This is a letterbook containing correspondence regarding the construction of the U.S. Post Office at Rolla, Missouri, 15 September 1913 -- 13 . Included are letterpress copies of letters from F. W. Pease, superintendent of construction at Springfield, Missouri, to the contractor, Robert McCaw, Jr., at Rolla.

The Rolla post office was located on the northeastern corner of Ninth and Pine in downtown Rolla. Postal employees occupied the building from 1915 to 1965, when a new post office was completed a few blocks to the southwest of the former site. The old building was occupied by the Rolla Free Public Library, which continues in that location to the present (1994).

There are approximately 190 items in the letterbook. The correspondence begins on 15 September 1913 with a letter by building superintendent F. W. Pease advising the contractor, Robert McCaw, Jr., that his proposal had been accepted. The correspondence, which indicates that McCaw actually began work before receiving official notification to proceed, continues through March 1915. Most of the correspondence is routine, dealing with minor changes in specifications, approval by the superintendent of building materials, and comments on various other facets of construction. The file ends on 13 March 1915 with a final report which summarizes the cost of the project and the amount due the contractor. r467 30 January 1990 Phelps County Historical Society Loaned for photocopying
