Liu Ching-chih (Liu Jingzhi) $ {\in3L sen t a letter accompanied by an article by Barbara Mittler1 fro m th e Institute o f Chinese Studies , University o f Heidelberg, to Kan Lai-bing(Jian Libing) MMfe K , University Librarian at the time. In this letter Liu offered t o donate his research materials, collected ove r the past two decades o n music, translation, and Chinese literature, from his research project on "The History of New Music in China, 1885-1985". 2 Since the collection comprised mostly music, I was asked by Kan to examine this treasure on July 30. On August 4, Chan Hing- yan (Chen Qingen) PjfcJtLil , the present Head o f the Department o f Music and I , made a trip to Room 20 6 at the Centre o f Asian Studies, where these material s were housed, which i s not fa r fro m th e Hung Hing Yin g Building, home o f th e Music Library and the Department o f Music. Scores, books, newspaper clippings , and journals filled the entire room . While perusing these impressive research materials, we learned that part o f the collection was housed at Liu's residence. I accepted his invitation to view the collection the following da y and wa s excited to find i t even more noteworthy. I submitted m y assessment o f the collectio n t o Kan shortl y afterwards , an d wa s charged with the responsibility o f acquiring the entire collection, a voluminous 50 cartons. Liu's generous donation was duly acknowledged b y Kan, as well as Manolete Mora and Y . C. Cheng (Zhen g Yaozong)SP)S^, former Head o f the Departmen t of Music and former Vice-Chancellor o f the University of Hong Kong respectively at the time. Dissertation Abstract: Practices of Scriptural Economy: Compiling and Copying a Seventh-Century Chinese Buddhist Anthology By Alexander Ong Hsu This dissertation reads a seventh-century Chinese Buddhist anthology to examine how medieval Chinese Buddhists practiced reducing and reorganizing their voluminous scriptural tra- dition into more useful formats. The anthology, A Grove of Pearls from the Garden of Dharma (Fayuan zhulin ), was compiled by a scholar-monk named Daoshi (?–683) from hundreds of Buddhist scriptures and other religious writings, listing thousands of quotations un- der a system of one-hundred category-chapters. This dissertation shows how A Grove of Pearls was designed by and for scriptural economy: it facilitated and was facilitated by traditions of categorizing, excerpting, and collecting units of scripture. Anthologies like A Grove of Pearls selectively copied the forms and contents of earlier Buddhist anthologies, catalogs, and other compilations; and, in turn, later Buddhists would selectively copy from it in order to spread the Buddhist dharma. I read anthologies not merely to describe their contents but to show what their compilers and copyists thought they were doing when they made and used them. A Grove of Pearls from the Garden of Dharma has often been read as an example of a Buddhist leishu , or “Chinese encyclopedia.” But the work’s precursors from the sixth cen- tury do not all fit neatly into this genre because they do not all use lei or categories consist- ently, nor do they all have encyclopedic breadth like A Grove of Pearls.

Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on.

He studied the cello with Heinrich Werkmeister at the Tokyo Music School and then studied German-style harmony and counterpoint with Klaus Pringsheim, a pupil of Gustav Mahler, as well as conducting with Joseph Rosenstock. Later, he was appointed music director of the Imperial Orchestra in Tokyo, and the musicians who played under him broadened his knowledge of traditional Japanese Music. He then taught at Kyoto's Elizabeth Music School and Municipal College of the Arts. He composed a significant body of orchestral, chamber and vocal music, including a Symphony No. 2 (1960) and Piccolo Sinfonia for String Orchestra (1984). He became head of the composition department of the conservatory in 1923. He later studied at the Chicago Musical College in 1931 under Wesley LaViolette. He composed orchestral and chamber works but is best-known for his songs.
