All Rights Reserved Abstract We believe that formal methods of all kinds are critical to mobile code security, as one route to gaining the assurance level necessary for running potentially hos- tile code on a routine basis. We begin by examining Java, and understanding the weaknesses in its architecture, on both design and implementation levels. Iden- tifying dynamic linking as a key problem, we produce a formal model of linking, and prove desirable properties about our model. This investigation leads to a deep understanding of the underlying problem. Finally, we turn our attention to crypto- graphic hash functions, and their analysis with binary decision diagrams (BDDs). We show that three commonly used hash functions (MD4, MD5, and SHA-1) do not offer ideal strength against second preimages. The ability of a cryptographic hash function to resist the finding of second preimages is critical for its use in digi- tal signature schemes: a second preimage enables the forgery of digital signatures, which would undermine confidence in digitally signed mobile code. Our results show that modern theorem provers and BDD-based reasoning tools are effective for reasoning about some of the key problems facing mobile code security today. iii Acknowledgments My advisor, Andrew Appel, offered sure guidance through what turned out to be an exceptionally smooth journey through graduate school.

We also encourage you to report any violations of the code of conduct to LYRASIS (see the Code of Conduct for more details). DSpace chat has moved to Slack Our old IRC channels are essentially unmonitored these days. Instead, we recommend joining our DSpace.org Slack for any chat-based support. You are also welcome to email your question to the dspace-tech Mailing List as an alternative, or choose one of the other DSpace Sup port options. There are two dedicated DSpace IRC (internet relay chat) channels (i.e. "rooms") on the irc.freenode.net server: #dspace (irc://irc.freenode.net/dspace) - all DSpace discussions and live Q & A. This channel is unlogged. #duraspace (irc://irc.freenode.net/duraspace) - Old duraspace community channel (no longer used). As of July 2018, this channel is unlogged.     Gerry Kennedy- Fact Sheets Pottable Apps xx/xx/2009 PORTABLE APPS FACT SHEET What is a portable program? A Portable App or program is a piece of software that can be accessed from a portable USB device (USB thumb or pen drive, PDA, iPod or external hard disk) and used on any computer. It could be an email program, a browser, a system recovery tool or a program to achieve a set task – reading, writing, music editing, art and design, magnification, text to speech, OCR or to provide more efficient or equitable access (e.g. Click ‘n’ Type onscreen keyboard). There are hundreds of programs that are available. All of a user’s data and settings are always stored on the thumb drive so when a user unplugs the device, none of the personal data is left behind. It provides a way of accessing and using relevant software – anywhere, anytime. Portable Apps are relatively new. Apps do NOT need to be installed on the ‘host’ computer. No Tech support is required on campus. No permissions are required in order to have the software made available to them. Students can work anywhere - as long as they have access to a computer. The majority of programs are free (Freeware or Open Source). Fact sheets, user guides and support are all available on the web or within the Help File in the various applications. Or – have students write their own! Be sure to encourage all users to BACK UP their files as USB drives can be lost, stolen, misplaced, left behind, erased -due to strong magnetic fields or accidentally compromised (left on a parcel shelf in a car, or left in clothes and washed!).
