Is it kosher to Zoom your Seder?

Shalom Chaverim,

As spring approaches, there is much to look forward to. People are starting to receive the Coronavirus vaccine, and AKSE has a new ADAS KODESCH beautiful permanent home. Though we are anxious to start using our SHEL EMETH new home, clearly we will not be able to host community Sedarim 2412 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seders) this coming Pesach due to the pandemic. Moreover, the need Wilmington, DE 19806 to maintain social distance is particularly problematical over Pesach Mailing Address because it limits our ability to join with family and friends for the PO BOX 7305 Sedarim. Wilmington, DE 19803-7305 Prior to last Pesach, the Iggud Chachmei HaMaarav (Association of

Synagogue Office (302) 762-2705 Sages of the West), which is a group of Sephardic Orthodox rabbis mainly of Moroccan origin in , allowed people to livestream or E-mail to [email protected] Zoom seders over Pesach. They ruled that if you turn on the computer AKSE Website www.AKSE.org before Yom Tov, you could livestream the seder. This sounds like a

Steven Saks, Rabbi nice compassionate hora’at sha’ah emergency ruling to help people Yehoshua Redfern, Cantor deal with the problems the coronavirus is causing; maybe even an act of pikuach nefesh, sparing people from the horrible pain that isolation OFFICERS causes. Yet, this ruling was slammed across the board in the observant Alan Bleier, President world and even by the decidedly non-orthodox Hadar.

Max Rosenberg, Executive VP During last year's day one sermon, I addressed the issue Martin Cohn, VP Finance of the use of electricity on Shabbat and Yom Tov. My sermon can be Harriet Ainbinder, VP Education viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78bGQ98sSaw&f.

Vivian Goldberg, VP Religious Affairs Though I applaud the compassion of Iggud Chachmei HaMaarav, I Dianne Seidel, VP Administration must agree with the vast majority who felt that the heter (rabbinic Lena Elzufon, VP Membership permission to livestream the Seder) was too broad. I prefer the approach Mark Wagman, VP Community Affairs of the Rabbinic Council of Bergen County. They said they would not issue a blanket heter, a blanket permission for people to livestream or Open, VP Ways & Means Zoom the seder, but rather they would tell you to consult with your Max Rosenberg, Treasurer individual rabbi for a p’sak, a ruling based on your specific David Epstein & Lisa Elliott Secretaries circumstances. So a person may go to their rabbi, tell the rabbi his or

her circumstances, and the rabbi may say turn your computer on before Len Seltzer Yom Tov and you can engage in a Zoom live seder. That same rabbi

Men’s Club President may hear someone else’s circumstances and say, “sorry, I can’t give

you permission.” Sylvia Wagman

Sisterhood Advisor The reason I prefer this approach is demonstrated by an old beer

commercial. A guy is sitting on a tropical beach oasis with his beer, and STAFF then in the background a message for work comes on saying “if you have anything you want me to hear about please send me an email at Sharon Marshall, Office Manager xyz blah blah blah blah blah.” In other words, he is not really interested Kathleen Taylor, Bookkeeper in receiving your message about work because he’s on vacation. That vacation oasis is his Shabbat/Yom Tov. The rabbis who oppose the The Shofar is published 11 months: heter are saying: if we allow electricity, our oasis in time, which is September through July/August. Shabbat/Yom Tov, will be intruded upon constantly by electronics, and

Jonathan Jaffe Shofar Editor it will damage that oasis permanently. As many of us have experienced, Mark Wagman Asst. Editor once you are connected electronically, it becomes impossible to escape E-mail to [email protected] (Continued on page 4)

work and other obligations without a Shabbat/Yom Tov. What is at stake here is the nature of Shabbat/Yom Tov for us moderns. Every time the phone vibrates that shabbat menuchah, that shabbat rest, will be intruded upon.

The approach of the Rabbinic Council of Bergen County is preferable because it preserves Shabbat/Yom Tov as protected time while giving us the flexibility to be lenient, that is allowing for livestreaming or Zooming of the Seder on a case-by-case basis.

