Its high point will be a recital by Miss Cecilia Bartoli, an artist who bringsjoy to lovers ofgreat singing everywhere and inspiration to aspiring young musicians. Her desire to be a part ofthis important event in the life ofthe school is very gratifying. With the consistent and generous support ofRice University and the Houston community, the Shepherd School is achieving international stature. Its faculty and graduates have enriched all ofthe musical institutions ofthis city and ofcountless others around the world with their talent, ski/4 and knowledge. Ourgoal for this Gala is to augment the Scholarship Endowment Fund, enabling the mostpromising young artists to continue coming here to study and to contribute to our musical life.

Ms. Bartoli and Mr. Thibaudet are exclusive to the Decca Record Company Ltd. World Management:]F Mastroianni Associates, Inc. New York City orn in Rome in 1966, Cecilia Bartoli attended the Con ervatorio di Santa Cecilia while al o rudying ith her parent , both professional singers. With her mother, ilvana Bazzoni, M . Bartoli perfected her vocal technique while with her father, Angelo Bartoli, she worked to deep n her mu ical interpretations. Ms. Bartoli's earliest opporrunites to perform before wide audi nces came first in an Italian national telecast devoted to presenting young arti ts, and then in a French national telecast dedicated to the memory of the late Maria Calla . Imm diately thereafter Ms. Bartoli was contacted by the late Maestro , who engaged her for the Bach B minor Mass at the 1990 Salzburg Easter Festival. At the same time there began a prolific collaboration with Maestro focu ing on the Mozart repertory- pecifically, the da Ponte trilogy. Thereafter, Ms. Bartoli's career developed internationally, bringing her into contact with many of the most prestigious internationa.l conductors, stage directors, and houses. Highlights include (Muti/Strehler) at , Cosij'an tutte (Mehta/Miller) at the Florence Maggio Musicale, Le nozze diFigaro (Harnoncourt/ Ponnelle) at the Zurich Opera, and (Chailly/ de Simone) at the Bologna Opera. Mo t recently, Ms. Bartoli has appeared a Zerlina in a new Barenboim/ Chereau production of Don Giovanni at the 1994 alzburg Festival, as Despina in a new Mutijde Simone production of Cosi .fan tutteat the Theater Ander Wien in aurumn 1994, and a new Harnoncourt/Flimm production of Haydn' Oljeo at the 1995 Wiener Fe twochen, which was televised by Austrian national television (ORF). In spring 1995 Ms. Bartoli was honored by France which conferr d upon her the title of "Chevalier of Arts and Letter ." Highlights of Cecilia Bartoli's 1995 and 1996 calendar include a summer recital tour of Argentina and Brazil, an autumn recital tour in Switzerland, followed by autumn recitals in the United States and Canada. Ms. Bartoli will make her debut in February 1996 as Despina in a new production of Cosz'.fan tutteconducted by Metropolitan Music Director ]arne Levine. M . Bartoli will also make her Carnegie Hall recital debut in March 1996 with Andras Schiff at the piano. he then take part in a Metropolitan Opera gala honoring Maestro Levine (scheduled for international television) before returning to Europe in pring 1996 for additional r cital as well as a revival of La Cenerentola in Zurich. In June 1996 Ms. Bartoli will appear in concert with Maestro Muti and the Filarmonica della Scala at the Musikverein, where she returns a featured soloist in autumn 1996 with Maestro Harnoncourt and the Concentu Mu icu . That autumn will al o find M . Bartoli performing in concert and in recital in Scandinavia as well as in other European capitals. Noted for her Rossini interpretations, Ms. Bartoli has been seen as Ro ina in Ros ini' I!Barbiere diSiviglia in Rome, Zurich, Barcelona, Lyon, and Hamburg, a well a in Hou ton and Dalla . A Angelina in La Cenerentola, Ms. Bartoli appeared in autumn 1994 in a new production by Cesare Lievi staged for her at the Zurich Opera. In the nited States, Hou ton Grand Opera will revive in autumn 1995 the de Simone production from Bologna (scheduled for international televi ion transmission and home video