The American Numismatic Society is pleased to announce the limited edition of the ANS Medal honoring numismatist Q. David Bowers. The medal will be minted in both silver and bronze and will be available only by subscription until October 31, 2010
In 2006 the ANS honored Q. David Bowers for his contributions to numismatic scholarship and for pro- moting coin collecting to a broad and growing audience. Bowers was awarded a uniface medal, designed by Alexander Shagin, which is being issued by popular demand as a two-sided medal. The medal is available by subscription only in both silver and bronze until October 31, 2010. After the close date of October 31, 2010 the dies will be placed in the ANS collections and there will be no further editons of the medal.

Internationally acclaimed coin and medal designer, Alexander Shagin, is the recipient of the 1995 J. Sanford Saltus Medal Award for distinguished achievement in the field of the art of the medal. Shagin fuses the classical tradition in numismatic art with contempo- rary concepts of space, form and the dimension of time. His works celebrate “the hand- held mini-monument which can be prominently displayed on office desks, book shelves or coffee tables.” Alexander Shagin graduated from the Vera Mukhina Academy of Art and Design in Len- ingrad and spent five years creating commemorative coins and medals for the Leningrad Mint before emigrating to the United States. Since the 1980’s Alexander has resided in California where he practices the art of medal-making. Peter the Great, Michelangelo, Apollo-Soyuz and the Moscow Olympics are but a few of his designs. His works are included in museums and private collections nationally and around the world, including the Hermitage Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, Yad Vashem Museum, the British Museum and the Swedish Royal Medallic Collection.
