Media information 22 September 2016 1920s JAZZ AGE Fashion & Photographs 23 September 2016 – 15 January 2017 The Fashion and Textile Museum presents JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs, a major exhibition of 1920s garments alongside portraits by James Abbe. • 1920s JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs presents a glittering display of over 150 haute couture and ready-to-wear garments from 1919 to 1929. • Photographs by James Abbe (1883–1973), film excerpts and magazines highlight the role of graphic art and photography in promoting the 20s look • A Decade of Change is documented through shifting hemlines, waistlines and accessories, from hats to hairbrushes, stockings to cigarette holders. • Four outfits from The Great Gatsby film (2013) by Catherine Martin with Miuccia Prada highlight contemporary fascination with the decade Women’s clothing in the 1920s reflected dizzying social change on an unprecedented scale. From Paris and London to New York and Hollywood, the period following the Great War offered the modern woman a completely new style of dressing. With over 150 garments and accessories from a major private collection, this stunning selection of sportswear, printed day dresses, fringed flapper dresses, beaded evening wear, velvet capes, kimonos and silk pyjamas reveals the glamour, excess, frivolity and modernity of the decade. The exhibition focuses not only on high-end couture but also on the ready-made. It offers a reassessment of the 1920s by showcasing the wide variety of clothing and accessories available to the modern woman, not just the drop-waisted flapper dress immediately associated with the era. Throughout, the exhibition highlights the decade’s changing silhouette including the straighter less exaggerated shape, promoted by haute couture designers such as Lucile and Paul Poiret since the pre-war years, the rising hemline and clothes designed to 1 allow free movement.

  • Body As Crisis
CHAPTER II It is monstrosity, not death, that is the counter- value to life Georges Canguilhem, Monstrosity and the Monstrous … In the middle, cadaverous, awful, lay the grey puddle in the courtyard … I came to the puddle. I could not cross it. Identity failed me Virginia Woolf, The Waves Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman both present the wounded flesh. But while Kahlo showed chronic pain as a result of tissue damage, Sherman’s art can be read as a symptom of pain, a reflection of a mental state. While Kahlo painted perpetual pain accompanying her all her life, Sherman shows pain as a structural instability, the blurring of the boundaries of stereotyped femininity. Like her own artistic persona, pain in Sherman’s work is de-individualized; it might just as well be the pain of an author, a model, a character or a viewer. Abandoning any claim on notions such as authorship or intentionality, Sherman disowns – but does not disembody – pain. Pain in Sherman’s art changes the body in the same way that emotional crisis watermarks the identity. Sherman never shows her characters as what is widely understood as idealized figures. Her art forms the counterpart to the American cult of the well-functioning, toned-down body, where any memory of pain had been erased. Pain denied elsewhere here becomes pain transformed into monstrosity, nausea, pathology, hysteria, and disguise. Sherman’s photographs force the viewer to acknowledge the amount of pain constituting the female subject. I am interested in the discursive exchange between feminist and psychoanalytic theories and visual images where Sherman’s art is concerned.

  • This Book Is a Compendium of New Wave Posters. It Is Organized Around the Designers (At Last!)
“This book is a compendium of new wave posters. It is organized around the designers (at last!). It emphasizes the key contribution of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe, and beyond. And it is a very timely volume, assembled with R|A|P’s usual flair, style and understanding.” –CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, FROM THE INTRODUCTION 2 artbook.com French New Wave A Revolution in Design Edited by Tony Nourmand. Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave. Artists presented in this volume include Jean-Michel Folon, Boris Grinsson, Waldemar Świerzy, Christian Broutin, Tomasz Rumiński, Hans Hillman, Georges Allard, René Ferracci, Bruno Rehak, Zdeněk Ziegler, Miroslav Vystrcil, Peter Strausfeld, Maciej Hibner, Andrzej Krajewski, Maciej Zbikowski, Josef Vylet’al, Sandro Simeoni, Averardo Ciriello, Marcello Colizzi and many more.

This indicates not only the museum’s burgeoning interest in other cultural forms but the acceptance of fashion photography into specific art contexts. This thesis examines two recent exhibitions of contemporary fashion photography: “Fashioning Fiction in Photography Since 1990” at the Museum of Modern Art (April 16- June 28, 2004), the first exhibition of fashion photography at a major North American museum of art, and “Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now” at the International Center of Photography (January 16, 2009-May 3, 2009).

Paley, chairman of the Board of Trustees, The Museum of Modern Art, stated, "We are both grateful and proud that the Hasselblad Foundation has made this extraordinary gift. We are grateful for what it enables our Study Center to do. We are proud of the international recognition it represents. Although the Department of Photography has maintained a study center since 1964, its greatly expanded new facility is named in honor of the Hasselblads, as a gesture of gratitude to the Foundation that bears their names. • The Photograph Collector Information, Opinion, and Advice for Collectors, Curators, and Dealers N E W S L T R
THE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTOR INFORMATION, OPINION, AND ADVICE FOR COLLECTORS, CURATORS, AND DEALERS N E W S L T R Volume XLI, Nos. 7 & 8 Summer 2020 AUCTION REPORTS AND PREVIEWS IN THE AGE OF COVID-19 by Stephen Perloff Edward Burtynsky: Colorado River Delta #2, Near San Felipe, Baja, Mexico, 2011 ($15,000–$25,000) sold well above estimate for $52,500 at Christie’s, New York City. SPRING AUCTION REPORT continued Peter Beard: But past who can recall or done undo (Paradise Lost), 1977 ($70,000–$100,000) found a buyer at $118,750 at Christie’s, New York City. Christie’s online Photographs sale ending June 3 totaled $2,422,125 with a 50% buy-in rate. There were a few good results, but overall this must have been a disappointment to both Chris- tie’s and its consignors. In these unprecedented times this is not a reflection of just Christie’s, but a sober reflection on the state of the photography market. Clearly safe bets like Irving Penn and Peter Beard were at the top of the heap, but at prices well below the highs of just a year or two ago. Still, it is heartening to see that Penn’s Small Trades series is getting the recognition that his other series have had. The top ten were: • Peter Beard: But past who can recall or done undo (Paradise Lost), 1977 ($70,000– $100,000) at $118,750 • Irving Penn: Rag and Bone Man, London, 1951 ($40,000–$60,000) at $106,250 Irving Penn: Rag and Bone Man, London, 1951 IN THIS ISSUE ($40,000–$60,000) collected a bid of $106,250 at Christie’s, New York City.
