He also achieved a PhD degree at Middlesex University. He was a member of the Crafts Council and the editor of Ceramic Review. Since 1999, he was visiting Professor of Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art. He was the author of many books on ceramics, including his definitive biography of Bernard Leach that was published in 2003 (Yale University Press), and was also the editor of The Ceramics Book, published in 2006. In the early 1970s, he was also a cofounder of the Gay Left collective, and remained a prominent LGBT rights campaigner throughout his life. He also published several studies of LGBT art, including The Sexual Perspective and Fully Exposed: The Male Nude in Photography. As a potter, Cooper's work falls into one of two general forms. In the first his vessels are heavily glazed in a volcanic form. The vessels, as a result of this heavy glazing, derive a lot of their appeal from their varied and uneven textures. In their most simple form they are very reminiscent of work by Lucie Rie. In their more extravagant forms though the vessels can be banded or use incredibly vivid colours to great effect including pink, vibrant yellow and deep reds and blues. His other form of work is much simpler in style using plain glazes, often in egg yolk yellow, occasionally spotted with gold flecks. His work can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Scottish Museum, as well as in many private collections. He was awarded an OBE for services to art. Mark Waugh (MW): Welcome, and we’re live again at DACS, this time from RIBA, and we’re live with a specific question, it’s quite a simple question – “Who Owns the Art World?” And to answer that, what we’re going to have three presentations, one from Richard Parry, one from Hayley Newman and one from Morgan Quaintance. They come from very particular positions and I think you’ll be able to understand what those positions are after the presentations. Essentially, all three of them share a discourtesy of concern with that question of ownership - and not only the ownership of the art world in a conceptual and a material sense - but also in what the role and agency of the artist is, and indeed, art is, in that context.     S CR IPT RICHARD CALDICOTT Richard Caldicott Script Maximum difference: Repetition and transformation, precision and intuition, in the work of Richard Caldicott Derek Horton One of the many achievements of the 2004 exhibition, A Minimal Future? Art As Object, 1958–1968 in Los Angeles,1 was to give some prominence to John Chamberlain’s ‘Rock and Roller’ paintings from the mid 1960’s. Named after performers of the time from the Beach Boys to the Shangri-Las, Chamberlain made over fifty of them between 1963 and 1965. Small, flat and contemplative, they are the antithesis of the monumental welded sculptures made by assembling and spray-painting twisted and dented automobile panels for which Chamberlain is much more well known. Built up of as many as a hundred layers of transparent colour, the paintings use the medium of sprayed lacquer too, but applied to flat square panels of masonite or formica to form variations on a square grid pattern, with a simplicity of form that is in direct contrast to the richness, subtlety and depth of their colour. Several aspects of these paintings are significant to my response to Richard Caldicott’s latest work, and all have to do with repetition and its capacity to generate difference: their repeated grid structure; their serial production, and their manipulation of multiple transparent layers to create translucent blocks of colour. “What would life be like if there was no repetition?” asked the 19th century philosopher Kierkegaard,2 and subsequently the productive relationship of repetition and difference has itself repeatedly occurred as an important field of exploration for many practices rooted in modernity and modernism.

    Hungary for Culture Charles Saumarez Smith takes issue with the line of Brian (Sewell) and looks forward to the Royal Academy’s Treasures from Budapest exhibition My article in the last issue of Finch’s Quarterly about the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition achieved a modest degree of fame by being quoted in Brian Sewell’s review of this year’s exhibition in the Evening Standard: As its chief executive put it in the current edition of a journal of which he is arts editor, the Academy holds “the 18th-century view that the best judges of art are not the critics but the public. Critics may sneer, but the public continues to enjoy the Summer Exhibition precisely because it gives them an opportunity to make up their own minds about what to like.” Sewell went on to say: The public can make up its mind about fish and chips and jellied eels, but to put it in charge of the kitchens of The Ritz would not be wise. And I am less sure that Charles Saumarez Smith’s contempt for critics was widely held anywhere in Europe in the 18th century, the Age of Reason, when the Enlightenment held sway; and even if it were, then the public to which he refers was not the ancestor of some bloke on the Clapham bendy-bus, but an educated gentleman with the benefits of private tutoring, Eton, Oxbridge and the Grand Tour, as ready with a Greek or Latin tag as our beloved Boris Johnson. The chief executive will find little of that background among the old biddies from Berkshire up for the day.

    Media information 22 September 2016 1920s JAZZ AGE Fashion & Photographs 23 September 2016 – 15 January 2017 The Fashion and Textile Museum presents JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs, a major exhibition of 1920s garments alongside portraits by James Abbe. • 1920s JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs presents a glittering display of over 150 haute couture and ready-to-wear garments from 1919 to 1929. • Photographs by James Abbe (1883–1973), film excerpts and magazines highlight the role of graphic art and photography in promoting the 20s look • A Decade of Change is documented through shifting hemlines, waistlines and accessories, from hats to hairbrushes, stockings to cigarette holders. • Four outfits from The Great Gatsby film (2013) by Catherine Martin with Miuccia Prada highlight contemporary fascination with the decade Women’s clothing in the 1920s reflected dizzying social change on an unprecedented scale. From Paris and London to New York and Hollywood, the period following the Great War offered the modern woman a completely new style of dressing. With over 150 garments and accessories from a major private collection, this stunning selection of sportswear, printed day dresses, fringed flapper dresses, beaded evening wear, velvet capes, kimonos and silk pyjamas reveals the glamour, excess, frivolity and modernity of the decade. The exhibition focuses not only on high-end couture but also on the ready-made. It offers a reassessment of the 1920s by showcasing the wide variety of clothing and accessories available to the modern woman, not just the drop-waisted flapper dress immediately associated with the era. Throughout, the exhibition highlights the decade’s changing silhouette including the straighter less exaggerated shape, promoted by haute couture designers such as Lucile and Paul Poiret since the pre-war years, the rising hemline and clothes designed to 1 allow free movement.
