Who’s Who JACK SWANSON (UNITED STATES) TENOR

Jack Swanson is quickly becoming one of the most sought- after young in the opera world. His distinctive high lyric voice is known for singing the bravura arias of Rossini and the legato melodies of Donizetti. This season Swanson returned to the Norwegian Opera for Almaviva in a new production of Il barbiere di Siviglia and will perform the same role with Oper Köln before returning to the Opera for two new roles: the title role in Rossini’s Le comte Ory and the Italian Singer in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. In addition, he will make his debut in August at the in Pesaro, Italy. In concert he will be heard as the tenor soloist in Rossini’s with Myung-Whun Chung and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Earlier this season he also appeared in solo recital with Malcolm Martineau in Frankfurt. Future engagements include stage debuts with HGO and the Opéra National du Rhin and returns to the Santa Fe Opera and the Oper Frankfurt. Last season brought Swanson to two new stages in new roles: first in Frankfurt as Rodrigo in a new production of Rossini’s , then as Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Opera Omaha. In concert, the tenor was heard in Paris in Rossini’s Messa di Gloria and at New York’s Alice Tully Hall for a concert of pieces by sons of J.S. Bach.

RICHARD BADO (UNITED STATES) The Sarah and Ernest Butler Chorus Master Chair PIANO

HGO Studio alumnus Richard Bado is director of artistic operations and chorus master at HGO. He made his profes- sional conducting debut in 1989 leading HGO’s acclaimed production of Show Boat at the newly restored Cairo Opera House in Egypt. Since then, he has conducted for Houston Ballet, , Opéra national de Paris, , the Aspen Music Festival, Tulsa Opera, the Russian National Orchestra, the Florida Philharmonic, the Montreal Symphony, and Wolf Trap Opera. With HGO, he has conducted Carousel (2016) and Robert Wilson’s production of Four Saints in Three Acts at the Edinburgh Festival (1996). An accomplished pianist, Bado appears regu- larly with Renée Fleming in recital. He has also played for , Frederica von Stade, Susan Graham, Denyce Graves, , Ramón Vargas, , Jamie Barton, Ryan McKinny, and Nathan Gunn. Bado holds music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he received the 2000 Alumni Achievement Award, and West Virginia University; he also studied advanced choral conducting with Robert Shaw. He has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. For 12 years, he was the director of the opera studies program at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He has served on the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Dolora Zajick Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, the International Vocal School in Moscow, and the Texas Music Festival, and has served on the music staffs of the , , the Bolshoi Opera Young Artist Program, Opera Australia, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Utah Opera, Chautauqua Opera, and Wolf Trap Opera. He regularly judges for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He received HGO’s Silver Rose Award in 2013 in celebration of his 25th year as chorus master.
