ADI’s recipe for success is hard work; good factual research into the scientific, economic and legal issues; relentless determination, and imagination to take a different approach when it is needed. For example, through the Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research, we fund advanced non- animal research methods to replace animal use. We cover many issues related to animals in captivity as well as animals in the wild, and the environment. With Animal Defenders International, we work internationally on issues, as well as captive animals used by industry. Our work with the National Anti-Vivisection Society and the Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research allows us to specialise in studies of the use of animals in scientific and medical research, as well as provision of advanced alternative methods. Our work exposes horrific suffering inside laboratories, but we also provide scientific critiques of animal experiments and argue for adoption of advanced scientific replacement methods. We engage with the public, media, governments and regulators to bring about change. In March 2013, following decades of campaigning, the EU Directive ending cosmetics testing on animals completed the final phase. We worked with the European Commission to ensure the ban was not derailed and extended – not only does the European ban end for cosmetics Animal tested cosmetics banned in Europe, now we produced in Europe, but the sales of imported cosmetics tested on animals. are working towards a ban in the US. The initial driver for the campaign had been public outrage at cruelty in the name of vanity, but it was establishing humane replacement techniques that not only saw the EU end these tests – once performed on 30,000 animals per year – but also offers the hope for animals across the globe. The prohibition of the sale of animal tested cosmetics in the huge EU marketplace now puts serious pressure on other countries. We alerted members of the US Congress that they must act or see the European market closed to US companies. In March 2014, a Bill was introduced to the US Congress to ban cosmetics testing on animals – we will be working hard to secure this. This long-term work saves hundreds of thousands of animals every year and forces industry and governments to develop advanced, non-animal methods for testing products. In 2013, we remained at the heart of major initiatives to end animal experiments; for example we’re working for implementation of provisions in the EU Directive that could allow public review and EXPOSED! Iranian and Russian space experiments on monkeys and other animals. evaluation of specific animal tests (called ‘thematic review’), which could result in some animal testing being replaced, and others simply discarded. We’re also participating in the Home Office workshops and negotiations on ending the secrecy that surrounds animal experiments, providing input to the EU Expert Working Group on the severity of animal experiments, and pushing for the early implementation of the ban on the use of F1 primates (monkeys born of wild-caught parents) in EU laboratories (this is important because laboratory monkey suppliers abroad regularly replenish their stocks of monkeys by taking from the wild, to supplement their failed breeding programmes; the babies are sold as ‘captive bred’).

Campaigns Kick Animal Testing out of the House!

2013 saw the final phase of the EU Directive phasing out cosmetics testing on animals and prohibiting the marketing of animal tested cosmetics in Europe. Now legislation has been tabled to do the same in the US – see page 4. Despite the milestone on cosmetics testing, the British

Rabbit in a laboratory cage. Government’s promised ban on household product testing has stalled – disappointing since in 1998 it was the British Government that pre-empted the EU ban on cosmetics testing by a decade by stating it would no longer award licences for experiments to test cosmetics. We will continue to work for the worldwide end of cosmetic and household product testing.

Research Without Animals MEG scanning above can be combined with MRI scanning to gain a temporal and spatial understanding of the human brain. We saw that the complete test replacement strategy was critical in finally delivering the end of cosmetics testing throughout Europe. This offers the greatest hope for animals all over the world. Through the Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research, we aim to continue to show the viable replacements to animal testing and press regulators to ensure these are implemented. The legislation drove the development and validation of the humane cosmetics tests in Europe. Since its inception, the LDF has awarded grants totalling over £3 million for a range of projects including cancer and kidney research, education, Parkinson’s disease and brain research. One of our most exciting projects has been developing the neuro-imaging techniques enabling the non-invasive study of human patients instead of brutal research on monkeys and other animals. Since our pioneering early support, fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) has been established as the “mainstay of neuroimaging in cognitive neuroscience”. In 1992 there were just four publications relating to fMRI; by 2007 there were, on average, eight papers being published Scan of a human brain. every day! Our support of and promotion of research without animals is changing the way research is carried out and advanced scientific techniques are the real cutting edge of science.

