  • Wrench Postcards of St. Paul's Churchyard
    WRENCH POSTCARDS OF ST. PAUL’S CHURCHYARD Dave Hill John Evelyn Wrench did not produce postcards for very long, from 1900 until 1906. Upon leaving Eton he made a Continental tour and admired the quality of German cards. When he returned to London he selected photographs and placed orders with a German printer for postcards. He was just 18 years old. I collect his postcards of London as they show views of streets that are a little different, as most other cards just show the usual tourist landmarks. James Spence & Co. Hitchcock Williams & Co Judge this from these two cards, the first one is captioned St. Paul’s Churchyard, at the Ludgate end. The tall building just in picture on the right hand side is the cathedral itself, out of picture is the main entrance and steps. In the centre of the image are 1897 - 1915 the shop premises of Hitchcock, Williams & Co who were users of a great number of perfins including probably HW/&Co - H7710.01M. This was only one of their many addresses in London. In Bulletin 394 Richard Husband wrote an excellent article on Dickens & Jones which also covered the H7710.01M perfins used by Hitchcock, Williams so I won’t cover them here. Bulletin 413 (April 2018) Page 18 On the left side of the postcard you can see the premises of James Spence & Co. silk mercers who also used perfins 1875 - 1915 with just one die identified to date J.S/&Co - J6980.02. The second card is captioned St Paul’s Churchyard, Cheapside end.

Special Collections and Archives Ref: Special Collection Title: Innes Smith Collection Scope: Books on the history of medicine, many of medical biography, dating from the 16th to the early 20th centuries Dates: 1548-1932 Extent: 330 vols. Name of creator: Robert William Innes Smith Administrative / biographical history: Robert William Innes Smith (1872-1933) was a graduate in medicine of Edinburgh University and a general practitioner for thirty three years in the Brightside district of Sheffield. His strong interest in medical history and art brought him some acclaim, and his study of English-speaking students of medicine at the University of Leyden, published in 1932, is regarded as a model of its kind. Locally in Sheffield Innes Smith was highly respected as both medical man and scholar: his pioneer work in the organisation of ambulance services and first-aid stations in the larger steel works made him many friends. On Innes Smith’s death part of his large collection of books and portraits was acquired for the University. The original library is listed in a family inventory: Catalogue of the library of R.W. Innes-Smith. There were at that time some 600 volumes, but some items were sold at auction or to booksellers. The residue of the book collection in this University Library numbers 305, ranging in date from the early 16th century to the early 20th, all bearing the somewhat macabre Innes Smith bookplate. How about once the Blitz started? 8) Taking shelter during the bombings wasn’t always comfortable or convenient as Anderson shelters were cramped and flooded easily and the tube stations were crowded, smelly and loud. Do you think you would still take shelter every night or eventually just chance it in the comfort of your own bed? 9) Dance halls were enormously popular during the war in London, even on through the Blitz. Do you think you would go to a dance hall while bombs were falling? 10) Food rationing meant cooking staples like butter, sugar and meat were in short supply.

A network of public highways existed to the north of Saint Paul’s Cathedral from the Saxon resettlement of the City until the early 1960s, when the area was comprehensively redeveloped. In replacement for these ancient streets and footpaths, which were built upon, the Paternoster Row development that was completed in 1967 had a network of ground-level and high-level city walkways declared through it. 2. The Paternoster Row development was demolished in the early 2000s and a replacement development incorporating a pedestrian square and ground-level pedestrian passages was completed in 2003. This estate is known as Paternoster Square. It consists of Paternoster Square, Paternoster Lane, Paternoster Row, Canon Alley, Queen’s Head Passage, Rose Street and White Hart Street and the adjoining buildings.

Anderson <1> In 1849, prominent reformer and liberal historian Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote, “Those who compare the age on which their lot has fallen with a golden age which exists only in their imagination may talk of degeneracy and decay: but no man who is correctly informed as to the past will be disposed to take a morose or desponding view of the present.”[1] A century later, his grandniece Rose Macaulay, renowned novelist, scholar, broadcaster and critic, responded to his epic narrative of humanist progress with a war-weary rebuttal. Her novel The World My Wilderness (1950) and her later treatise The Pleasure of Ruins (1953) together present an a posteriori study of the human condition, as coloured by the physical devastation and rhetorical fragmentation of the Blitz on London. In these works, Macaulay discards any attempts to read British history as progressive or unified, undermining London’s state-sanctioned status as “The New Jerusalem” by instead detailing the “orts, scraps and fragments” (as Woolf would have it) of a very specific, pedestrian, ruinous cityscape. This paper will examine Macaulay’s anti-romantic geographies, suggesting that her mode is at once elegiac and ironic and that her writings together seek a more authentic vision of London’s history, a vision predicated not on bombast and heroism but on lived practice and artefactual record.

    Visualizing Wartime Destruction and Postwar Reconstruction: Herbert Mason ’s Photograph of St. Paul ’s Reevaluated* Tom Allbeson Swansea University In the center of the photograph is the dome of St. Paul ’s, the grey soot-stained building contrasted with the white smoke surrounding it. Below the cathedral in the foreground, the black outline of a row of bu ildings is discernible. Only the facades remain, the interiors destroyed by fires that now illuminate the spaces where windows were. These are the most prominent features of Herbert Mason ’s photograph of London during the Blitz, taken on December 29, 1940. For many, a verbal description alone is enough to recall this photograph taken seventy- five years ago. When the Blitz is discussed, the image is frequently reproduced; when the image is discussed, the term “iconic ” is usually invoked. Mason, born in 1903, the son of a commercial photographer, was working for Associated Newspapers at the time. After the Blitz, he became an of ficial photographer in the Royal Navy, sailing to Murmansk with Russian convoys as well as to Malta and Sicily. 1 However, none of Mason ’s photographs approached the prominence achieved by his depiction of St. Paul ’s, first published in the Daily Mail on December 31, 1940 fig. 1 . Within a month of its creation, it was repro- duced in the Illustrated Londonð NewsÞ , the Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung , Life , and even the journal of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. Within a year, it had been used in numerous photo-books. Today, looking for an apt cover image, publishers of both popular and scholarly literature on the Blitz frequently reach for Mason ’s photograph.
