An Andalusian and Lusitano Extravaganza The Pacific Association of the Andalusian & Lusitano Horse (PAALH) is pleased to present the 2019 Canadian National Andalusian Show and Fiesta of the Royal Horse! This multi-faceted equine celebration is dedicated to the amazing Iberian of Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, as well as the talented and the diverse cadre of riders, trainers and exhibitors who help them to excel in so many ways. A special year, 2019 marks our 15th annual Canadian National Show and a return to beautiful Chilliwack, British Columbia. What makes this Show special? It’s the horses of course; but it is also so much more. Foremost, it is a breed featuring beautiful and talented Andalusian horses of Spanish (Pura Raza Espanola - PRE) and Portuguese (Puro Sangue Lusitano - PSL) origin, both purebred and partbred, competing in conformation and performance classes over three days. Beyond that it is an opportunity to showcase the incredible traditional and contemporary equitation skills that these horses and their human partners excel at, such as Doma Vaquera and Garrocha, Working Equitation and Dressage, English and Western, Hack and Freestyle.

Our highest priority for this show is to have fun, compete in the spirit of excellence and enjoyment, and bear witness to all that these capable and gorgeous horses and their dedicated handlers and companions can do. There are classes for all; from National Championship halter and performance classes, to walk/trot hack classes for those with young horses showing for the first time, or more specialized and demanding equitation challenges for higher-level participants. We offer a comprehensive roster of both English and Western performance flat classes, two days of WE Can B-rated Working Equitation competition, fun and engaging specialty Iberian classes and a whole day dedicated to dressage – both English and Western. We also offer an interesting lineup of All-Breed classes for any horse owner to enjoy and full day Working Equitation Clinic on Sunday for those who want to get involved in this growing sport or want to improve the equitation abilities of themselves and their equine partners. So – have a good look at this Show Premium and decide if there is something you would like to try out for the first time, hone your skillset in or if you simply want to have fun competing in the spirit of excellence with others who love horses and anything equine and Iberian.

Halter and Performance Classes The primary focus of our Canadian National Andalusian Show over the years has been the Spanish and Portuguese halter classes and the more traditional equitation disciplines found at many equine Breed shows. All of the halter, in-hand, performance, specialty and functionality offerings, including Western and English flat and hack classes and the Spanish specialty classes are scheduled for Friday and Saturday with two special classes happening during the Fiesta on Saturday evening. More specifically, halter and in-hand classes are generally concentrated in the morning schedule with the performance classes largely taking over after lunch. We have also introduced a selection of all-breed classes within the schedule to encourage participation from outside the Andalusian and Lusitano breeds. These classes can be entered on an individual per class fee basis or you can enter as many classes as you and your horse can handle under a flat rate arrangement as per the fee schedule.

Working Equitation Show Working Equitation (WE) originally developed as a demonstration of traditional equestrian skills related to livestock, rangeland and ranching culture but it has evolved to include a wider envelope of working horse traditions. In recent years WE has been attracting a lot of attention in the North American horse world as a fun, competitive and entertaining equestrian pursuit in its own right. Recognizing this trend, we began to integrate WE into our show 8 years ago, first as a demonstration at the Fiesta, then as open classes in the day schedule. Since that time Working Equitation has really taken off and there are many people discovering this great sport. In recognition of this evolution, this year we are hosting a WECan Sanctioned B-rated Working Equitation Show as part of our 2019 National Andalusian Show. Three distinct phases of Working Equitation will run concurrently with the main show on Friday and Saturday, with the Dressage phase on Friday morning, Ease of Handling phase on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and the exciting Speed phase happening on Saturday afternoon. The dressage phase is a riding test on the flat, where emphasis is on obedience, transitions, collection and harmony. The Ease of Handling is a course of obstacles judged on fluidity, obedience, efficiency and style. The Speed phase is a race through the obstacles, faults in execution result in time penalties, fastest time wins. All together WE represents a beautiful expression of the exquisite partnership that can be developed between a horse and rider. Amy Star will be our course designer and judge for this competition.

Working Equitation Clinic with Amy Star A great place to hone Working Equitation skills for horse and rider, the Sunday Working Equitation Clinic is hosted by long-time Working Equitation enthusiast, clinician and judge Amy Star. Amy manages one and two-day clinics all over the North America and she welcomes riders of all ages and abilities and horses of all breeds to give this fun and challenging sport a try. It is not necessary to have any experience in working equitation, and all skills levels are welcome. Small semi-private group lessons of three will cater to troubleshooting, competition strategies and training. In addition to having fun on the course, you will learn about the history of the sport, how to compete in each of the phases, what the judge is looking for and how to help your horse excel in this exciting sport. A real bargain, this clinic costs only $100 for the day but we have limited space available so book now.

Dressage Day As in previous years, PAALH will once again be hosting a full day of Western and Classic Dressage in the Main arena on Sunday July 7th. This year will be a little different, however, as we evolve our Dressage Day into a more typical open show format with a full slate of Western Dressage, Walk/Trot and Traditional Dressage covering levels from Training Level to Fourth in Amateur, Youth and Open Divisions as well as Test of Choice rides, Championship classes and FEI TOC options. Alastair Buchanan will be our judge for the day and this will be an HCBC sanctioned Show. 2019 Equine Canada Dressage tests will be used and they can be found at: https://www.equestrian.ca/sport/dressage/tests while the Western Dressage tests can be found at the following link: https://westerndressageassociation.org/wdaa-tests/ General rules and other important information for this HCBC sanctioned Dressage Day can be found at: https://www.hcbc.ca/index.php/competitions/competition-documents Dressage tests cost $40 each except for the FEI tests which are $55. Please book early as we anticipate our schedule will fill up quickly.