ADI lNAVS lLDF The development and promotion of humane, effective, human- based research techniques have proved vital to medical progress, and to ending outdated animal experiments. Campaigns Stop Circus Suffering

Our global ‘Stop Circus Suffering’ campaign secured more victories in 2013; the campaign has secured legislation to protect animals in multiple countries. Colombia took the total to five countries in South America that have banned animal circuses since we launched our campaign; El Salvador and Panama joined Costa Rica in Central America; and, in Europe, Croatia joined the list; over 25 countries have stopped the suffering. Stop Circus Suffering takes a multi-faceted, evidence based approach. Our undercover Colombia campaigners and supporting members of investigations generate the evidence that has swung popular opinion against circus cruelty in Congress on voting day. Europe, Asia, South America and the US. However we also research the science, review social and economic data and analyse potential impacts on local employment. No stone is unturned in looking for evidence, so legislators can feel confident that we provide all of the data they need to make an informed decision. They also know that ADI will assist in enforcing these laws – as we did so dramatically in Bolivia (see p12). We produce locally targeted multi-lingual materials with Czech, German and French versions joining the Stop Circus Suffering languages in 2013 which already boasted Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, and Norwegian. It often takes multiple attempts to secure legislation, even when there is widespread Billboard in the US. support! We are not deterred. We get results because we persevere, for as long as it takes. When members of the Colombian Congress arrived to vote on the day the ban was passed, they walked through an exhibition of ADI photographs from inside Colombian circuses and under a banner saying “Circuses without animals” . In the previous months we released more undercover footage from Colombian circuses released, our ADI team toured the entire country drumming up support, and we helped promote an animal-free circus in Bogota. With overwhelming evidence of abuse in British circuses and enormous public opposition, Britain finally has draft legislation to end this suffering. But after years of promises it is still not passed, and with an election looming next year, time is ticking. That is the challenge for 2014, can the UK finally catch up with all those countries that have left it so far behind. Since 2005, the My Mate’s A Primate campaign has highlighted the exploitation of primates – in entertainment, the pet trade, for bushmeat and for experiments. Through our investigations, research and resources, we have shown how our closest relatives in the animal kingdom are treated. We founded International Primate Day, September 1 st , to provide a global focus for threats to primates. In 2013 ADI revealed the exploitation of chimpanzees at Schwaben Park in Germany. Our field

We continue to work on ensuring the measures for primates under the EU Directive on animal experiments, which were secured by ADI/NAVS, are implemented effectively; we support primate protection legislation around the world. The UK Government ignored scientific evidence and public and parliamentary opposition and pressed ahead with an unjustified of wild badgers. Thousands marched on Badgers under fire: ADI oppose cull in England. Parliament and a petition instigated by Brian May secured 303,775 signatures. A Parliamentary Backbench debate amongst MPs secured a landslide vote against the cull. Despite this strength of public opposition, 6-week pilot culls began in Gloucestershire and Somerset. Failing to kill the target 70% of the badger population, they were extended, but still failed to hit the target. In February 2014 an independent expert panel concluded that the culls were ineffective, as had been predicted. Yet the culls went ahead for a second year in the same locations. In October, ADI took part in the International March for Elephants in London, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with events in 37 cities worldwide highlighting the illegal ivory trade. Despite opposition from ADI and a coalition of groups, Namibia captured and exported 148 wild animals, including threatened and internationally-protected species such as rhinos and elephants, to the National Zoological Park in Havana, Cuba. In Colombia, ADI participated in discussions on policy in the cities of Sogamoso, Duitama and Tunja. We will continue to advise on initiatives to legally protect animals in the region.

