The Floraof RossCounty, Ohio, COMPARED WITH THAT OF NEW ENGLAND. Read June8th. W. E. SAFFORD. In Southern Ohio the firstof the spring flowersis the "pep- per-and-salt",or "harbinger of spring", Erigenia bulbosa,Nutt., a tiny Umbelifer. I have foundit as early as the last week in February, although it does not usually appear until a monthlater. It grows in shady woods, where it is usually found nestling be- tween the forkingroots of beeches, associated with Isopyrulmbi- ternaturm,T. and Gr. The latteris a beautifullittle plant closely resemblingT/zalictriim aizernoinoides, but with fibrousinstead of tuberousroots. In the region throughwhich I botanized nearly everyspecimen of Thalictrnmanemonoides had pink-tintedsepals. Of the two species of Hepatica which occur in Southern Ohio, Hepatica acuitiloba,DC., is much more common. I have found mianyspecimens which seem to be intermediatebetween the two species. Many other spring plants occur which are fa- miliarto New England botanists, such as: Dicentra Ca;uadensis, DC., and D. Cucullaria, DC.; Dentaria laciniata, Muhl.; Sani- guinaria Canadensis, L., and Podop/hyllumpeltatum, L. A zie- monenemorosa, L., does not occur. I have never found Den/iaria diphylla,L.; but it has been recordedas growingin the vicinity of Cincinnati. Trilliuimgrandzjiorumn, Salisb., is common. Associated with it are two Trilliumsnot foundin New Eiigland: Trilliumsssessile,
