Dear Parents, I‘ve been thinking about two different topics that form “bookends” to Parshas Toldos. I was listening to a shiur in which the maggid shiur quoted an obvservation of Dr. David Pelcovitz on the beginning of the is about the passing of פרק כ"ה .Parsha. He notes that the Parsha starts in the middle of a Perek generations. Parshas Toldos starts with Yitzchak and Rivka davening for children. Why the difference in division between Perek and Parsha? The Perakim, we know, were divided up in the by people who had no concern for the Mesorah of Klal Yisrael. The divisions of the weekly Parshiyos are part of our Mesorah. Those scholars who divided up the Perakim were merely concerned with the passing of generations and saw the entire Perek as one topic. To us, however, the Chinuch of our children is a topic that is most important and dear to us. The Chinuch of Klal Yisrael is indeed an entirely different Parsha. At the end of the Parsha, Rashi makes a famous and cryptic comment on a Pasuk that describes Rivka as the “mother of Yaakov and Eisav.” One could ask, don’t we already know that Rivka is the mother of I don’t know what this teaches us.” Why did“ - אֵ ינִייֹודֵעַ מַה מְּ לַמְּדֵ נּו :Yaakov and Eisav? Rashi answers Rashi write that? If he didn’t have an answer, why did he write anything at all? fully formed and,עשוי A possible answer that is given sums up the topic of Yaakov and Eisav. Eisav is born complete. Yaakov is born reaching at the heel of Eisav, striving for something more than he already is. .is the essence of who we are as Klal Yisrael. We are not complete אֵ ינִייֹודֵעַ מַה מְּ לַמְּדֵ נּו The concept of We understand that there is always something more to learn and accomplish. No matter how much we have learned, there is always something new that we simply “don’t know.” This Shabbos, we have an opportunity to connect both of these topics. Even though many of us are experienced parents and teachers, we can say “I don’t know” about the topic of raising children and gain more insights into Chinuch. We hope that everyone will take advantage of the many learning opportunities over Shabbos about this central topic.
