“He Was One of Us” – Joseph Conrad As a Home Army Author
Yearbook of Conrad Studies (Poland) Vol. 13 2018, pp. 17–29 doi: 0.4467/20843941YC.18.002.11237 “HE WAS ONE OF US” – JOSEPH CONRAD AS A HOME ARMY AUTHOR Stefan Zabierowski The University of Silesia, Katowice Abstract: The aim of this article is to show how Conrad’s fiction (and above all the novelLord Jim) influenced the formation of the ethical attitudes and standards of the members of the Polish Home Army, which was the largest underground army in Nazi-occupied Europe. The core of this army was largely made up of young people who had been born around the year 1920 (i.e. after Poland had regained her independence in 1918) and who had had the opportunity to become acquainted with Conrad’s books during the interwar years. During the wartime occupation, Conrad became the fa- vourite author of those who were actively engaged in fighting the Nazi regime, familiarizing young conspirators with the ethics of honour—the conviction that fighting in a just cause was a reward in itself, regardless of the outcome. The views of this generation of soldiers have been recorded by the writers who were among them: Jan Józef Szczepański, Andrzej Braun and Leszek Prorok. Keywords: Joseph Conrad, World War II, Poland, Polish Home Army, Home Army, Warsaw Uprising 1 In order to fully understand the extraordinary role that Joseph Conrad’s novels played in forming the ethical attitudes and standards of those Poles who fought in the Home Army—which was the largest underground resistance army in Nazi-occupied Europe—we must go back to the interwar years, during which most of the members of the generation that was to form the core of the Home Army were born, for it was then that their personalities were formed and—perhaps above all—it was then that they acquired the particular ethos that they had in common. -

The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman (Początek)
The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman (Początek) Author: Andrzej Szczypiorski First Published: 1986 Translations: German (Die schöne Frau Seidenman, 1988); French (La jolie Madame Seidenman, 1988); Italian (La Bella Signora Seidenman, 1988); Danish (Den smukke fru Seidenmaneller Begyndelsen, 1989); Dutch (De mooie mevrouw Seidenman, 1989); Eng- lish (The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman, 1989); Norwegian (Begynnelsen, 1990); Swedish (Den vackra fru Seidenman, 1990); Hungarian (A szép Seidenmanné, 1991); Czech (Po- čátek, 1993); Finnish (Alku, 1994); Slovenian (Začetek, 1996); Spanish (La bella señora Seidenman: el comienzo, 2002). About the Author: Szczypiorski (1928–2000) was born to a well-educated family. His father organised an underground university during World War II and he was a mem- ber of the People’s Army (Armia Ludowa). For his participation in the Warsaw Upris- ing in 1944 he was arrested and detained in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. After the war, he worked for local newspapers and Polish Radio. His first literary produc- tions were released under the pseudonym Maurice St Andrew in Życie Literackie in 1952. After joining the Polish Communist Party in 1956, he worked as cultural attaché in the Polish embassy in Copenhagen and continued to publish feuilletons in numer- ous Polish magazines. He resigned from his membership in the party after the political crisis in 1968. He was forbidden to appear in public in 1969 and his texts were banned from 1972, but he continued writing in the literary underground (drugi obieg), wrote anonymously for opposition newspapers, and started working for the Polish exile monthly Kultura in Paris (Worsowicz, 2003). After his death, the right-wing media in particular discussed the evidence for Szczypiorski being a secret agent for the Polish Security Service in the 1940s (Kruczek, 2007). -

A Journey Through Polish Literature
A JOURNEY THROUGH POLISH LITERATURE European Literature 09 OCTOBRE 2013 GORA BERNADETTE Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996). How many of you know these four authors and know what they have in common, besides their nationalities? The four of them were awarded a Nobel Prize but nevertheless remain little known outside of Poland. How many of you can give the name of, at least, one polish contemporary author? These examples, among many others, prove that Polish literature remains unknown despite it being a big part of European literature. To start my presentation, I’d like you to have a look on this quotation by Czesław Miłosz who wrote, among other, a book about the History of Polish Literature (The History of Polish Literature, Berckeley,1969). In his work, he wrote “Polish literature focused more on drama and the poetic expression of the self than on fiction (which dominated the English-speaking world). The reasons find their roots on the historical circumstances of the nation.” Over a first phase, it thus seems important to start out with a broad overview of the general history of Polish literature throughout the ages before we can understand what happened during the 20th century, and fully understand the main references to the previous time periods which we can find today. In Polish literature, historical problems have always been an essential characteristic. One can notice that Polish literature has always been torn between its social duties and literary obligations. With this in mind, it is possible for me to offer you the promised journey through my national literature.
