  • Wine from Women Winemakers
Wine from Women Winemakers • Historically, winemaking was a man’s job, often tied to religious bodies/orders • Is there any fundamental “signature” difference in female-made wine? • What unique challenges or opportunities do women winemakers face? 1) Marie Courtin Résonance Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut NV – Aube, France • The Aube is closer to Chablis than to the heart of Champagne in Reims; it has the same Kimmeridgian limestone as Chablis • Dominique Moreau took over a little plot of mostly Pinot Noir vines in the Aube district in 2001; started her Marie Courtin label (named for her grandmother) in 2005 • Dominique’s winemaking is a little different than what’s traditionally been “typical” in Champagne: she makes single vineyard, single varietal, single vintage wine from biodynamically farmed vineyards; uses no commercial yeasts and no dosage • Résonance is from all hand-harvested Pinot Noir fermented in stainless steel; it’s named for the balancing effects of earth and sky that affect wine’s terroir 1) Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling ’12 – Eden Valley, Australia • Eden Valley is a region in South Australia, famous for its Riesling, which is dry and generally very minerally • Pewsey Vale vineyards were first planted in 1847 by an Englishman; 115 years later this area became the center of Australia’s Riesling renaissance • Winemaker is Louisa Rose, who also works for Aussie wineries Yalumba and Hill- Smith; she grew up working on her family’s vineyard in the Yarra Valley and studied theoretical physics before taking on winemaking • Her winemaking

  • 2016 Napa Valley, Rutherford Estate Vineyard Merlot
2016 Napa Valley, Rutherford Estate Vineyard Merlot St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery is a 100% Estate Grown, sustainably farmed winery located in the renowned Rutherford growing region in the heart of Napa Valley. The vineyard sits on the “Rutherford Bench” of mineral-rich alluvial and well-drained soils allowing the grapevine’s root systems to mine for nutrients and water, yielding complex and concentrated flavors. Committed to producing the highest quality estate wines without compromise, we focus on sustainable winery and farming operations to protect the land and environment for future generations. WINEMAKER’S NOTES Deep shades of reds and purples commence this wine. Luscious ripe black cherry with some notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, coffee, and toasted oak combine with a hint graphite. Flavors of rich black plum and chocolate, coupled with subtle raspberry and toasted vanillin barrel. A smooth, silky palate with elegant tannins presents this wine. VINTAGE 2016 2016 saw a near-perfect growing season. A warm spring jumpstarted bud break and an ideal June and July followed. August was cooler allowing the fruit to ripen uniformly under slow, constant conditions. Merlot harvest kicked off on September 16th, 2016. The fruit was hand-harvested in the cool morning hours and brought to the winery in half-ton bins. Clusters were sorted using a double sorting system: first, the clusters were sorted by hand then the individual berries were sorted to ensure that only the ideal grapes were chosen. These grapes were delivered to a fermenter for a period of resting on skins. Warm fermentation temperatures were encouraged along with gentle cap maceration to achieve the desired color and structure before an extended maceration time on skins prior to final pressing.

Conservative soil management techniques play an important role, compared to conventional tillage, in order to preserve biodiversity, to save soil fertility, and to keep vegetative-productive balance. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate long-term adaptation strategies to create a balance between the vine and the surrounding environment. This work sought to assess the effects of following different management practices on Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon during 2017 and 2018 seasons: soil tillage (T), temporary cover cropping over all inter-rows (C), and mulching with plant residues every other row (M). The main physiological parameters of vines (leaf gas exchange, stem water potential, chlorophyll fluorescence, and indirect chlorophyll content) as well as qualitative and quantitative grape parameters (technological and phenolic analyses) were measured.

His mother’s family lives in Catalonia, Spain along the Mediterranean coast near the Delta del Ebro. Markus spent many a childhood summer watching his water glass go from a light shade of pink to eventually a dark red as the ratio of wine to water matched his age. After meeting Liz at UC Davis, Markus began working at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as a viticulturist in 1989. He became intimately acquainted with long forgotten viticultural areas of California in search of old vine Rhone varieties such as Grenache, Carignane and Mourvedre for the newly released “Le Mistral” Program. This is how he first discovered the charms of the Lodi Appellation.