Annual Review ADI lNAVS lLDF 2013 Campaigns Animals in Entertainment

Our Animals in Entertainment campaign addresses the use of performing animals in areas other than circuses – where animals suffer or are abused simply in the name of public amusement. Some of the abusive establishments we have exposed in the circus industry including Have Trunk Jan appears on national TV in the US to stop an Will Travel (HTWT), Chipperfield Promotions, and Bobby Roberts’ Circus are also involved in elephant calf being handed to elephant trainers the supply of animals for films and TV. We highlighted the hidden suffering of animals in movies including: two elephants from Germany used in Welsh film ‘Y Syrcas’; four tigers in ‘Life of Pi’, one of which it was revealed “ Damn near drowned” on set; two trained lions in ‘Gambit’; a cheetah in ‘The Counselor’; a chimpanzee and lion in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’; ‘The Hundred Year Old Man’ featuring Vana Mana, one of the three elephants ADI exposed being chained and beaten whilst with the Great British Circus (one of her companions Delhi has died but Vana Mana and Sonja continue to perform in circuses). We opposed filming at Seaworld for ‘Anchorman 2’ and Marineland Antibes for ‘Rust and Bone’, and secured over 14,000 signatures condemning ‘Blancanieves’ (a themed Snow White) after bulls were killed during production. We approach companies using performing animals for promotional activities, urging them to adopt a ‘no animals policy’. In 2013 this included: Bosch and Barry M, tigers in TV adverts; Whiskas and Yves Saint Laurent, leopards; Harper’s Bazaar, a tiger cub and baby gibbons for a photo shoot; 30 Seconds to Mars and The Flaming Lips, a lion, wolf, zebra, and monkey in music videos. We contacted Cybercoders after they had an elephant supplied by HTWT; after seeing our evidence at We are working hard to end bullfighting. HTWT, they promptly announced they would never use the company again and had reference to them removed from coverage of the event. ADI oppose bullfighting across the world. Working with groups in Europe, we urged the Spanish government not to grant bullfighting cultural heritage status, but were defeated and now must work to reverse this decision. In Colombia, we took part in a candlelit procession to defend the bullfighting ban in Bogota and urged Cartagena de Indias not to allow bullfighting to return, where sadly it has since resumed. Proof of the desperate need for vigilance and resolve. We promoted the film Blackfish which shone a light on the suffering of captive orcas and applauded the Indian government announcement they would " not allow dolphinariums " after a coalition of groups, including ADI, called on them to prohibit the display of dolphins and their capture from the wild. With many unaware of the suffering during training until they saw our video, rides have been ended at Bristol Renaissance Faire, Grays Harbor County Fair, Jaycees Gregg County Fair, Lake Renaissance Festival, Upland Lemon Festival and Orange County Fair. Our undercover footage inside HTWT was vital in ending a breeding agreement between Oregon Zoo and HTWT, which entitled HTWT to ownership of a newborn baby elephant called Lily because they owned her father. Oregon Zoo purchased both Lily and her father. ADI appeared on national TV denouncing the agreement. Other parts of this campaign saw us urging local authorities not to bring camels and into British city centres as part of their Christmas festivities, and denouncing Hialeah Fair in Florida where dogs were forced to race with monkeys strapped to their backs.

In late 2010, ADI began operations in Bolivia to enforce the ban on all animals in circuses we had secured two years before. Only one circus had complied with the law, for eight others it was business as usual and they were spread all over Bolivia – a very large, remote country with few roads. Lion Ark is the story of how ADI tracked down every circus and rescued every animal (including monkeys and others), with every twist and turn and drama caught on film, building to the joyous finale of 25 lions being flown to freedom. A completely live action documentary, Lion Ark puts the audience at the heart of a difficult and dangerous animal rescue operation. Animal Rescues Animal Rescues

Our animal rescue work is tied to our campaigns. We often rescue animals during our investigations, or take legal action to seize and relocate animals whose plight we have exposed. Some animals such as dogs, cats, chickens and rodents can be adopted but generally the large animals such as lions remain in our care for life – although we have also successfully returned monkeys and other animals to the wild. We place our animals with trusted sanctuary partners and

In 2013 we tracked them down; in 2014 we rescued fund the building of cages and enclosures, food and veterinary and general care. These costs the animals: Rey, Smith and Amazonas in a have been steadily rising, so we are raising funds for animal care. Peruvian circus in 2013 – less than a year later ADI swooped to save them all. The animals we rescue have endured years of physical abuse and severe confinement. But with your help we are rebuilding their lives and many will enjoy decades of freedom. The ADI family now numbers almost forty animals – including 26 lions rescued from Bolivian circuses, two lions rescued from a Portuguese circus, two baboons (one from a circus in Bolivia, one from the pet trade in Cyprus), three monkeys from a Swedish laboratory, and horses rescued during Operation Lion Ark in Bolivia. So our regular appeals to supporters to help care for our adopted rescue animals are born of a real need to cover their living costs – the Bolivian lions in the US and our remaining lions in South cost us in the region of £65,000 a year. A cost that is often soon forgotten, is the cost of the rescue itself, temporary holding cages and fencing, veterinary care, food, cleaning and general care. The film Lion Ark highlights the immense Rescued baboons Tilin and Tina now share a life of scale and logistics of closing down the Bolivian circus industry and rescuing all of the animals. freedom in an ADI funded sanctuary. Now we are preparing for a similar challenge to enforce the law in Peru. In 2013, one year after Peru had passed a ban, our undercover teams hit the road and began a census of animals in circuses. We began liaison with the Peruvian authorities about how the ban would be enforced and in early 2014 were undertaking the huge logistical preparations for a rescue mission on this scale - securing land, building holding cages and veterinary facilities, and planning the seizures. We were also receiving calls from Colombia to undertake an enforcement operation there. By late 2014 this massive mission we named Operation Spirit of Freedom was underway in two huge countries, Peru and Colombia, and in phase one we had in our care 22 lions and 4 monkeys, with more to get. We urgently need funds to save the circus animals in Peru and every £1 will count. It is not often we get a chance to say: “Help us go and save these animals in this country Jan Creamer oversees the confiscation of lions from a circus in Peru in 2014. and we will end the suffering there once and for all.” Please donate and help raise funds for the rescue of the animals in the Peru circuses!

