Traveling westward, they made stops in Hawaii, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, and New York City. The journal, correspondence, photographs, and postcards in the collection relate specifically to this trip. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Frances B. Kerridge on 29 April 1983 (Accession No. 4504). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Mary Dwight Eaman was born to Charles and Harriet Martin Eaman in Arizona Territory on 3 November 1888. She moved to Garden City, Kansas, at age 10. After her marriage on 16 May 1915 to Haden H. Bright, brother of Clarkson Joel Bright and Rella Bright Evans, she moved to Mildred, Montana. She had one daughter, Harriet Frances Bright (Kerridge). In 1936 they moved to Columbia, Missouri, and lived in Haden House on the Bright family farm. Mary died at age 93 in Columbia on 12 December 1981. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection gives a fascinating account of a trip around the world by a young school teacher and her elderly cousin. In the journal, which she kept daily, and the letters and postcards which she wrote to her parents, Mary Eaman not only described the places she visited, the people she saw, her travel companions, the food, accommodations, and transportation, but she also gave her reactions to the many new experiences. She delighted in her rides on elephants, camels, and donkeys and in her camping trips through the deserts of Egypt and Palestine. She commented on the people and events back home that her parents wrote about. Some of her letters were published by her hometown newspaper. Several of the letters in the collection were written by cousin Mary A. Eaman to Mary’s parents. The journal begins on 9 September 1912 as Mary left Kansas and ends on 6 September 1913 with her arrival in New York City. The correspondence dates from 10 September 1912 to 24 September 1913. Letters from April 1913 are missing. The correspondence is filed chronologically. The photographs and postcards are grouped geographically by country in the order in which she visited them. Tour programs, maps, receipts, menus, tickets, etc., are filed at the end of the collection.
