OUNDED IN 2000 by Carlos Falcó of Marqués de Griñón and Victor de la Serna of Finca Sandoval, FGrandes Pagos de España is not affiliated with the Spanish DO system. It was founded from the winemakers’ passion for expressing the unique terroirs of Spain through grapes grown from ‘Pagos’—meaning single vineyards with characteristics that set them apart from others in the same area. Membership is very exclusive, with only 29 wineries included from the entire country.

While a producer only needs one of their wines to follow the group’s guidelines to be inducted, the induction process is very stringent. The wine must come from an exceptional single vineyard, and the winery should have at least five years of recognized prestige in the marketplace as well as high scores from national and international competitions. To even be considered, a producer must be nominated by current members then approved by the group majority. It is then that a complete inspection and study of the vineyard, winery, and winemaking philosophies is conducted, followed by a tasting of the wines for quality assessment. These evaluations must result in full approval from the group of current members for a wine and producer to finally be fully accepted.
