MUSEUMS AND THE FUTURE OF UK NUMISMATICS A conference to mark the 150th anniversary of the ’s Department of and

Stevenson Lecture Theatre, British Museum, Friday 18 February 2011

This conference will use the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the British Museum’s Department of Coins and Medals to highlight aspirations and ideas for the role museums can play in furthering numismatics over the coming years. It will examine ways in which the potential of numismatic collections can be unlocked to the advantage of both specialists and the general public, thereby furthering our knowledge and understanding of the past – and, by extension, the present.

The conference will be of interest to: - museum curators whose collections include coins and medals (including those with little or no numismatic expertise); - from within museums and the broader academic community; - Finds Liaison Officers within Portable Antiquities; - scholars from disciplines such as art history, economic history and archaeology interested in discovering how numismatics can help them in their studies; - collectors of coins and medals; - and indeed anyone with an interest in future directions for the study of and medals.