release in 1996). During the 1997-98 season, the Metropolitan Opera will mount a new production of La Cenerentola especially for Ms. Bartoli. The production, the fir tin the company's history, will be conducted by Maestro . In addition to the works of Mozart and Ro ini, Ms. Bartoli' repertory spans from Monteverdi to Ravel with particular attention centered on Vivaldi, Haydn, Bellini, and the Italian "Settecento" composers. Ms. Bartoli has appeared a soloist with the with Maestro , the with Sir , the Orchestre de Paris with Daniel Barenboim, London's Philharmonic with Giu eppe Sinopoli, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra with James Levine, the English Chamber Orchestra with]effreyTate, the Montreal Symphony with Charle Dutoit, and the Academy of t. Martin in the Field with Sir eville Marriner. Appearing with the latter M . Bartoli was the featured soloist in the inauguration of the 1994-95 Carnegie Hall eason ­ an event televi ed throughout North America. Ms. Bartoli is a noted r citalist throughout Europe, orth and outh America, and Japan. ot only doe s he regularly collaborate in recital with Gyorgy Fischer, teven Blier, and Jeff Cohen, but he al o enjoys special r lation hip in recital with noted soloists, such as Andras Schiff and conductors Myung-Whun Chung, James Levine, and Daniel Barenboim. Ms. Bartoli ha made a con iderable number of award-winning recordings for The Decca Record Company Ltd. , with which company she is an exclusive arti t. Recording of complete include Rossini's IIBarbiere di Siviglia (Patane) and La Cenerentola (Chailly), Mozart' La demenza di Tzto (Hagwood), and Puccini' Manon Lescaut(Levine). Ms. Bartoli's solo recordings include three albums ofRo sini: "Arias," "Songs," and "Heroines"; two albums of Mozart: "Arias" and "Por­ trait "; "Arie antiche" (edition Parisotti); and, in collaboration with Andras Schiff, an album ofltalian lieder by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, coupled with Haydn's cantata Arianna a Naxos. Ms. Bartoli has also recorded Pergolesi's StabatMater(Dutoit) and the Mozart in Vienna's t. Stefan's Cathedral with Maestro Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic, commemorating the 200th anniver ary of the compo er's death. The latter was also televised worldwide and relea ed a a home video. For other labels Ms. Bartoli has recorded Cost'fan tutte and Le nozze diFigaro (Barenboim/ Erato ), Mozart's LucioSt//a(Harnoncourt/Teldec), Ro sini's StabatMater(Bychkov/ Philips), Mozart's (Levine/ DG), as well as a second complete Le nozze diFigaro (Abbado/ DG). Future recordings include a second Rossini (Chung/ DG), Haydn' OJjeo (Hog­ wood/ Decca), Mozart's Don Gtovanni(Abbado/ DG), an album of songs by Berlioz, Bizet, Ravel, and Viardot with Maestro Chung (piano), an album of Bellini and Donizetti songs with Maestro Levine (piano), and an album ofSpani h ong with famed pianist Alicia de Larrocha. M . Bartoli will also make a recording of Mozart concert arias with Maestro Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic. All solo album are for the Decca Company Ltd. Cecilia Bartoli wa recently awarded the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Album for her "Italian Lieder" album with Mr. Schiff. Her discography has won numerous other critical awards including the Deutsche-Schallplatten Preise (Germany), La Stella d'oro (Italy), the Caect!ia Award (Belgium), the Diapason d'or Award (France) and "Best Opera Recording 1994" for La Cenerentola in Japan. In 1993 Ms. Bartoli had the singular distinction of simultaneously having five of her solo album among the top 15 be t elling cla ical album on the Bt!lboardchart in orthAmerica. Her latest recording of Mozart "Portraits" within the first six months of its release has sold over 200,000 copie in the United tates alone. Tzmenamed Ms. Bartoli the 1992 Top Recording Artist in both cla ical and popular categorie while MusicalAmerica named her "Singer of the Year." In 1993 she was recognized by the unique distinction of being named both Btl/board's "Artist of theYear " and "Top Selling Classical Artist" as well as "1994 Female