While I realize that many in the Jewish world will simply use Zoom at the Seder, I urge you to speak to me privately to obtain a heter (rabbinic permission) to do so. The heter will allow you to livestream or Zoom the seder with a rabbinic stamp of approval.

Please note that, even with such a stamp of approval, in order to be yotzei (that is to fulfill your Seder obligations under Jewish law) it is necessary to be an active participant in the Seder. For example, you shouldn’t simply be watching your relatives drink the four cups of wine online; you should be drinking yourself. We can all say L'chaim to that!

President’s Message

Dear Fellow Congregants:

I summarized the 3-phase process for Adas Kodesch’s move into our new home in the February issue of the Shofar. As I write this month’s report to you a week before , Phase 1 is essentially complete. Only issues that are minor and those for which easy short-term work-arounds exist remain. Neither type impedes us from moving with heightened attention to the tasks in Phases 2 and 3.

Phase 1: The Business Office has been operational since mid-January. The Rabbi’s Office awaits a desk. The Kitchen has been cleaned and kashered.

Phase 1 is essentially complete.

Phase 2: The Sanctuary is being equipped with lighting and carpeting. Furniture for the Cantor’s quarters is being obtained. And plans for the use of the 3rd floor and the basement spaces are underway.

A draft list of dates for our use of Miller Hall, the social hall in a wing of Immanuel Church, was submitted to the Church Administration. This list focuses, initially, on Yom Tovim for which we will need the larger space that this hall provides. The list will be updated to include special Shabbatot and other ritual and social events.

This phase will likely be completed in March or early April.

Phase 3: A Health Committee has been formed to develop protocols for operating under the pandemic restrictions. More on this team’s work will be reported in the coming months.

The likely time frame when this Committee’s progress will permit us to assemble for ritual and social events is late April or May. The details for each of these events will strongly influence whether they can be held safely. Some will need to be postponed until safer times.

Note that Delaware’s Phase 1b of the vaccine rollout has started. If you are eligible, please enroll as soon as possible to obtain one of the vaccines. Information on this program can be found at the internet site, https://coronavirus.delaware.gov/vaccine/.

Your obtaining a vaccine would seem to be the best route to ensure your resistance to COVID-19 and to minimize your capability to pass it on to others when Adas Kodesch does resume ritual and social activities in our new home.

Though Pesach may seem far off, it begins in March. I wish each of you a Zissen Pesach!

Shalom,

Alan [email protected]

Sale of Chametz and Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund Appeal

The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund is an important vehicle for tzedakah within AKSE. Numerous requests appealing for funds are received throughout the year, especially before the holidays. Many of the requests are from extremely worthwhile organizations, as well as from individuals who find themselves in need. We turn to you each year at this time, Erev Pesach, to support the Discretionary Fund as part of the Mechirat Chametz process. The Discretionary Fund’s approach to tzedakah is to make a significant gift. In most cases $36 is the minimum contribution given by this fund, and checks have been issued for as high as $500 when the need arises. Please consider giving to this vital instrument of tzedakah within AKSE and the charities it supports when selling your Chametz this year.

Best wishes for a Happy and Kosher Pesach. Rabbi Steven Saks

SOME PASSOVER MYTHS & FACTS Shalom Chaverim,

Pesach is around the corner. Probably no other holiday has as much misinformation and disinformation surrounding it as does Pesach. Below is from The Union for Traditional ’s Passover Myths & Facts page. The entire page can be viewed at http://koshernexus.org/2020/04/passover-myths-and-facts-2/

Chag Kasher V’Sameach, Rabbi Steven Saks

MYTH: It is forbidden to eat matzah/liquid combinations on Pesach. FACT: Matzah/liquid combinations are known in Yiddish as GEBROKTS. A famous example, by the way, would be a kneidel (i.e., a ). Some people have a custom to not eat gebrokts during Pesach due to a fear that by adding water to matzah, some leavening could still take place, thus rendering the matzah chametz. For good reasons, not all accept this minhag (custom). Of those who do, some refrain from eating gebrokts all of Pesach, while others will eat it on the last day of the holiday. The important thing to remember is that gebrokts is not forbidden at all. Many of us eat it all Pesach long!

