Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

The Inspiration behind Compositions for Clarinetist Frederick Thurston. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 86 pp., references, 51 titles. Frederick Thurston was a prominent British clarinet performer and teacher in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the brevity of his life and the impact of two world wars, Thurston’s legacy is often overlooked among clarinetists in the United States. Thurston’s playing inspired 19 composers to write 22 solo and chamber works for him, none of which he personally commissioned. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive biography of Thurston’s career as clarinet performer and teacher with a complete bibliography of compositions written for him. With biographical knowledge and access to the few extant recordings of Thurston’s playing, clarinetists may gain a fuller understanding of Thurston’s ideal clarinet sound and musical ideas. These resources are necessary in order to recognize the qualities about his playing that inspired composers to write for him and to perform these works with the composers’ inspiration in mind. Despite the vast list of works written for and dedicated to Thurston, clarinet players in the United States are not familiar with many of these works, and available resources do not include a complete listing.

En 1988, naît la Bande à Lumière: des réalisateurs et des producteurs se regroupent pour faire reconnaître le documentaire au sein du mécanisme de soutien à la production mis en place par le CNC. C’est un enjeu financier pour la fabrica- tion des films, surtout après l’ouverture de la télévision aux producteurs indépendants, mais c’est aussi un enjeu de fond: le documentaire, c’est du cinéma! Dans son élan, la Bande fonde trois manifestations pour répondre à ces deux enjeux. Le Sunny Side of the Doc, versant économie de la produc- tion, La Biennale de Lyon qui se déplacera à Marseille et deviendra le FID, et les États généraux du documentaire, versant rencontres et réflexion sur les formes de création dans le documentaire, dans ce charmant village d’Ardèche par lequel on dénomme le plus souvent ce rendez-vous de la fin août: Lussas. Pour autant, le « paysage audiovisuel » n’a rien de bucolique et il pourrait un jour ressembler à une friche industrielle, du moins sur un versant de la colline, l’autre continuant d’exhiber une opulence indécente et dominante. En revanche du côté du service public, c’est « vaches maigres », là où déjà les sentiers de l’industriel à l’artisan se faisaient rares. Les tensions et les ruptures s’accroissent. Alors l’existence des bandes, plus ou moins structu- rées, reprend de son importance et on peut voir comment le Club des 13, le ROD et FédéRézo, par exemple, tentent de faire bouger les lignes.

Left camp in Bugaboo Creek 03.20 and crossed the pass between Snow Patch and Bugaboo Spire, 08.20 (see 'A.A.J.' 1931, vol. i, No. 3, pp. 292-97). Bore N.W. across to the basin of the Warren Glacier (breakfast 09.00 to 09.45 by the big medial moraine near a remarkable glacier lake draining by a canal formed of crevasses for over a mile to theN.). Proceeded N.W. and descended into the head of a glacier basin draining S. into Howell Creek. Up again on to the northern neve slopes of a chain of minor peaks, from which a second considerable descent to theW. had to be made in order to mount to the foot of the N. ridge of 'Mount Conrad,' by which, over easy snow slopes, the summit was gained at 16.00. A sharp rocky peak entirely surrounded by large glacier systems. The name Mt. Jeannie, from Robert Burns's wife, was suggested in a note left on the summit; but, since this was Conrad Kain's final expedition, the name Mt. Conrad is being proposed to the Geographic Board of Canada. The route was retraced to the breakfast place and a descent to a timber-line bivouac made down Warren Glacier. It is pleasant to recall with what fine energy and high spirits Conrad Kain enjoyed this the last of his innumerable first ascent8 .

Liminal soundscapes in Powell & Pressburger’s wartime films Anita Jorge Université de Lorraine This article explores Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger’s wartime films through the prism of the soundscape, focusing on the liminal function of sound. Dwelling on such films as 49th Parallel (1941) and One of Our Aircraft is Missing (1942), it argues that sound acts as a diegetic tool translating the action into a spatiotemporal elsewhere, as well as a liberation tool, enabling the people threatened by Nazi assimilation to reach for a more permissive world where restrictions no longer operate. Lastly, the soundscape serves as a ‘translanguage’, bridging the gap between soldiers and civilians, or between different nations fighting against a common enemy, thus giving birth to a transnational community.