Classical Artist of the Year" at the Classical Mu ical Awards in London. In autumn 1994 Newsweek published internationally an extensive interview with Ms. Bartoli who, in winter 1995 was the subject of an extended segment on the award-winning U.S./Australian televi­ sion program "60 Minute ." Mr. Thibaudet has participated in the poleto Festivals in the nited tates and Italy for thirteen cons cutive eason and ha perfprm d at the Proms of London for five. He ha al o been a regular guest of major festivals throughout the . . and around the world, including Ravinia, Tanglewood, the Hollywood Bowl, Blossom, Caramoor, Mann Music Centre, Istanbul, Prades, tavanger, Schleswig-Hal tein, Casal , and Adelaid . Highlight of Mr. Thibaudet' 1993-94 season includ d a tour with the Orchestre National de France, his return to Japan for an extensive concert tour, appear­ ances with the Cleveland Orchestra, the ational Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic Orche tra, Orch tre de Lyon, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic; and all-Ravel recitals at London's Wigmore Hall and in several U .. cities. At Lincoln Center he performed in recital with mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender as part of the Great Per­ former eries. Highlights ofJean- Yves Thibaudet's 1994-95 concert season included recitals in Lisbon, Taipei, ingapore, Paris, and Haifa, and at the t. Magnus Festival in the Orkney Islands in Scotland. He performed concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Dublin, th Hong Kong Philhar­ monic, the Scottish ational Orchestra, and the Ulster Orchestra. In orth An1erica, Mr. Thibaudet performed in recital in Boston, Houston, and Cincinnati, with the Cleveland Orche tra with Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Toronto Symphony, and the National Symphony withJiri Belohlavek; and at Lincoln Center with mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager. Substituting for an ailing Maria Tipo, Mr. Thibaudet was invited to perform Chopin s Piano Concerto o. 2 with Russian conductor Valery Gergi v and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in ovember 1994. Reviews from these last­ minute performances were rave, and audiences were ecstatic. For London Records, Mr. Thibaudet made a landmark two-CD set in 1992 of the complete piano work of Ravel, which won Germany' prestigiou Scha/lp/atten Preis and receiv d a Grammy nomination as well. For his debut album on the London/Decca label, Mr. Thibaudet joined the Montreal Symphony and Charles Dutoit in two Liszt concerti, coupled with the Totentanzand Hungarian Fantasy Gramophone lauded Mr. Thibaudet's "real feeling for the panache, devilry, and sheer seductive charm of the music." Other recordings include d'Indy's Symphony on a French Mountain Air with the Montreal Symphony and Dutoit; onatas for violin and piano by Debussy, Faure, and Franck with violinist Joshua Bell; Chaus on and Ravel with Mr. Bell, cellist Steven I serli , and th Takacs Quartet; and a recital album ofLiszt songs with Brigitte Fassbaender. Jean-Yves Thibaudet also recorded 's gigantic Turanga!t!a Symphony in 1992 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Chailly; the CD received the Edison Prize and th Diapason dOraward. His virtuosic disc ofLiszt opera transcription wa r leased to critical acclaim in January 1994, and a new disc with Ms. Fassbaender of Wolf's complete Manke Liederwas nominated for a 1993 Gramophone Award in the olo Vocal Category and also nominated for the Edison Prize. Other upcoming releases include recordings of Rachmaninoff's complete piano concerto with th Cleveland Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy, a solo album of el cted Brahms and Schumann piano works, and Debussy's complete piano work . A native of Lyon, Franc ,Jean-Yve Thibaudet began studying the piano atthe age of five and gave his first public performance at even. His principal studies were with Lucett Descaves, a friend and frequent musical collaborator of Ravel, and with Aldo Ciccolini at the Conservatoire de Pari , where he won the Premier Prix du Conservatoire at age fifteen.