MYTH: I can sell my animal with the chametz and, thus, be able to feed it chametz during Pesach. FACT: Totally wrong! While our pets do not have to eat certified kosher for Pesach food, we may not feed them chametz – we can’t even own chametz during Pesach, so we certainly can’t use it to feed our animals. On the other hand, even though we may not feed our pets chametz during Pesach, we can feed them trefe! Yes, you read that correctly- we can feed them trefe. We are forbidden to eat trefe, but we can own it. So, you can feed your cat shrimp during Pesach. Here is the issue: Most animal foods contain chametz. We can’t, therefore, use them. In addition, we are forbidden (all the time) to feed our animals mixtures of beef and milk, also! On a year around basis, we need to be certain that the food we give our pets does not abrogate any halacha (Jewish law). are not a problem for animal foods on Pesach. As a result, you can feed your pets kitniyot. HELPFUL TIPS: Feed your guinea pig sunflower seeds, oranges, apple, carrot, alfalfa, lettuce, cabbage and pears. Feed other small pets along similar lines. There are many dogs, by the way, who love chicken soup. And if you eat matzah balls, give some to the dog, too! When all else fails, ask a Gentile friend to take your pet to his/her home for the duration of the holiday and s/he can feed the animal all the chametz it can eat!

CLEANING AND CLEANING SUPPLIES: MYTH: Cleaning supplies used for Pesach must be KP. FACT: Not true. Cleaning supplies are not edible and are not foods. Should you swallow some by accident and live to tell the tale, it still would not be food and thus not subject to Pesach certification. A few years ago, a company proudly announced that they were selling Kosher for Passover window cleaner. We still haven’t figured that one out!!

MYTH: You cannot make a microwave KP. FACT: Not true. Clean the interior of the microwave. Place a clean bowl of water in the unit. Nuke the water until the entire interior of the microwave is covered with moisture. Move the bowl of water to a different spot and nuke for just a bit more. And that, dear reader will make your microwave KP.

WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN?

Shalom....the cooking column is back. I took time off to acclimate to my new home (with my kids), being single again, and cooking in a different kitchen. Requests did not fall on deaf ears. Here I am just in time for Passover! I thought I would ease into things with an old favorite.

(Please note: The column below is reprinted from pre-pandemic times.)

Passover recipes are a dime a dozen! I have so many great ones as well as a large collection of Passover cookbooks. Every year new recipes seem to pop up in magazines and newspapers. You probably have many Passover recipes of your own - recipes your family loves. If you are not cooking for Seder this year, you may be the lucky one who has your family or friends invite you for Seder. Or maybe you've passed the ritual down to your children. Whatever your plans are, the following recipe is one you can "make to take" or make at home during Passover.

This week I had some Lacy Swiss cheese that we were not going to eat. I did not want to throw it out so into the food processor it went and I turned it into a yummy quiche. After I made it I realized it would be a perfect Passover dairy meal.

Crust-less Spinach Quiche

1 Tablespoon oil 1 onion, chopped 1 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 5 eggs 3 cups shredded Muenster cheese*** 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie pan. Heat oil in large skillet over medium high heat. Add onions and stir occasionally until onions are soft. Stir in spinach and continue cooking until excess moisture has evaporated. In a large bowl, combine eggs, grated cheese, salt and pepper. Add spinach mixture, stir to blend. Scoop into prepared pie pan. Bake until egg mixture is set, about 30 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before cutting wedges.

***Or your cheese preference Source: Allrecipes.com.

The great thing about this recipe is that it may be altered according to your personal taste. For example, if you like your food spicy, you could add a few dashes of Tabasco sauce or a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. Or add more of your favorite veggies, like grated carrots or zucchini. I do have a confession: I made this with a crust. I had leftover rice which I spread in the pan before I poured the mixture. It was delicious. The lesson here is, don't be afraid to use those leftovers. (Just don't use the rice for Passover.)

Have a wonderful, sweet Passover and enjoy your Seder! Until next time...... Meryl
