This critical perspective challenges the normalized view that immigrant (diasporic) communities are simply natural social groupings or depoliticized transplantations of distinct ethnolinguistic units from their ―homeland‖. They are, like language and identity, carefully constructed and managed social projects that are shaped by forces from within and from without. In Canada, the conditions for the institutionalization and (re)production of ethnolinguistic differences, which also make and mark class relations, are strengthened by the state‘s multiculturalist policy. The Portuguese-Canadian community is one such ethnolinguistic market and the goal of this research is to examine which forms of portugueseness dominate the market, why and with what consequences for whom. Building from an ethnographic and critical sociolinguistic approach (Bourdieu 1977, Heller 2002), the qualitative data behind this research ii was produced through a two-year ethnography, participant observations and semi-structured interviews drawing primarily from six second-generation Portuguese-Canadians and members of their social networks.

MENDES CORR~A Professor of Anthropology, Faculty of Science, Oporto University I Geographically speaking, Portugal is only a portion of the great Iberian peninsular unit, without precise ethnic or geographical bound- aries. But the development of its people, and eventually their political independence, with consequently increased isolation, have favored the individualization of this ethnic aggregate in customs, language, and national feeling; moreover, nine centuries of history furnish the Portuguese nation with a firm traditional basis. There are, however, as will here be shown, also archeological and anthro- pological reasons for Portuguese unity. To outline these we must go back to epochs in which naturally no trace existed as yet in the region in question of any national solidarity. Regrettably our knowledge of the pre-historic and proto-historic times of Portugal is still full of gaps and obscurities. If, notwith- standing this and what has recently been written on the subject we cannot see the roots of the Portuguese nation in the sedentary epi- Paleolithic fishermen of Mugem, we may safely nevertheless recognize as our ancestors some of the Neolithic tribes who constructed the dolmens and the first castros, who inhabited the caverns, and who with rudimentary artistic feeling tried to represent their deities on curious plaques. These precursors of the historic Portuguese became in the course of time admixed with migrants of various origins, and the first trace of national individuality may perhaps be seen in the similar- ity of some of their industries in the proto-historic times.

    Vidyasagar University Journal of History, Volume V, 2016-2017, Pages: 9-20 ISSN 2321-0834 Os Lusiads – The Portuguese Epic of Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India Karubaki Datta Arms are my theme, and those matchless heroes Who from Portugal’s far western shores By oceans where none had ventured Voyaged to Taprobana and beyond, Enduring hazards and assaults Such as drew on more than human prowess Among far distant peoples, to proclaim A New Age and win undying fame;1 These are the opening lines of the Portuguese epic Os Lusiadas or The Lusiads by Luis de Cameos that was first published in 1572 . It is regarded as the national epic of Portugal and is often compared with Odyssey of Homer . Virgil of Aenid and Argonautica of Apollonius.2 It is written in form of a narration – the narrator is Vasco da Gama himself. The epic is a description of the sea voyage that brought Vasco da Gama to Calicut in the Malabar coast of India in 1497, the main story being the journey from Sofala to Calicut and back. The particular voyage of Vasco to India was actually the culmination of a series of discoveries along the coast of Africa that had taken place over the century preceding 1497. The history of the previous discoveries are also narrated in the epic. The epic is titled Os Lusiads because even though Vasco de Gama is the main figure of the epic, the collective hero is the people of Portrugal - the ‘sons of Lusus’ – who have been able to achieve this great feat.
