  • Defeated Union School Board President Vows to Ask for Recount Of
Defeated Union school board president vows to ask for recount of mail-in ballots By Rebecca Panico Staff Writer Union Board of Education President Ronnie McDowell said he wants an official review of the mail-in ballots after he came up 29 votes short in his bid for re-election, losing to Sharon Higgins. “I will be asking for a recount/recheck of the absentee ballots because I have my suspicions that those voters may have been unduly influenced by people ‘helping’ voters fill out their absentee ballots,” McDowell said in a Nov. 13 statement. The tension was palpable on Nov. 9, as Union County Board of Elections officials counted the provisional ballots at their Elizabeth office for the tight school hoard race. McDowell's seat hung in the balance as he looked on during the count. Higgins had a slight lead of 24 votes for the last of three contested seats from ballots cast on Elec tion Day, unofficial results showed Nov. 8. McDowell said he was feeling “not too good,” as he walked downstairs in the county building to watch the count for eligible provisional ballots. His deficit grew once the eligible provisional ballots were tallied by a machine. Jeff Monge, a school board member whose seat was not up for election this year, hugged McDowell after the provi sional results were printed and read aloud. The Union BOE race was contentious, with two factions Photo by Rebecca Panico running candidates for three seats this year. Incumbents From left, Jeff Monge and Vito Nufrio look on as the provisional ballots are about to be counted at the Union Vito Nufrio, Nancy Zuena and McDowell ran together and County Board of Elections in Elizabeth on Nov.

JUKEBOX JAZZ by Ian Muldoon* ____________________________________________________ n 1955 Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock was the first rock and roll record to become number one on the hit parade. It had made a stunning introduction in I the opening moments to a film called Blackboard Jungle. But at that time my favourite record was one by Lionel Hampton. I was not alone. Me and my three jazz loving friends couldn’t be bothered spending hard-earned cash on rock and roll records. Our quartet consisted of clarinet, drums, bass and vocal. Robert (nickname Orgy) was learning clarinet; Malcolm (Slim) was going to learn drums (which in due course he did under the guidance of Gordon LeCornu, a percussionist and drummer in the days when Sydney still had a thriving show scene); Dave (Bebop) loved the bass; and I was the vocalist a la Joe (Bebop) Lane. We were four of 120 RAAF apprentices undergoing three years boarding school training at Wagga Wagga RAAF Base from 1955-1957. Of course, we never performed together but we dreamt of doing so and luckily, dreaming was not contrary to RAAF regulations. At around ten years of age he was given a windup record player and a modest supply of steel needles, on which he played his record collection, consisting of two 78s, one featuring Dizzy Gillespie and the other Fats Waller.

SALES NOTES During his long career, which spanned more than three decades, few artists have blazed as many trails as Red Foley. He became country music's first 'crossover' artist. He was also the first country singer to be featured on network radio and television programs. Foley was hugely popular wherever he went, beginning with his years as 'Rambling Red' on WLS Chicago's 'National Barn Dance,' and continuing with the 'Renfro Valley Barn Dance,' and finally as the genial host of the famed 'Grand Ole Opry' and the landmark television show, 'Ozark Jubilee.' Foley's life was a tragic one. In retrospect, his personal problems seem insurmountable, yet Foley's charisma and talent saw him through these troubled times; his many recordings are his finest legacy. Nearly every Nashville-based star of his stature has had his or her story told by now, everyone except Red Foley. This box set and hardcover book document Foley's remarkable recording career. Included is every commercial recording made by Foley up to 1950, with the exception of his sacred and children's recordings.
