Thread starter chillybilly Start date Jan 24, Messages 3, A recent thread here, with rare consensus, decried the disappointments that are most rock star autobiographies. In most cases, the musicians were maddeningly elliptical about …music ie the creative process A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel and recordingabout the development of their instrumental and vocal abilities and about performing. Instead, they focused on gratuitous information about their wives and girlfriends, their dogs, their children, their houses and, yes, their inevitable drink and drug problems. But most famous musicians still regard themselves as normal A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel blokes and are uncomfortable with loss of privacy and admiration that often progresses to adulation, obsession and even stalking. Originally from Long Island, Phantom writes or ghost writes — pun! Paragraphs are long and dense but chock full of information, anecdotes and observations. A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel Phantom, and it really was a matter of making a conscious choice to ditch the Dazed And Confused-meets-Saturday Night Fever late 70s hair and clothing and to revive, almost singlehandedly, the rockabilly of early Elvis and the rest of the stable. In an unambiguous and symbolic statement of intent, Phantom walked into a boutique, bought his hepcat outfit and abandoned his old clothes in the changing booth. He got a pompadour haircut, much to the delight of his then-girlfriend, and the rest is literally history. Lanky, long-faced, tattooed and playing the drums while standing up! There may not have been two more different people on the planet but there they were. Phantom provides delicious and often sentimental details of his meetings and collaborations with rock royalty, Beatles and Stones among them. The pitched battles and tribal behavior of fan cliques who self-segregate by musical genre new wave, metal, rockabilly, hair bands, etc. Thankfully, Phantom eventually discusses at length the complexities of the relationships in a trio, especially over the decades. To be fair, Phantom does dwell on the mundane at times: dogs, houses, cars, kids. But in this book they serve as context rather than distractions. And, like a good drummer, A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel tempo never wanders. Supporting Member. Messages 9, I'm in. Book seems like a good read. It's an interesting read if but fairly typical of the genre with the caveat that Slim Jim's adventures are more interesting than most. I had hoped for more reflection and insight. While I definitely think Jim would be a fun guy to hang out I don't really walk away from this feeling like I know much about him as a person. I will say that I think he probably is all the things he presents himself as in the book. A humble guy who's still a fan boy This book is standard wild tales rock memoir stuff. A humble guy who's still a fan boy at heart. He's clearly grateful for and respectful of the bands past and accomplishments. So I know him as I guy you'd like to catch a show or a game with. It was I definitely recommend it if you love the Stray Cats. I just saw Slim play at the Nashville Boogie and I kicked my self that I didn't bring the advance copy for him to A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel. He's a guy who's stoked for Rockabilly, enthusiastic, grateful and still stylin after so long. Final analysis: Fun book and worth a read for sure. Jul 16, Peter O'Connor rated it liked it. There is no great reading challenge here but Slim Jim Phantom seems such a nice guy that it is difficult not to appreciate his tale. He seems to have a little trouble sticking to any kind of chronology but, rather than it being any kind of device, it comes across as more of an oversight. As drummer for the Stray Cats, the gig was always going to come with a limited shelf life but his A Stray Cat Struts: My Life as a Rockabilly Rebel and gratitude is refreshing and he still seems to convey an optimism and wide-eyed glee at having lived the rock and roll dream. The fact that he did an infamous stint as a club owner on the Sunset Strip and still hits the road to perform whenever he can shows that he is not ready to wake from it just yet. Mar 15, Vincent Andersen rated it really liked it. Don't look for brilliant wordplay or deep introspection and you'll enjoy this quick breezy ride. Nov 25, Jim rated it really liked it. I did. One reviewer mentioned that he was a "name-dropper" I get the sense that Skinny Jim loves rock n' roll and has thoroughly enjoyed his life as a rock n' roller. You can feel the excitement he must have been feeling when he met people like and Keith Moon. He was friends with Bill Wyman and Johnny Ramone. I for one am glad Slim Jim Phantom decided to write down some of his adventures. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars I would have liked more about the Stray Cats and his time in the band. Maybe some info about their recording process, etc I really liked that he was positive all through the book. I don't think he had an unkind word to say about any one. I have no doubt that many people love and respect this man. Mar 21, Gwen rated it it was amazing. Slim Jim Phantom didn't stay chronologically in his story telling and seemed to repeat some of his stories in part, but what a great book and life he presents. This is not a tell all book dishing the goods on others nor is it a book that disses others. He has met some great entertainers in his life and name drops often, but in an interesting way. He does not lash out at his former band members. I received this book free from Goodreads First Reads. Oct 16, Wayne rated it really liked it. Not particularly revealing, or a challenging read. More just a collection of memories of friends and events in rock and roll. But he seems like a nice guy, and it's a pleasant journey through the lifestyle. I imagine it could have been much more hard hitting but in the current climate it is nice to read something stripped of all cynicism - which has gained this an extra star. Dec 24, Nicole Bennett rated it it was ok. Slow going. Needed more Stray Cats talk instead of name dropping. Pretty boring. Apr 24, Laine rated it liked it. No deep insights, whatever those are. We are taken along on a cruise of the rock n roll dream by one of the luckiest and nicest guys around. At least he lives to tell about it. My husband made me read this book.
