Cornelius Review Staff: Kayla Chagnon, Suzanne Cole, and Nicole Twigg My Mother’s Hands Debbie Arthur I think of my mother and I think of her hands; Why? When looking back over my life, all of the things that I seem to remember about her, she was using her hands I remember when those hands patched walls with plaster. They took off rooms and rooms of wallpaper; painted every wall in our home with every color of the rainbow. They carried coal to the furnace to keep us warm in the winter; and dug out the cellar to store that coal. Those hands took care of her children, digging stones out of our knees, putting bandage upon bandage on so many cuts and bruises to make them better. They smacked us when we disobeyed and marched us to church 3 times a week. They took care of us when we were sick, patting our hot little heads; feeding us when we were too sick to eat, and with all those kids that was a lot of feeding. They tucked warm blankets around each of her children to keep out the cold at night. They folded in prayer each and every day to talk to God. You would think they would be worn out with all that work they have done over the years for so many of us. But they are not. When I walk into that house today, stressed or upset, those hands on my face and wrapped around me give me peace, it flows through those hands into me and they don’t let go till I am calm. -

A man is driving the car. Who is he? There’s a woman in the car. There’s a boy in the car. Who are they? Now they are walking to the red house. The woman has keys. The house has no chairs, it has no tables, and it has no beds. A big yellow truck is driving to the house. There are three men in the truck. They are wearing yellow shirts and hats. Left camp in Bugaboo Creek 03.20 and crossed the pass between Snow Patch and Bugaboo Spire, 08.20 (see 'A.A.J.' 1931, vol. i, No. 3, pp. 292-97). Bore N.W. across to the basin of the Warren Glacier (breakfast 09.00 to 09.45 by the big medial moraine near a remarkable glacier lake draining by a canal formed of crevasses for over a mile to theN.). Proceeded N.W. and descended into the head of a glacier basin draining S. into Howell Creek. Up again on to the northern neve slopes of a chain of minor peaks, from which a second considerable descent to theW. had to be made in order to mount to the foot of the N. ridge of 'Mount Conrad,' by which, over easy snow slopes, the summit was gained at 16.00. A sharp rocky peak entirely surrounded by large glacier systems. The name Mt. Jeannie, from Robert Burns's wife, was suggested in a note left on the summit; but, since this was Conrad Kain's final expedition, the name Mt. Conrad is being proposed to the Geographic Board of Canada. The route was retraced to the breakfast place and a descent to a timber-line bivouac made down Warren Glacier. It is pleasant to recall with what fine energy and high spirits Conrad Kain enjoyed this the last of his innumerable first ascent8 . -

Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida December 2008 Copyright by Cory Daniel Zimmerman 2008 ii Abstract Author: Cory Daniel Zimmerman Title: Mother’s Forgotten Garden Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Jason Schwartz Degree: Master of Fine Arts Year: 2008 The thesis proposed for my M.F.A. in creative writing is a collection of conceptual American short stories written in a variety of forms that properly suit their respective subjects. Like a handful of miscellaneous wild seeds scattered over a tilled garden, the goal of the project is to represent the wild asymmetry of Nature via a collection of unlikely companions. For this reason, the conceptual form of each story often takes root in scientific or symbolic representations of Nature (i.e. sine and cosine curves, the yin-yang, etc.). The plot of loose soil holding these collective experiments together is their earthy thematic focus—namely, the way in which Nature has been systematically backgrounded by western ideology. On occasion, a story’s conceptual focus may stray from these ecofeminist principles, but only for the purpose of leveling a more critical or satirical eye upon common American ideologies. iv Table of Contents The cosmis joke redux ...................................................................................................... -

The University of Texas at Austin May 2007 Preface Dear Reader(s), Hi, how are you? It has been suggested to me that a few pages of prefatory remarks of the form “dear reader” would help “prepare the reader to be disoriented” in the essays I’ve written. I’m very happy to do so, insofar as corresponding with you in this way somewhat lessens the natural readerly tendency to demand—intentionally or not—that I correspond “to” you. This distinction might be the most important cord running through the essays, which all in some way discuss coping strategies for how to deal with irrevocable, incommunicable difference. The maps by which we tend to conceptualize “diverse” people in familiar or categorical terms are inadequate. Disorienting? Yes, insofar as the reader holds to a protocol that does want some of its categories to remain unquestionable. Common sense tells us that one has to stand on solid ground to swing a hammer effectively; whereas my project has turned out to have more in common with Derrida’s, in that one can’t write about what underwrites meaning without either violating one’s own thesis or else finding some other technique for swinging the hammer—or wielding the scalpel, or unwinding the threads of a fabrication, or any metaphor you choose, so long as it means fundamental anti-foundationalist critique.
