It is an endeavor, which involved numerous professors, students, colleagues, friends and family. When I started at Florida State University in August 1994, I had no comprehension of how difficult it would be for everyone involved. Because of the help and kindness of these dear friends and family, I have finally accomplished my dream. -

LES MISERABLES by SJ-Chan V0.4
LES MISERABLES by SJ-Chan v0.4 Welcome to France. That’s all this world is, is France. There is nothing else besides France. But there is song. And hardship. And revolution. The time is 1828. It has been 14 years since the restoration of the Kingdom of France under Louis the XVIII. His younger brother (also brother to the deposed Louis XVI) Charles X is King of France. But revolution is brewing and in 2 short years the house of Bourbon will fall in the July Revolution. Louis Philippe I, of the house of Orleans will be crowned King of the Constitutional Monarchy. While the Monarchy would reign until 1848, a deadly cholera epidemic will sweep through Paris in the spring of 1832 and by June 5th, following the death of popular General Jean Maximilien Lamarque (of cholera), the poor and downtrodden of the city will erupt into open rebellion as 100,000 people take up arms and take to the streets. *****[DRAMATIS PERSONAE]***** For the Duration of this Jump, everything you say will be sung. If you are a drop in, you must remember to sing all the time or people will view you with the same curiosity as people in most settings view people who start singing their feelings and thoughts in casual conversation. However, unlike other Musical Jumps, no one will spontaneously spring into a dance number in France. If you’re not a Drop-In, at the end of this jump you may keep your new singing voice, either as your new voice, or as an alternative voice. -

Do You Hear the People Sing?: Musical Aesthetics and French Nationalism in Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg’S Adaptation of Victor Hugo’S Les Misérables
Do You Hear the People Sing?: Musical Aesthetics and French Nationalism in Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s Adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables Suvarna Variyar Introduction In 1936, Walter Benjamin argued that the processes of copying, reproduction, and adaptation strip authenticity from any original work.1 I seek here to apply this principle to the reformation of French author Victor Hugo’s 1862 literary opus Les Misérables, as it transforms from novel to Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s 1980 French rock opera adaptation, and again to the highly successful 1985 English production by Cameron Mackintosh. Hugo’s original work was in effect a thesis novel,2 with its key premise being that post-revolutionary France was intrinsically sacred, thereby elevating the State as a formless ideal towards godhead. I will argue in this article that the extremely popular Anglophone musical adaptation of Les Misérables illustrates a number of translation and adaptation choices which minimise and sideline the sacral-national core of Hugo’s novel. These changes in turn highlight how the French state is conceived of as a sacral force in the original work - one framed by the unique European French linguistic and socio-historical context that defies transposition to a popular Anglophone discourse such as that of the Broadway musical - by examining the ways in which the contrasting aesthetics of language and narrative form serve to shape and alter meaning. This article addresses the following key questions: how does this theme fare when processed into a different form - the French rock opera of 1980 - Suvarna Variyar is a postgraduate student in the Studies in Religion department at The University of Sydney. -
The Philosophical and Political Commitments of Eugène Catalan
Bulletind e la SociétéRoyale d e sScience sd e Liège ,Vol.84,2015,102 -114 The philosophical and political commitments of Eugène Catalan VANDERSMISSEN Jan Centre d’Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques –Université de Liège - Belgique Introduction In 1865 the Frenchman Eugène Catalan (1814-1894) was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Liège. In the nineteenth century the Belgian government developed a policy of attracting and employing famous foreign scholars, mainly coming from the German principalities and France, in order to bring the education system to a higher level. The most illustrious examples of this successful recruitment policy, which was applied in favour of both the State Universities of Liège and Ghent, are the biologist Theodor Schwann (1810-1882), who moved from Berlin to Louvain and from there to Liège, where he laid the foundations of the school of physiology, the writer and critic Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1804-1869) who taught French literature at Liège before accepting chairs at the Collège de France and the École normale supérieure, and Friedrich August Kekulé (1829-1896), who moved from Heidelberg to Ghent where he introduced organic chemistry before he moved on to Bonn[1]. In Catalan’scase, however, the appointment had an outspoken political and philosophical dimension. Catalan sought and found refuge in Belgium because his career prospects in France was severely hindered due to his strong republican and anti-Bonapartist viewpoints. In a speech he gave at the University’s Academic Hall on the occasion of his retirement on December 7, 1881, Catalan emphasized that two passions filled his life: la Politique militante et les Mathématiques [“Militant Politics and Mathematics”][2]. -

Tome 5.
