Media information 22 September 2016 1920s JAZZ AGE Fashion & Photographs 23 September 2016 – 15 January 2017 The Fashion and Textile Museum presents JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs, a major exhibition of 1920s garments alongside portraits by James Abbe. • 1920s JAZZ AGE: Fashion & Photographs presents a glittering display of over 150 haute couture and ready-to-wear garments from 1919 to 1929. • Photographs by James Abbe (1883–1973), film excerpts and magazines highlight the role of graphic art and photography in promoting the 20s look • A Decade of Change is documented through shifting hemlines, waistlines and accessories, from hats to hairbrushes, stockings to cigarette holders. • Four outfits from The Great Gatsby film (2013) by Catherine Martin with Miuccia Prada highlight contemporary fascination with the decade Women’s clothing in the 1920s reflected dizzying social change on an unprecedented scale. From Paris and London to New York and Hollywood, the period following the Great War offered the modern woman a completely new style of dressing. With over 150 garments and accessories from a major private collection, this stunning selection of sportswear, printed day dresses, fringed flapper dresses, beaded evening wear, velvet capes, kimonos and silk pyjamas reveals the glamour, excess, frivolity and modernity of the decade. The exhibition focuses not only on high-end couture but also on the ready-made. It offers a reassessment of the 1920s by showcasing the wide variety of clothing and accessories available to the modern woman, not just the drop-waisted flapper dress immediately associated with the era. Throughout, the exhibition highlights the decade’s changing silhouette including the straighter less exaggerated shape, promoted by haute couture designers such as Lucile and Paul Poiret since the pre-war years, the rising hemline and clothes designed to 1 allow free movement. -

He also achieved a PhD degree at Middlesex University. He was a member of the Crafts Council and the editor of Ceramic Review. Since 1999, he was visiting Professor of Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art. He was the author of many books on ceramics, including his definitive biography of Bernard Leach that was published in 2003 (Yale University Press), and was also the editor of The Ceramics Book, published in 2006. In the early 1970s, he was also a cofounder of the Gay Left collective, and remained a prominent LGBT rights campaigner throughout his life. He also published several studies of LGBT art, including The Sexual Perspective and Fully Exposed: The Male Nude in Photography. As a potter, Cooper's work falls into one of two general forms. In the first his vessels are heavily glazed in a volcanic form. -

This major new exhibition explores the extravagant world of the glamorous and stylish ‘Bright Young Things’ of the twenties and thirties, seen through the eye of renowned British photographer Cecil Beaton. It brings to life a deliriously eccentric, glamorous and creative era of British cultural life, combining High Society and the avant-garde, artists and writers, socialites and partygoers. Take inspiration from the exhibition and enter our competition to showcase today’s ‘Bright Young Things’. Below the cathedral in the foreground, the black outline of a row of buildings is discernible. Only the facades remain, the interiors destroyed by fires that now illuminate the spaces where windows were. These are the most prominent features of Herbert Mason’s photograph of London during the Blitz, taken on December 29, 1940. -

VERSION 2 Map Entrance Contents TBC Introduction Cecil Beaton (1904–80) was one of the great creative figures of the British twentieth century. Chiefly known as a photographer of portraits and fashion, through his work for Vogue magazine from 1924 to 1979, he was also recognised as a significant war photographer. An illustrator and caricaturist, a writer and commentator on taste and manners, Beaton was a theatre designer and art director of world renown and an influential stylist of his own homes. This exhibition focuses on Beaton’s early years. Born in Hampstead to a then prosperous timber merchant, Ernest Beaton and his wife Esther (‘Etty’), Cecil was first given a camera in 1914, aged ten. His first subjects were his mother and his willing sisters, Nancy and Barbara (‘Baba’). His transformation from middle-class suburban schoolboy to dazzling society figure against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties and the Age of Jazz revealed a social mobility barely thinkable before the First World War. Here, then, are the Bright Young Things who brought an extraordinary era vividly to life and in so doing, nurtured and refined a remarkable photographic talent. The strength of his singular vision is such that, when we think of the Bright Young Things, we think of them in Beaton’s costumes, through Beaton’s lens and as Beaton’s friends. Wrench Postcards of St. Paul's Churchyard
WRENCH POSTCARDS OF ST. PAUL’S CHURCHYARD Dave Hill John Evelyn Wrench did not produce postcards for very long, from 1900 until 1906. Upon leaving Eton he made a Continental tour and admired the quality of German cards. When he returned to London he selected photographs and placed orders with a German printer for postcards. He was just 18 years old. I collect his postcards of London as they show views of streets that are a little different, as most other cards just show the usual tourist landmarks. James Spence & Co. Hitchcock Williams & Co Judge this from these two cards, the first one is captioned St. Paul’s Churchyard, at the Ludgate end. The tall building just in picture on the right hand side is the cathedral itself, out of picture is the main entrance and steps. In the centre of the image are 1897 - 1915 the shop premises of Hitchcock, Williams & Co who were users of a great number of perfins including probably HW/&Co - H7710.01M. This was only one of their many addresses in London. In Bulletin 394 Richard Husband wrote an excellent article on Dickens & Jones which also covered the H7710.01M perfins used by Hitchcock, Williams so I won’t cover them here. Bulletin 413 (April 2018) Page 18 On the left side of the postcard you can see the premises of James Spence & Co. silk mercers who also used perfins 1875 - 1915 with just one die identified to date J.S/&Co - J6980.02. The second card is captioned St Paul’s Churchyard, Cheapside end. -

Special Collections and Archives Ref: Special Collection Title: Innes Smith Collection Scope: Books on the history of medicine, many of medical biography, dating from the 16th to the early 20th centuries Dates: 1548-1932 Extent: 330 vols. Name of creator: Robert William Innes Smith Administrative / biographical history: Robert William Innes Smith (1872-1933) was a graduate in medicine of Edinburgh University and a general practitioner for thirty three years in the Brightside district of Sheffield. His strong interest in medical history and art brought him some acclaim, and his study of English-speaking students of medicine at the University of Leyden, published in 1932, is regarded as a model of its kind. Locally in Sheffield Innes Smith was highly respected as both medical man and scholar: his pioneer work in the organisation of ambulance services and first-aid stations in the larger steel works made him many friends. On Innes Smith’s death part of his large collection of books and portraits was acquired for the University. The original library is listed in a family inventory: Catalogue of the library of R.W. Innes-Smith. There were at that time some 600 volumes, but some items were sold at auction or to booksellers. The residue of the book collection in this University Library numbers 305, ranging in date from the early 16th century to the early 20th, all bearing the somewhat macabre Innes Smith bookplate.