The three monkeys from a Swedish laboratory now live in a large outdoor enclosure in an ADI funded sanctuary. Colo Colo spent over a decade in a tiny filthy circus cage on the back of a truck. Today, thanks to ADI, he happily roams a 14 acre enclosure with his companions, Lulu and Muñeca. Investigations Investigations

Our video and photographic evidence is a cornerstone of our campaigns all over the world, not just for ADI’s work, but it is used by many other organisations. When people think of the shocking images that transformed British attitudes to animals in circuses they recall Mary Chipperfield beating and kicking Trudy, the baby chimpanzee too frightened and lonely to go into her dog box; the horrific abuse of Anne the elephant at Bobby Roberts’ Circus; Chipperfield’s elephant groom Steve Gills, jailed for the appalling brutality and beating of the

British Circus; the tigers being screamed at and hit with a huge tent pole, at Circus Harlequinn. All footage filmed by the undercover teams of ADI. All suffering that would have gone unseen but for the courage of our people. As we stand tantalisingly close to a British ban on wild animal acts, it is impossible to believe we could have reached this position without ADI investigations. Few take on this hazardous work, we know it is vital to changing minds. In 2013 Colombia became the fifth country in South America to introduce an animal circus ban, a chain of events set in motion when we released the findings of an undercover investigation. To get the evidence we needed, which has changed a whole continent, our team was embedded in the circuses for approaching two years. Moving from country to country, filming, photographing in the most difficult and risky circumstances. The ban on the capture of owl monkeys from the wild for malaria experiments has now been ratified. It was our field officers’ undercover work – travelling up the Amazon in dugout canoes, A bear from the US circus act ‘Hall’s Bears’ forced heading into the jungle at night with the trappers – that secured the evidence and showed people to perform. the brutal reality of wild capture. Animal experimentation is a world so secretive that laws have been passed to make sure people do not talk of it! When its defenders talk publicly, they speak of precision and best practice, of high standards, codes of practice and government inspections. They do not expect to be challeged or exposed. Our team recently penetrated the heart of the laboratory monkey supply industry inside Noveprim in Spain and Biodia on Mauritius. Our film shows the true brutality of vivisection as babies are torn screaming from their mothers and then tattooed whilst fully conscious; monkeys swung around by their tails; terrible confinement; terrified animals, some heavily pregnant, being roughly manhandled and their arms tied behind their backs. In the 1990s, ADI was the first organisation to secure footage inside the secretive animal training centres. We have not stopped and this year released our first investigation in Korea, inside ‘Monkey School’. So how do the trainers get those monkeys to walk on their hind legs, dressed as

In Germany, we exposed Europe’s last chimpanzee act and, in the US, we secured footage inside the prison truck that is home for a performing bear act, the bears desperately circling small metal cells – the abusers never thought our cameras could pry inside. Our team will remain on the frontline of ending animal suffering, taking our cameras where they are not wanted! Please give generously to keep our people in the field. This is how we make a difference.

Tonight, tiny owl monkeys in the Amazon rainforest will sleep undisturbed by the terrifying arrival of the vivisection trappers – thanks to your support that put our people in the field.

All of the countries that have banned animal circuses owe a debt to the people who, each time, sent a cheque or made out a direct debit when we called for help. Every day that our rescued lions, horses and primates enjoy the sun on their back and can run as fast as they want, is because of the generosity of our animal adopters and other contributors.

2013 saw us taking further steps to improve our finances after the devastating impact of the recession two years ago. Our thanks for everyone’s continued support.

Thank you so very, very much, Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips and all members of the ADI Board.

18 Annual Review 2013 ADI lNAVS lLDF These tragic lions were photographed by an ADI Field Officer in a Colombian circus in 2013 – they look completely broken. By late 2014 they are SAFE in ADI custody recovering well. Now we need your help to get them to a permanent home. Roll of Honour

Legacies left to us by our supporters in their Wills remain our greatest source of income. The undercover investigations, the search for non-animal research techniques, the rescues, the public education and awareness – are dependent upon this vital funding. The consideration and forethought of these supporters has left a lasting legacy for animals and helps to bring closer the day when animals are free of suffering caused by humans.
