As a pilgrimage site that now attracts an estimated six million visitors each year from a diverse range of geographical, social, and religious departure points, the motivations inspiring pilgrims to visit Lourdes can be elusive and disparate. From volunteer caregivers striving to “be as Christ” through their assistance to sick pilgrims, to first-time visitors to Lourdes navigating the shrine through the camera lens of a Hollywood film, this study moves through a wide range of pilgrim experiences. While such experiences underscore the inherently multivalent nature of pilgrimage, I show how the trope of authenticity emerges as a rhetorical device that recurs frequently in the narratives and discourse of pilgrims who undertake the journey to Lourdes. Experiences described by pilgrims as “authentic” are critical in informing their engagement with the geography of the shrine and with fellow pilgrims, and often inspire return visits to Lourdes in subsequent years. In dialogue with studies on pilgrimage and other forms of travel, I argue that despite its conceptual baggage authenticity still matters, and offers a useful heuristic lens for exploring those factors which shape and determine the experience of pilgrims to Lourdes. I suggest that from the perspective of pilgrims, Lourdes is a “thin space” where heaven touched earth and which affords the authentic possibility of transcendence, of collapsing the boundaries between self and other, human and divine. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Ellen Badone, whose guidance, expertise, and encouragement throughout my fieldwork and during the writing of this dissertation proved invaluable. Le Cachot. 310 vi Ph.D. Thesis – Michael Agnew McMaster – Religious Studies I Introduction: “Come Here in Procession” “Go, tell the priests to have people come here in procession and to build a chapel here.” -Message of Our Lady to Bernadette, March 2, 18581 On an unusually grey and cold July morning I am pulling my heavy suitcase at a brisk pace as I make my way toward St. Pancras International, a recently redeveloped rail station in central London that serves as the British terminus for the Eurostar line, connecting the island to continental Europe. With my yellow train voucher from Tangney Tours in hand, I am about to set out on a pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Lourdes in southwestern France with the annual pilgrimage of the Archdiocese of Westminster. After obtaining my tickets from the train manager for Tangney Tours (a pilgrimage tour operator based in Kent), I pass through security and border control before searching for the familiar faces of pilgrims I had met in the weeks leading up to the pilgrimage. I soon find Fr. Colin, a parish priest from west London, and some of his parishioners who are also making the trek to Lourdes. As we wait for our 8:20am departure to Paris we excitedly chat about our expectations for the week, and those pilgrims with several years and even decades of experience travelling to Lourdes share their tips and insights with me. Eventually our conversation is interrupted by the boarding call, and we begin our ascent up the 1 Sanctuary of Lourdes – Official Guide (Lourdes, France: NDL Editions, 2010), 16. 1 Ph.D. Thesis – Michael Agnew McMaster – Religious Studies escalators to the train platform. After assisting with the luggage of elderly pilgrims unable to lift their suitcases up and into the overhead compartments, I eventually find my assigned seat at a small plastic and metal table for four and settle in for the journey, looking forward to seeing the countryside of southeast England as the high-speed train whisks by on its way to the Channel Tunnel. I am soon joined by my three seatmates for the journey from London to Paris: Eleanor and Philippa, a mother and daughter from outside the diocese but who prefer to come with this particular pilgrimage, and Stephen, a man in his early thirties considering a vocation to the priesthood. Since I am meeting them for the first time on the train journey, they quickly spot my unusual accent and make a sort of game out of guessing its origin. Eleanor and Stephen determine that I am American, while Philippa concludes that I am Irish, or perhaps more specifically from Northern Ireland. When I reveal that I am a graduate student from Canada doing a research project on the experience of pilgrims to Lourdes, all appear genuinely interested in my fieldwork, Eleanor and Philippa readily offering to be interviewed before I have even asked. Stephen however asks the question I have long anticipated with some apprehension before commencing my fieldwork: “So, if you’re coming on the pilgrimage and doing research, does that mean you’re a Catholic then?”2 I nervously begin to struggle through my answer, unsure of how it will be received, as I explain that while I was raised as a Catholic and had attended 2 Field notes, July 22, 2012. 2 Ph.D. Thesis – Michael Agnew McMaster – Religious Studies Catholic elementary and secondary schools, I no longer practice. Having been quite devout up until the age of 20, and still deeply familiar with the rites and rhythms of the Catholic faith, I could perhaps have taken an easier route, and provided a more ambiguous answer, something like “I was raised Catholic.” That option would have left pilgrims to make their own assumptions. Yet as I set out to engage in participant-observation research grounded in open-ended interviews with pilgrims, I thought it was vitally important to be as open, approachable, and straightforward as possible. After all, I hoped for the same openness from pilgrims as they recounted their stories.

