Spring 2021 | Twelfth Night 4 The Story

Somewhere in a land called , Duke Orsino pines for the love of a countess. But Countess Olivia has declared seven years of mourning for her dead brother and will see no one. Matters of love in Illyria are, for the foreseeable future, at a stalemate.

A young woman named Viola washes up on Illyria’s shore, shipwrecked at sea and fearing that her twin brother Sebastian has died in the storm. Alone in a strange land, she takes on a young page’s disguise and, as "Cesario," seeks employment in the house of Duke Orsino. Orsino takes Cesario into his confidence, and sends his page to Olivia as his ambassador in love. Having already fallen for the Duke, Viola undertakes his embassy. As the Countess drops her veil of mourning, she now falls head over heels in love with the stranger before her.

Olivia’s uncle Sir Toby Belch and his sidekick Sir Andrew Aguecheek—who also hopes to win Olivia’s heart—party late into the nights. Olivia attempts to maintain order in her household through her steward Malvolio, hated by all as a self-righteous “puritan.” Her gentlewoman Maria plots their collective revenge upon Malvolio—a forged letter of love from the Countess to her steward. The conspirators watch in delight as Malvolio discovers the letter and offers himself to his mistress, precisely as instructed in the letter. Baffled by his most peculiar behavior, Olivia bids her uncle Sir Toby to care for Malvolio. Toby readily accommodates, imprisoning the steward in darkness to cure his “madness.”

As it turns out, Viola’s lost twin Sebastian is alive and well—and washed ashore in Illyria of all places, looking a lot like Cesario. Olivia is overjoyed by ”Cesario’s” consent at long last to her proposals of marriage—and Viola is no less stunned as she learns of Cesario’s impending nuptials. In the end, the appearance of the real Sebastian and the real Viola sets all aright in Illyria. Almost. n
