Web Browser Set-Up Guide for New BARC Web Browser Set-up Guide for new BARC The new BARC system is web-based and is designed to work best with Netscape 4.79. Use the chart below to determine the appropriate set-up for your web browser to use new BARC. What type of computer do you use? What you will need to do in order to use the new BARC system… I am a Thin Client user. You do not need to do anything. The version of Netscape available to Thin Client users (version 4.75) will work with the new BARC system. I use a PC and the following statement about the Netscape web browser applies to my workstation…. I don’t have Netscape. Proceed to Section 2 of this document for instructions on how you can download and install Netscape 4.79. I only have Netscape 6.x or Netscape 7.x. Proceed to Section 2 of this document for instructions on how you can download and install Netscape 4.79. I currently have Netscape 4.79. You do not need to do anything. The new BARC system was designed to work best with the version of Netscape you have. I currently have Netscape 4.75 or Netscape 4.76. You do not need to do anything. Even though the new BARC system is designed to work best in Netscape 4.79, the application will work fine with Netscape 4.75 and Netscape 4.76. If you have a version of Netscape 4.x on your computer, but it is not Netscape 4.75, Netscape 4.76 or Netscape 4.79, we highly recommend that you uninstall the version of Netscape 4.x that you have before installing Netscape 4.79. Having multiple versions of Netscape 4.x can be problematic with using the new BARC system. IMPORTANT: Please check with your workstation support staff before uninstalling any software from your workstation. They will be able to provide you with instructions and assistance specific to your workstation environment. 1. From the Start button in the taskbar, navigate to SettingsControl Panel 2. At the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, scroll through list of software at the bottom and select the appropriate Netscape application to uninstall. Click on the Add/Remove button. NOTE: The screenshot below is only an example of the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box. If you have Netscape 4.79, you do not need to remove it. 4. When the Question dialog box is displayed, click on the Yes button. NOTE: The screenshot above is only an example of the Question dialog box. When it is completed, the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box will be displayed. If you scroll through the list, the version of Netscape you selected to remove is no longer on the list. Click on the OK button. 6. IMPORTANT: Please check with your workstation support staff before installing any software on your workstation. They will be able to provide you with instructions and assistance specific to your workstation environment. 1. Go to http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive.html 2. Click on the Download hyperlink for Windows 95, 98, or NT – Complete Install. At the File Download dialog box, click on the Save button. 6. Navigate to where you would like to save the file. We recommend you save the file on our desktop for ease of locating it. When the download is completed, click on the Close button. 8. Double click on the Netscape installer icon on your desktop (or wherever you save it) to begin the installation process. It is strongly recommended that you exit all Windows programs before beginning the installation. 9. At the Setup Type dialog box, we recommend you accept the default selections by clicking on the Next button. NOTE: The defaults should be as follow: 1. Type of setup is Typical and 2. At the Netscape Desktop Preference Options dialog box, choose the list of option(s) you would like to have and click on the Next button. 13. At the Start Copying Files dialog box, click on the Install button. 15. When the installation is complete, the Information dialog will be displayed. Click on the OK button. 17. A window similar to the one below will display the components that were installed during the installation process. You can close the window by clicking on the ‘X’ button on the upper right. 18. You might see shortcuts icons, such as AOL, Outlook Express, etc., display on your desktop. Hazlettt In May 1998 the U.S. Department of Justice ("DOJ") accused Microsoft of violatirig the Sherman Antitrust Act by vigorously compet- ing against Netscape's Navigator software with Microsoft's rival browser, Internet Explorer. The substance of the allegation revolves around defensive actions taken by Microsoft to protect the dominant po- sition enjoyed by Microsoft's Windows operating system. The DOJ's theory is that, were it not for Microsoft's overly aggressive reaction to Netscape, Navigator software would have been more broadly distributed, thus enabling competition to Windows. This competition would have come directly from Java, a computer language developed by Sun Microsystems and embedded in Netscape software, allowing applications to run on any underlying operating system.
