For other help or specific questions that cannot be addressed through the Help and E-Mail functions above, you can send Internet e-mail to the following addresses: For technical assistance with using the site: David Klein [email protected] Or call at 319-335-6748 Note that you should send e-mail to this address through your regular e-mail program. 4 Part 3: Getting On-line/Helpful Hits Getting Online To get online, you should have a computer with a modem (or other Internet connection), an ISP, and a phone line. If you have an e-mail account you can access or browse the Web already, then you are ready to get started. You must use a Web browser to access the training. The most common browsers include Internet Explorer 6.0 and Netscape Navigator (Communicator) 7 on Windows computers. These browsers are also available for Macintosh computers. If you have other preferences for browsers, please feel free to use them, but also let us know so we can keep track of what type of browsers this training has been tested with. A minimum version number of 4.0 for both Internet Explorer and Netscape is required to use this training (if your version has been updated in the last 3 or 4 years, you probably have a recent enough version). However, we strongly recommend higher versions of these programs. If you want to upgrade versions, you can get downloads of these programs at the following sites: Internet Explorer http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ Netscape Navigator http://www.netscape.com/computing/download/ To prepare for the training, you might want paper and a pencil on hand. These instructions will probably be useful to the side of the keyboard. You will need a Username and password, which should have been provided to you by the CBRC for full participants, or you can create one online for limited use. To get started, get onto the Web as you normally would to browse. No other setup is typically needed. However, you should note a few uncommon issues. 1) If your browser does not accept cookies, you will need to set your browser to accept cookies for this training. 2) If your browser asks you if you want to save passwords and you are using the training in an environment with other users, you should always press No to avoid saving the password. If the browser saves your password, it will allow other users to log in to the training under your name. 3) If you are using a browser in an environment where other users are using the same computer as you, when you are done working, log out and quit the browser to ensure that others do not get access to the training using your name. This Web-based training platform has been piloted for several year and many technical “bugs” have been worked out. However, because this is new training, you may come across components that do not work as you expect them, some that might even be called ‘bugs.’ Most importantly, if you encounter problems or bugs in the program as you complete it, let us know as soon as possible to help us minimize your frustration and effort getting around them. 5 Before starting this course: a checklist ► Check the configuration of the computer that you will be using. Minimum requirements for computer systems using this course are PC — Windows 95 and at least 8M of RAM. Mac — operating system 7.5 and at least 16M of RAM ► Check the version of your browser. Minimum version of Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) required to use this course is Version 4. If the computer you are working on has a browser version of less than 3, you will need to upgrade the browser in order to access the course. You can go to the following sites to download new versions of your browser: Internet Explorer: To download the most recent browser: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ In many cases, if you are using Windows, you may already have an adequate version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer. Look in your Start menu under Programs. Netscape Navigator: General download area for the most recent version: http://www.netscape.com Then press the ‘Download’ button on the bar along the top of the page. America Online: The AOL browser is currently untested with this training. However, late versions should work correctly. ► Check the configuration of your browser. Correct browser configuration for this course simply means that for you to use all functionality of the course the following are necessary: a. Make sure the option to accept cookies in enabled (turned on).

05_096970 ch01.qxp 4/20/07 11:27 PM Page 3 1 Introducing Cascading Style Sheets Cascading style sheets is a language intended to simplify website design and development. Put simply, CSS handles the look and feel of a web page. With CSS, you can control the color of text, the style of fonts, the spacing between paragraphs, how columns are sized and laid out, what back- ground images or colors are used, as well as a variety of other visual effects. CSS was created in language that is easy to learn and understand, but it provides powerful control over the presentation of a document. Most commonly, CSS is combined with the markup languages HTML or XHTML. These markup languages contain the actual text you see in a web page — the hyperlinks, paragraphs, headings, lists, and tables — and are the glue of a web docu- ment. They contain the web page’s data, as well as the CSS document that contains information about what the web page should look like, and JavaScript, which is another language that pro- vides dynamic and interactive functionality. HTML and XHTML are very similar languages. In fact, for the majority of documents today, they are pretty much identical, although XHTML has some strict requirements about the type of syntax used. I discuss the differences between these two languages in detail in Chapter 2, and I also pro- vide a few simple examples of what each language looks like and how CSS comes together with the language to create a web page. In this chapter, however, I discuss the following: ❑ The W3C, an organization that plans and makes recommendations for how the web should functionCOPYRIGHTED and evolve MATERIAL ❑ How Internet documents work, where they come from, and how the browser displays them ❑ An abridged history of the Internet ❑ Why CSS was a desperately needed solution ❑ The advantages of using CSS 05_096970 ch01.qxp 4/20/07 11:27 PM Page 4 Part I: The Basics The next section takes a look at the independent organization that makes recommendations about how CSS, as well as a variety of other web-specific languages, should be used and implemented.

  • Why Websites Can Change Without Warning
Why Websites Can Change Without Warning WHY WOULD MY WEBSITE LOOK DIFFERENT WITHOUT NOTICE? HISTORY: Your website is a series of files & databases. Websites used to be “static” because there were only a few ways to view them. Now we have a complex system, and telling your webmaster what device, operating system and browser is crucial, here’s why: TERMINOLOGY: You have a desktop or mobile “device”. Desktop computers and mobile devices have “operating systems” which are software. To see your website, you’ll pull up a “browser” which is also software, to surf the Internet. Your website is a series of files that needs to be 100% compatible with all devices, operating systems and browsers. Your website is built on WordPress and gets a weekly check up (sometimes more often) to see if any changes have occured. Your site could also be attacked with bad files, links, spam, comments and other annoying internet pests! Or other components will suddenly need updating which is nothing out of the ordinary. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IF SOMETHING HAS CHANGED? Any update to the following can make your website look differently: There are 85 operating systems (OS) that can update (without warning). And any of the most popular roughly 7 browsers also update regularly which can affect your site visually and other ways. (Lists below) Now, with an OS or browser update, your site’s 18 website components likely will need updating too. Once website updates are implemented, there are currently about 21 mobile devices, and 141 desktop devices that need to be viewed for compatibility.

  • Kenneth Arnes Ryan Paul Jaca Network Software Applications History
Kenneth Arnes Ryan Paul Jaca Network Software Applications Networks consist of hardware, such as servers, Ethernet cables and wireless routers, and networking software. Networking software differs from software applications in that the software does not perform tasks that end-users can see in the way word processors and spreadsheets do. Instead, networking software operates invisibly in the background, allowing the user to access network resources without the user even knowing the software is operating. History o Computer networks, and the networking software that enabled them, began to appear as early as the 1970s. Early networks consisted of computers connected to each other through telephone modems. As personal computers became more pervasive in homes and in the workplace in the late 1980s and early 1990s, networks to connect them became equally pervasive. Microsoft enabled usable and stable peer-to-peer networking with built-in networking software as early as 1995 in the Windows 95 operating system. Types y Different types of networks require different types of software. Peer-to-peer networks, where computers connect to each other directly, use networking software whose basic function is to enable file sharing and printer sharing. Client-server networks, where multiple end-user computers, the clients, connect to each other indirectly through a central computer, the server, require networking software solutions that have two parts. The server software part, running on the server computer, stores information in a central location that client computers can access and passes information to client software running on the individual computers. Application-server software work much as client-server software does, but allows the end-user client computers to access not just data but also software applications running on the central server.

Can Mozilla manage to upset Microsoft’s lock on the browser market? We’ve found that Netscape on its own was not able to survive. 19 However, perhaps the Mozilla business model is different.
