Call to Order Chairman O'Brien called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM. 2. Roll Call and Introduction of New Members Roll was taken, and present were Bernadine Chavez, Kaity Ellis, (by phone), Urja Lansing, Coby Livingstone, Lila Martinez, Tom O'Brien, and Greg Trapp. Paula Seanez joined the meeting later. Not present were Lucy Birbiglia, Christine Hall, and Yolanda Montoya-Cordova. Mr. Trapp said that Paul Luttrell's appointment had expired, but that he was expecting him to be reappointed. 3. Introduction of Guests and Staff Staff present included Jim Salas, Deputy Director; Kelly Burma, Skills Center Coordinator; and Trish Adams, Executive Secretary. 4. Approval of Agenda Ms. Livingstone moved to approve the agenda, and Ms. Lansing seconded the motion. Mr. Trapp asked that the dormitory schedule item be moved up on the agenda to accommodate Ms. Mallahan's schedule. A vote was taken and the agenda approved unanimously. 5. Approval of Minutes of Meeting of September 18, 2018 Ms. Lansing moved to approve the minutes, and Ms. Ellis seconded the motion. A vote was taken and the agenda approved. Ms. Chavez abstained. 6. Chair Report, Tom O'Brien Mr. O'Brien said he appreciated the members making the effort to attend meetings, but that he would still like to have better participation. He said that he understood that work schedules can interfere with attendance. 7. -

Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

BORGES’S MEDIEVAL IBERIA by Maria Ruhlmann A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland March 1, 2017 © Maria Ruhlmann All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation examines how and why famed Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges conjures up images of Medieval Iberia in the vast majority of his anthologies of essays, poems and stories. Following an introduction to Borges’s attitude to the multiple and often contradictory appropriations of Medieval Iberia in the Spanish-speaking world of his day, it considers the philological and postcolonial implications of Borges’s references to al-Andalus and Sepharad. Relying on New Philology as defined by Karla Mallette and on postcolonial approaches to medievalisms of the postcolonial world, Borges’s Medieval Iberia offers a contribution to the mostly unchartered territory of critical approaches to the uses of medievalisms in twentieth- century Argentina. I'm Ines Casillas from UC Santa Barbara and someone who's been researching and writing about Spanish language radio, in the U.S. specifically, for the past five years. So I'm very excited about the possibility of this caucus. So what we're going to do, we're going to start with two of us who do more U.S.-based, kind of, Spanish language radio, work our way to two others who do more border-related, and then end up in Latin America, okay? So my research highlights how U.S. Spanish language radio across the 20th century has really capitalized, very lucratively, on the conversation around immigration. -

Variation and change in Latin American Spanish and Portuguese Gregory R. Guy New York University Fieldworker:¿Que Ud. considera ‘buen español? New York Puerto Rican Informant: Tiene que pronunciar la ‘s’. Western hemisphere varieties of Spanish and Portuguese show substantial similarity in the patterning of sociolinguistic variation and change. Caribbean and coastal dialects of Latin American Spanish share several variables with Brazilian Portuguese (e.g., deletion of coda –s, –r). These variables also show similar social distribution in Hispanic and Lusophone communities: formal styles and high status speakers are consonantally conservative, while higher deletion is associated with working class speakers and informal styles. The regions that show these sociolinguistic parallels also share common historical demographic characteristics, notably a significant population of African ancestry and the associated history of extensive contact with African languages into the 19th C. But contemporary changes in progress are also active, further differentiating Latin American language varieties. Introduction The Spanish and Portuguese languages have long been the objects of separate tradi- tions of scholarship that treat each of them in isolation. But this traditional separation is more indicative of political distinctions – Spain and Portugal have been separate nation-states for almost a millennium – than of any marked linguistic differences. In fact, these two Iberian siblings exhibit extensive linguistic resemblance, as well as no- tably parallel and intertwined social histories in the Americas. As this volume attests, these languages may very fruitfully be examined together, and such a joint and com- parative approach permits broader generalizations and deeper insights than may be obtained by considering each of them separately. -
