Nightingale's 14 pioneering care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War catapulted her into the public eye, making her a national cultural icon and an exemplar of female virtue. Through the art of photography he rose to become one of the great observers of the Twentieth Century. 18.30 Screening A Bigger Picture (Dir. Bruno Wolheim, 2010) £10/£8 Filmed over three years, David Hockney: A Bigger Picture captures David Hockney's return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood. It follows his move away from photography to find renewal in nature, working outside for the first time, through the seasons and in all weathers.

Thurs 18 13.15 Lunchtime Lecture Six Wives and their Wardrobes: Power Dressing at the Court of Henry VIII with Jacqui Ansell £4/£3 The six wives of Henry VIII have (perhaps more than any women in history) been defined in terms of their husband. Taking her cue from the highly successful show SIX the Musical, art historian Jacqui Ansell will turn the spotlight on each woman to explore the ways in which their stories have been told on stage and screen. Jacqui will decode the dynamics of dress at the Tudor court, drawing upon contemporary depictions with a particular focus on the work of great artist Hans Holbein.

18.30 Life Drawing Drawing from Hockney with Robin-Lee Hall £10/£8 To coincide with the current major exhibition David Hockney: Drawing from Life, this Life Drawing session with artist Robin- Lee Hall explores the techniques, draughtsmanship and varied drawing materials used by David Hockney over the years. During the session, Robin will be drawing on her iPad to demonstrate Hockney’s different approaches to drawing the figure.

Inspiring People

Make History From 29 June 2020 the Gallery in St Martin’s Place will temporarily close while essential building works for the Inspiring People project take place. The transformed Gallery, designed by Jamie Fobert Architects, will reopen in spring 20203 with a comprehensive re-display of the Collection, significant refurbishment of the building and new public spaces including a more welcoming visitor entrance, public forecourt and state of the art Learning Centre.

The Collection during closure Key works from the Gallery’s Collection will remain on public display through a diverse series of nationwide collaborations and partnerships. The Gallery will continue to grow its international touring programme, and the public can also explore the Gallery’s Collection online at npg.org.uk
