Readings –Biblical & Romantic READINGS –BIBLICAL & ROMANTIC The most beautiful wedding ceremonies are the ones infused by the couple’s traditions, values and personality. These are some samples that I have gathered through my years officiating weddings and searches. I'm sure there is plenty that I've missed, and any suggestions you may have are welcome to keep this site alive! They are not in any specific order so keeping reading until you find the one that touches your heart. If you identify errors, please let me know. I tried to give credit to the authors that I was able to identify but I know not all are validated. Enjoy! Cecilia Biblical Readings The couple or the reader may bring their own bible (or version). This is just a guide. Old Testament Genesis 1:26-28 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 2. Genesis 2:18-24 18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam[a] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[b] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib[c] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. 2. Reading from the book of Tobit 8:5-10 When Sarah’s parents left the bedroom and closed the door behind them, Tobiah rose from bed and said to his wife, “My sister, come, let us pray and beg our Lord to grant us mercy and protection.” 5She got up, and they started to pray and beg that they might be protected. He began with these words: “Blessed are you, O God of our ancestors; blessed be your name forever and ever! Let the heavens and all your creation bless you forever.a 6You made Adam, and you made his wife Eve to be his helper and support; and from these two the human race has come. You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a helper like himself.’b 7Now, not with lust, but with fidelity I take this kinswoman as my wife. Send down your mercy on me and on her, and grant that we may grow old together. Bless us with children.” 8They said together, “Amen, amen!” 9Then they went to bed for the night. But Raguel got up and summoned his servants. They went out with him and dug a grave, 10for he said, “Perhaps Tobiah will die; then we would be a laughingstock and an object of mockery. This is the word of the Lord. 2. Proverbs 31:10-13,19-20, 30-31 [a]A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. 3. Song of Songs 2:8-10-14 8 Listen! My beloved! Look! Here he comes, leaping across the mountains, bounding over the hills. 9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look! There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattice. 10 My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. He 14My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places on the mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely. She 16 My beloved is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies. 6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy[a] unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.[b] 7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it[c] would be utterly scorned. 4. A reading from the Book of Sirach 26:1-4, 13-16 Blessed the husband of a good wife, twice-lengthened are his days; A worthy wife brings joy to her husband, peaceful and full is his life. A good wife is a generous gift bestowed upon him who fears the Lord; Be he rich or poor, his heart is content, and a smile is ever on his face. A gracious wife delights her husband, her thoughtfulness puts flesh on his bones; A gift from the Lord is her governed speech, and her firm virtue is of surpassing worth. Choicest of blessings is a modest wife, priceless her chaste soul. A holy and decent woman adds grace upon grace; indeed, no price is worthy of her temperate soul. Like the sun rising in the Lord’s heavens, the beauty of a virtuous wife is the radiance of her home. 6. Jeremiah 31:32-34 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to[a] them,[b]” declares the LORD. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Hebrew Bible Verses about Love 7.Ruth 1:16-17 16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” 8. Palm 92, 12-15 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, “The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” 9.Song of Songs 8:6-7 6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy[a] unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.[b] 7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it[c] would be utterly scorned. 10. Palm 24 8-10 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty— he is the King of glory. 11. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

MOTHER'S FORGOTTEN GARDEN by Cory Daniel Zimmerman A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida December 2008 Copyright by Cory Daniel Zimmerman 2008 ii Abstract Author: Cory Daniel Zimmerman Title: Mother’s Forgotten Garden Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Jason Schwartz Degree: Master of Fine Arts Year: 2008 The thesis proposed for my M.F.A. in creative writing is a collection of conceptual American short stories written in a variety of forms that properly suit their respective subjects. Like a handful of miscellaneous wild seeds scattered over a tilled garden, the goal of the project is to represent the wild asymmetry of Nature via a collection of unlikely companions. For this reason, the conceptual form of each story often takes root in scientific or symbolic representations of Nature (i.e. sine and cosine curves, the yin-yang, etc.). The plot of loose soil holding these collective experiments together is their earthy thematic focus—namely, the way in which Nature has been systematically backgrounded by western ideology. On occasion, a story’s conceptual focus may stray from these ecofeminist principles, but only for the purpose of leveling a more critical or satirical eye upon common American ideologies. iv Table of Contents The cosmis joke redux ......................................................................................................

The University of Texas at Austin May 2007 Preface Dear Reader(s), Hi, how are you? It has been suggested to me that a few pages of prefatory remarks of the form “dear reader” would help “prepare the reader to be disoriented” in the essays I’ve written. I’m very happy to do so, insofar as corresponding with you in this way somewhat lessens the natural readerly tendency to demand—intentionally or not—that I correspond “to” you. This distinction might be the most important cord running through the essays, which all in some way discuss coping strategies for how to deal with irrevocable, incommunicable difference. The maps by which we tend to conceptualize “diverse” people in familiar or categorical terms are inadequate. Disorienting? Yes, insofar as the reader holds to a protocol that does want some of its categories to remain unquestionable. Common sense tells us that one has to stand on solid ground to swing a hammer effectively; whereas my project has turned out to have more in common with Derrida’s, in that one can’t write about what underwrites meaning without either violating one’s own thesis or else finding some other technique for swinging the hammer—or wielding the scalpel, or unwinding the threads of a fabrication, or any metaphor you choose, so long as it means fundamental anti-foundationalist critique.

Forward Being creative is difficult, often terrifying, lonely work. The best writers and artists must dig deep within themselves in order to cre- ate the art that they later share with others. And then, in the sharing, the artist must stand unmasked, alone, and vulnerable while an audience of strangers critiques their work. In many ways, there may be no occupation that requires more bravery than that of the artist. The work you are about to read and view represents the brave and creative efforts of Wayne County Public Schools’ students from every grade level. It is broad in scope and covers a range of topics. Imagination runs wild here, in brilliant thoughts and ideas, colors and images. I hope you will enjoy your journey through the 2018-2019 Wayne Collection. The introduction chronicles the need for such a program; offers background information on the San Francisco Public Library's involvement with hospitals; describes steps taken to set up Book Buddies; and outlines six project objectives. Various facets of the program are then discussed: (1) the implementation of the project; (2) recruitment and training of volunteers to read and tell stories to hospitalized children; (3) the introduction of Dial-a-Story lines in Spanish and Cantonese; (4) the publication of a newsletter as a vehicle of communication among those involved in the project; (5) the evaluation of the program; and (6) the continuation of funding beyond the grant period. Recommendations for setting up similar programs, particularly for other libraries and communities that wish to commit themselves to serving the needs of hospitalized children and their families, conclude the report. The appendixes, which make up the major part of this document, contain sample materials used by the project, including copies of the newsletter, bibliographies, correspondence, forms for evaluating volunteer training, and the "Book Buddies Volunteer Handbook."