I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year of 2008 which marks the 150th anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Carmelite friar Fr. Tony Lester, O.Carm. preaching at the Grotto in Lourdes. But before I can tell you why I think there’s a strong link between the message of Lourdes and Carmelite spirituality, there’s something I feel I have to say first: I am not a big fan of apparitions generally. There, I feel better for writing that! Let me explain… When I was a teenager (all of a decade ago), I used to be very attracted by the extraordinary (even spooky) parts of our Catholic faith. Visions, weeping statues, saints who could reveal your past and your future, stigmata, Eucharistic miracles and so on – I was fascinated by it all. And when I first came to Lourdes aged thirteen I discovered all sorts of out-of-the-ordinary things to excite me: a vision story, miraculous healings, ‘holy’ water, and enough glow-in-the-dark crucifixes and tacky religious art to fill the town’s three basilicas and numerous chapels. There’s nothing wrong with piety, of course, but it needs to be balanced and sensible.

    Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and regional expertise, it offers in-depth investigation of the gendered dimensions of Muslim pilgrimage and the life-worlds of female pilgrims. Elisha cured a Syrian army commander of his APPEAL leprosy even though he was an enemy of the Israelites. Both the army Kick-Off Weekend commander and the widow put their faith in the Israelite prophets. The citizens of Nazareth are so angry at Jesus for saying this that February 2-3 they tried to throw him over the cliff outside their town, “But Jesus Father Joe will be speaking passed through the midst of them and went away.” (Luke 4:21-30) at all Masses. PSA funds many important Jesus brought healing and forgiveness to all he encountered, Diocese ministries, such as Israelites as well as Gentiles.

    Emilie Garrigou-Kempton Writing Lourdes Faith, Miracles, and the Elaboration of an Official Story Late nineteenth-century France is a place of renewed religious fervor, particularly around the miraculous healings at Lourdes, where sick masses converge in hope of being healed of a wide range of ailments. The same period is also known for its belief in medical and scientific progress, leading to the production of com- peting narratives about faith, and the question of its role in the healing process becomes a concern in both medical discourse and Catholic literature. Lourdes itself crystallizes these questions and texts written by doctors, clerics, historians, journalists, and novelists illustrate a wide range of opinions about miracles and participate in the production of an ever-growing authoritative list of texts about the events at Lourdes. An analysis of famed neurologist Charcot’s The Healing Faith (1892) in conjunction with Lasserre’s Notre-Dame de Lourdes (1868) and Père Cros’s Histoire de Notre-Dame de Lourdes (1925) explores the role of faith in these narratives, along with the tensions and convergences between them. 1. Healing in Lourdes France, in the second half of the nineteenth century is a place of renewed reli- gious fervor, prompted, at least in part, by the multiplication of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, most famously in the small Pyrenean town of Lourdes. There, in 1858, a young and sickly shepherdess named Bernadette Soubirous reported seeing the Virgin Mary appear before her eyes. As a spring erupted at the site of the apparition and as her early followers reported being cured of a range of physical ailments, Lourdes’s reputation soon went far beyond the Pyrenees and, by 1873, an annual national pilgrimage was established by the Assumptionists bringing in thousands of miracle-seekers by train and making Lourdes one of the most popular sites of Catholic pilgrimage in the world to date.

    Our Lady of Lourdes SAINT OF THE DAY 11-02-2021 On February 11, 1858, at the Massabielle cave in Lourdes, the Blessed Virgin appeared to the 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous, an illiterate peasant, poor and sickly, who on that day had gone to collect wood along the gravel bank of the Gave de Pau. It was the first of a series of eighteen Marian apparitions, which would end on July 16th. They contained a strong call to conversion, anticipating the Mariophany to the three little shepherds of Fatima. "I saw a lady dressed in white. She wore a white dress, a white veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot": so Bernadette described her first vision. Seeing the lady make the sign of the cross, the astonished girl recited the rosary. The Virgin, who still hadn't revealed her identity, then made a beckoning sign but Bernadette dared not come closer and saw her vanish. Overcoming her parents' initial disapproval, the girl returned to the cave three days later and threw holy water towards the vision: the lady smiled and bowed her head. On the third apparition, the lady spoke for the first time: "I do not promise to make you happy in this world, but in the next". And she added: "Do you want the grace to be able to come here for fifteen days?" Meanwhile, the news of the apparitions spread and the number of people who accompanied Bernadette to the cave increased. On February 21st the girl was questioned harshly by Commissioner Jacomet, to whom she replied that she had seen Aqueró, "That one there." On the eighth apparition, the lady entrusted her with a crucial message: "Penance! Penance! Penance! Pray to God for sinners! Go and kiss the earth in penance for sinners".
